HIPPIE INFILTRATION THREAD!!! :x
-
There is a line between nature lover and this abnormal behavior. What drives these people to this level? The yelling tells me they want attention, they live for people going "what the hell". How do these people function in the world. How do they reconcile this extreme level of nature loving with all the positive benefits of an industrial world they almost no doubt reap? The video called them "extremist," I couldn't agree more; they would make an interesting psychological study.

This is them.

I think the study needs to be aimed below the trees, more likely into the weeds.. :rofl

That was horrifying, these people are sick to their heads. As far as I can see, they have attachment issues with other living beings, and do not realize the realities of what they worship. It's survival of the fittest out there, and everybody's doing it.

EDIT: I'm a greenie, but they've gone too far

I tip toed through the site and didn't get much more than a wooden response. Very few people log'd in, not too Poplar. I even threw an Olive branch and they decided to leaf me alone.

Is it wrong of me to wish the cast of American Loggers / Axe Men showed up there?
Scary thing about what you said Moray, is that your exactly right.

This might have some entertainment in it yet. :rofl Plus, I'm interested if the mods are really as clueless as they seem.
As for the actual topic, the non-trolls in it are giving me a good laugh. For supposedly a bunch of tree lovers, they sure don't know a lot about trees.
Is it a limb or the trunk that's causing the trouble?
Not an arborist, but oaks seem survive considerable limb loss pretty well.
It'll either survive or have a very very slow death (likely climaxing with whatever remains of the tree giving way and falling ontop of your house during some storm). Winning answer would be to cut the whole thing down unless you have some money to burn on a crane rental ( http://www.treemover.com/images/media/lg_photo21.JPG ).

Ok, I didn't want you to cut on your beautiful tree before we had a test to see if it survived.
So I went outside in my woods and cut up one oak tree, approximately in the same places and you described. Then I thought, maybe there's a better way to do it, so I made my own personal cuts on another oak tree, its not pretty but I think it will survive. My last tree too test was when I cut basically all limbs off, its basically a big stick sticking out of the ground now.
I will report every 2 weeks to give you an idea on how its going!

Where I live in Michigan we had several semi's come through with those wind farm blades. I reckon they had to ship them by truck because they were too massive to fit in a C-47 or other such transport.
From what I understand, they were to be placed near the Straits of Mackinac. Maybe we could wire them to run in reverse and blow that Canadian stench back up north. (I kid, I kid.)
also worth quoting :rofl

I wonder. Were you ever a child yourself? Did you never make a mistake?
Yes, sometimes children are destructive, particularly boys. But you are making generalizations here about the behavior of children that are not necessarily true. I myself have one child, a boy even, who in the second grade got terribly upset with a classmate who smashed a moth on the playground.
Children reflect both individual personality traits as well as the influence of their environment and the people around them... you can only blame children to a point for their ignorance. Someone needs to teach them better, and if no one does.... well that's how you end up with a lot of the ignorant, stubborn, destructive people we have in the world today.
Remember, "it takes a village to raise a child". Parents are not the only ones who bear some responsibility for the way children in our society turn out. We have to support an educational system that teaches critical thinking and reasoning skills and endeavors to help children of all types and abilities reach their maximum potential. We need to take advantage of opportunities to teach children to be their best self, even when they aren't your kids.
I think it sets a dangerous precedent to say, "you deserve to have a child and YOU do not". Who sets the criteria? Rich people get kids because they can afford to cheat the system? Loving and deserving people don't get any children because they don't make $150,000 or more a year? It seems that the only way limitations on having children could ever "work" or be even remotely fair is to limit the number of children everyone can have. Which of course will be very, very unpopular... particularly with Catholics and other "quiverful" variety Christians. (If I hear one more person say to me, "...If I get pregnant again blah blah blah" as if it is unavoidable and all open to chance I may just scream )
As for wooddonuts "mindlessly" pecking on trees... Wooddonuts are actually quite mindful of which trees they tap. If a wooddonut is pecking a tree, it most often indicates a limb that is dying and/or the tree is infested with insects. Wooddonuts don't drill on trees because it's fun, they do it to find food or to create shelters for their young. So, if a wooddonut was drilling on my tree, I wouldn't shoot it... instead I'd be interested in it's motives and what this means for my tree.
In fact I had one drilling on one of my trees a few years ago. It turned out the branch he was drilling on was split enough from the trunk that it was dying.
It seems to be human adults who do the most mindless "pecking" of anyone involved in this whole discussion!
-
looks like donut is on the language filter
edit: I should have figured that wouldn't work.

It's not so much the little hints as it is I'm pretty sure that the admins can see where people are being directed to them from. A bunch of hits from google = NBD, a bunch of hits from here = suspicious. Isn't that how the PETA thread got shut down?

Sadly I've had the same problem with a tree too close to my house when I lived in Boston. It harbored Mosquitos and other bugs horribly. I couldn't live with it but I didn't want such a beautiful tree to dissapear. My cousin, suggested to keep the spirit of the tree alive, (What a Spitfire she is but that's another story) I should take a sapling and plant it in a Jug till it was big enough to plant somewhere else. So I did but I also planted some at a park on Mitchell street near my house. Still to this day when I visit, I go to that park with the family dog Tiger and sit. The air there is so much cleaner then the corse air in the city I live now. The point being there's always something we can do!
Elkfarmer: :rofl
but what if the vh is down? how will you get the wirbles then?
Dichtomy: :rofl :rofl
True I've never cut down a tree. As much as it pains me I think I'm going to have to do it this time. I've heard about the wirble but I've not had much luck searching for it. A friend of my suggested that I purchase or rent a chipper with at least 262 hp. Is this a professional tool for large trees?
Oh never mind I just can't do it.
Tomorrow I'm going to start calling local tree services to see if they will be willing to cut the trunk in the spots I mark off so I can make the furniture out of them and leave the mulch for my Gardenia and Jasmine beds.
I'm just very sad about this. I bought this lot because it had 28 trees on it. I've had eight die and now the biggest and most majestic on the lot has to be put down.
Elkfarmer!!: :rofl :rofl
well if it has that much hp, it must be very dangerous to the user. i know a guy who goes by the name grizz (mighty odd fellow, i might add), and he is a master of machines like this. he helps me out when i have some dead shrubbery that i have to sadly get rid of in my 'tater farm.
hes told me that a new, upgraded version is on the way. it'll be here in about 2 weeks

Dicho that was perfect!
I'd just like to say I really appreciate the support and love I've felt since joining this site during this time. Greentea, I just don't think anything could grow there now. The house is over 30 years old and the shade precludes any experimentation I might do. I'm afraid were I to try to put something there I'd be condemning it to death. I am thinking about building a squirrel hutch out of MkIID pressboard out of Lancaster England. I've read that that's the best and most long lasting material for these types of projects and has I life expectancy that's uncapped. I do so enjoy my furry little friends and watching them frolic around the yard never really in a hurry. But it is difficult to stop my dogs from chasing them when I let them out. I have to admit I do laugh when I see a runner squirrel it's just funny to me knowing that the squirrel is going to jump a tree and have enough altitude to sit up there and chirp at my dog while he whines and circles the tree. Is that cruel?
I was talking to a friend of mine Kate yesterday whose husband Tony has some experience in building natural furniture from downed trees and she said she'd have him get in touch with me after Thanksgiving about what tools I need to buy to do a proper job but she knew he was really excited about his new Nikki set of chisels.
Wood that was as beautiful as a sunset on Okinawa.. thank you.
Well anyway happy Thanksgiving to all. From every loss comes a gain I suppose. If reincarnation is real my tree will reup away from the cities and grow again to majestic heights.

HoPony wrote:
Oh man when I read this all I could think was You crazy Americans,
Yellville has a problem. It wants people to come to its annual Turkey Trot festival -- and yet the most spectacular event in the festival is something that the town can't talk about.
That something is the "Turkey Drop," where live wild turkeys are dropped out of a low-flying airplane that circles the two-day festival.
Turkey Trot has been celebrated on the second Friday and Saturday of October every year since 1946. It was conceived as a way to call attention to the region's abundant wild turkeys. A highlight of the festival was the "Turkey Toss," in which live wild turkeys were tossed off of the roof of the County Courthouse. In the 1960s this was replaced by the Turkey Drop.
The thinking behind the toss/drop was that most of the turkeys would escape into the wild and thereby increase the local population. The problem is that wild turkeys can't fly very well. Some of the birds would splat on the pavement. Some that landed safely ended up being chased around town.
The splattering and the chasing drew unwelcome national media attention in the 1970s and 1980s, and animal rights groups threatened legal action. Since 1990, Yellville has officially divorced itself of the Turkey Drop -- it isn't mentioned in any Turkey Trot literature -- and yet it still happens every year. The town's position is that mysterious planes just show up over the festival every October and drop turkeys (although the drop point has been moved to the south edge of town so that the pilots don't violate FAA altitude regulations). Four or five drops take place each day, with one to three turkeys per trip.
Another memorable event at the Turkey Trot is the Miss Drumsticks beauty contest, in which the winners are chosen while their faces and upper bodies are hidden.
