Title: A Call to Arms - Camel drivers sign up here
Post by: SCTusk on November 23, 2010, 05:23:14 AM
WW1 arena this coming Saturday 27 Nov at 2130hrs US EST, a small group of Camel drivers have agreed to meet and sweep the dreaded Fokker from the sky. However there may be two of 'em so any additional help would be appreciated. Probably a good idea to specify a country, so we'll make it Knights and up from A3, maybe any Fokker jockeys who master their fear can up Bish from A2  :D

There will be a temporary relaxation of the 'Gentlemen's Code' during the sweep. The mission objective is to crush the pesky Dr1 with sheer weight of numbers. Losses are expected to be high. Nevertheless we will win through in the end, as this will be a classic WW1 style battle of attrition.

Hope to see you there. Good luck  :salute

I don't think that Camel Drivers is an appropriate title.  I think they are properly referred to as "Arab Americans".   Please, let's not let these boards go to shameful names.    :D

I'll be there.

I would love to kick the crap out of u kamel jockeys all night long,

....so there'll be THREE Fokkers?....  :O

Should be fun BGB, hope your rebuild goes well  :salute  Just a word of warning - there will be ad hoc jeering, taunting and some generally disparaging remarks prior to and during the battle. Guidelines for those unfamiliar with such behaviour are included below. Remember these are guidelines only, innovative and/or imaginative variations on the theme are encouraged. Please confine your insults to the characteristics of the opposing aircraft, the ability of the pilot/s, and the tactics employed. Stay focussed, gentlemen.

Camel Jockey's Guide to Casting Aspersions on Dr1 Drivers:

The purpose of taunting an opponent is to enrage him, impairing his ability to think clearly. Dr1 drivers become angry when you point out that their aircraft is a 'toy aeroplane', a 'noob ride' etc. Also they are never in complete control of the Dr1 and suffer from deep seated self confidence issues as a result. A taunt along the lines of 'you suck' will always find it's mark.... I usually abbreviate this to <S>  As for tactics, Dr1 drivers prefer to attack with an altitude advantage, and this provides you with two options: if they are higher simply call them 'alt monkeys', and if you are higher keep your thoughts to yourself, manage your E carefully and gun them down like sick rabbits.

Okay Camel Jockeys it sound like a lot of hot wind blustering and pounding of chests to workup the courage to face the masters of the skies the three wing devils. :devil  I throw down the gauntlet and hope the glove does not leave to red of a mark cross the faces of you camel jockeys.  As for insults a gentlemen simply ignores them and goes about his business of tearing off your upper wing so you won't have to squint to see us throw that laughable small hole in your upper wing.  Plenty of crying and weeping will be heard on the 27th from wife's and girlfriends of the fallen Camel Jockeys.  I will see all of you on the field of battle. :neener:

Can we get a list of who is joining the British Side (Camel) and who is joining the German side (Fokker Dr1) ???

Can we get AH to provide a special arena event to participate in this challenge ?

Better to pound your chest than drink yourself into a stupor for working up courage... has anyone ever seen a sober pilot in a Dr1? The way you guys fall around the sky it's no wonder you hardly ever attempt to RTB. If the triplane wasn't such a helium filled noob ride most of you would never get off the ground. And we don't need a bigger hole to see you guys, we can hear where you're at from your girlie screams. At the very least you'll have a fine lesson on how to die like a man, from real men in a real man's flying machine   :D

Typical girlie Tripe driver talk, he wants a list of names (so he can plan ahead on who to run away from) and a special arena (so he doesn't mess up his rank)  :rofl

I guess there's not enough room in that tiny cockpit for you to grow a pair so I'll just recommend you drink a big jug of that foul Hun beer and try to man up  :neener:

...... as always it'll be a pleasure to see you in there Ehre, that goes for QBall and everyone else too (but extra hurrahs for the Camel/F2B jockeys)   :salute

That looks like a good read Sid  :aok Hope the timeslot doesn't cause you too much grief. Great to see so many good sticks putting their hands up for this, yeah it should be a blast.

Camel jockeys are an independent breed with a good appreciation of a tactical situation, and best left to their own devices once the enemy is in sight. Therefore I'll refrain from trying to sell any specific battle plan and just suggest a couple of things you might like to keep in mind.... re-ups can lead to a stream of vulnerable aircraft flying alone into a horde, so best to circle the field and pick up a wingman or two unless we already have air superiority. The pesky Dr1's like having an alt advantage and we can expect them to be above us on the first encounter. You can hang a Camel on it's prop to shoot so long as you're gentle with it in the stall, and firm in the recovery  ;) I imagine our friends in the F2B's will be a big help during this phase. After we crush the first wave of Fokkers we should be able to sweep forward and maintain our own altitude advantage close to the enemy airfield. This will inevitably lead to longer transit times to and from the combat area, so I'd recommend 50% fuel load.

If you need to ditch try to take a clear line through all the Dr1 wreckage and debris, nothing worse than getting it on the ground safely only to bump into a pile of broken wings and a corpse. Anyone who gets captured should bide their time until an opportunity arises to escape and steal away in an enemy aircraft. In this case don't worry about getting shot down by friendly fire on your return, we'll know you're one of us by the way you fly (straight and true, with a hard glint in your eye.... not sideways and backwards with tears in your eyes)  :D

Hi Plawranc  kickoff at 1300hrs (1pm) Sunday for us cobber (a little theater for our US friends lol) so swing yer billy at 1245 and settle down with a cuppa and a sanga, we can hoe into the tucker and lunch on Fokkers at the same time  :D

Have you flown the F1 before? If not you might need a few minutes practice. Watch your airspeed, the wings have a bad habit of separating over about 140mph specially if you move the stick. Oh yeah, don't try to out turn the Dr1 in a flat turn, he'll just advance to your 6 o'clock in quick time, and the turn makes it difficult for your wingman to shoot him.... fly to an approximate heading at right angles to your wingman and throw in some micro evasives, nothing to big. The Dr1 will have to fly almost straight to maintain his attack and your wingy can nail him easy.

Woe is me for I have sinned  :pray Forgive me fellow Cameliers I was tempted by The Dark Side and found wanting. One of the best Dr1 drivers was up there, waiting. We both knew what he was waiting for.... my inevitable demise. Yet again. My eyes strayed to the ugly little triplane recently captured and now beckoning to me from it's place on the end of the flight line. I have to confess I weakened brethren, I lost my faith and gave in to temptation  :devil

I was already having second thoughts as I climbed into the cockpit, which stank of Hun beer, vomit and terror-pee. There was a small photograph of a sheep pinned next to the airspeed indicator and a bag of stale bread and wurst sausage I ever smelled under the seat. After starting the engine there was a short ground roll and the strange little contraption lifted off the grass. I would have to stand up to see over the wings. Having flown it a few times before I already knew this wasn't my natural ride. Once in combat I would likely find myself in a worse predicament than usual, an unfamiliar aircraft with (for me) poor views and peculiar control response characteristics. Up against one of the Top Gun Huns. Oh dear. Too late to turn back now, here he comes.....

To my suprise I find myself turning, diving, swooping and zooming all over the sky in concert with my opponent. But this is no dance of passion, no Camel here making love to the soft liquid air of the sky..... more a brutal rape with no mercy, no compassion, nothing but the end result in mind...... disgusting.

We were down to tree level at last, and now it would come. My opponent's experience on type would finally tell and I'd be dead. Determined to fight to the bitter end I haul the little pigpen into a hard flat right hand turn, very unimaginative but he does the same, we both know that the first to break out will probably die. I watch for his usual 'creep', where he slowly reels me in and climbs onto my six. But once again I am suprised, four turns, five, six.... we're still exactly opposite each other, both right on the edge and desperate not to make a mistake  :joystick:

Now he's trying something, what's this....? He straightens a little, picks up speed, climbs a little and hauls extra hard back into the turn. Hmmmm it seems to have given him an edge so I reciprocate and now we're looking at each other from opposite sides again. He tries another, I counter. This goes on for a little while, no gains to either of us. Then someone shows up and starts buzzing us.... phew a friendly. My opponent ignores the first two firing passes then his nerve goes and he breaks left. My aim is not good in this beast, I'm standing up above the sightline but he's very close and I gun him down easily with a three second burst.

I dropped the triplane back into the field with no finesse, I was just glad to get back alive and climb out of the thing. If this was the price of victory I decided they could keep it. I looked the thing over as I rolled a cigarette and stood there smoking it quietly, deep in thought and totally disgusted with myself. At the end of the day it's not whether you live or die, but how you live and die. I flicked the stub of my cigarette into the cockpit and walked away, the crackling of burning fabric fading as I put more distance between myself and that ugly stain on the history of aviation.

 :)

Prill is that you? Priller of F2B fame? Surely not.... Prill would never cross the lines, change his name and fight for the other side. I must be mistaken  :headscratch:

Anyway, the Kaiser ate too much sauerkraut and died. Your sacrifice will be in vain. History has already shown us which way this contest ends.... if you value your skin lay down your arms and stay at home with the good lady frau und kleiner kinder. Those who oppose us will be shown no mercy, merely hot lead, cold dirt and the urine of wild goats as they graze the meadows where the fallen come to earth :old:

Thanks to everyone who came along  :salute There was no clear advantage to either side after 2 and a half hours of intense dogfighting. Awesome spectacle, fantastic flying on both sides. Anyone who didn't bag a load of kills do not think for one minute that you let your team down. Everyone there was pulling their weight and had an impact on the outcome.

Special mention to Sid who stayed up through the European night to fight alongside us in our Camels. And I have to add (sorry to be so partisan) that the Allied team in their (mostly) Camels and F2B's flew like demons. When you look at the day to day stats for the Dr1 and the Camel/F2B you would never predict a stalemate like the one we experienced, especially since numbers were about even. Fine job guys :salute

There were many requests to organise more events like this, so stay tuned. I'll throw some ideas around during normal ops and see what ideas come out of it.

I have films for much of the event, no doubt others have also. If anyone specialises in making movies from AH films and wants to do something with them please let me know.

Thanks again, great fun  :x

I've been advised by someone who checked the stats immediately prior to and after our sweep that in fact the Camels shot down one a/c for every two lost. The Dr1's on the other hand shot down two for every one lost. This certainly wasn't evident during the event, it seemed to be blow for blow, and at times we had the opposition pushed right back to their field - something we never experienced. Possibly we were pushing harder and suffering greater losses. But the stats apparently confirm what we already knew, the Dr1 is a deadly little machine, way more effective than you might expect. Only fair to mention that some of them were being flown by experts  :salute

Should have mentioned before, not only Sid but also Shotdown stayed up half the night to fly with us. Great effort.

Was a fun night, i am somewhat supprized to hear the DR1 was kept to a 2 to 1 ratio, (wtg Camels) i know my numbers were nowhere near that, i prolly died 5 times to get one kill, Ehre is pretty much invincible in a DR1, unless you sneak up on him which is just as difficult

don't let it bug you Camel jockeys, you can be proud that it was kept interesting against those little pesky DR1's
