Title: Any Duck Hunters out there?
Post by: Banshee7 on December 30, 2010, 10:58:14 AM
Just wondered how many fellow AH'ers love to duck hunt.  Duck season is the one part of the year I live for.  I've only gotten to go a few times so far this season due to the lack of water, but we have killed quite a few.  Any stories, talk about gear, etc...?

I would post pictures, but I'm not sure how well that would go on here after viewing the other thread.

Love duck hunting as you know Josh :)

This year was pretty crappy though, like you said, low water and even lower at the lake and ponds. Only went a few times and got only a hand full of ducks.

Hey Banshee,

you know I'm a duck hunter.  This is the first season in the last 20 years I have not hunted waterfowl. I strictly bow and gun hunted deer this season.   Ohio had a weird 60 day season. It opened on October 16 and closed the 2nd or 3rd week of November. It was closed for one week and then reopened to finish out the balance of 60 days. So, this year the season ended before Christmas.  As you know Ohio needs the weather to get cold up in Canada and freeze up so the migration will kick in. With the season closing so early this year I said screw it and just hunted deer. I really like the late season hunts because we see lots of migrants and many different species of ducks. Divers and puddlers both.
Last year the season of 2009 I hunted the day after Christmas and shot my first ever drake Pintail. He was a younger bird and did not yet have a sprig on him. So, the crappier the weather it gets for us here in Ohio the more birds we see.

Unfortunately, since we haven't been but three or four times this year, there isn't many pictures, but I have several pictures from last year and previous years.

This is last year
(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/banshee7_2007/Ducks.jpg)

Christmas Eve this year.  5 of us killed a limit of mallards with only 3 hens.  One limit is missing from this picture as one guy had to leave the hunt early.

Instead of posting several posts, I'll just modify this post and add pictures.

Luckily, two of the guys in our hunting club can afford to pump water from a well.  So we have water, they've jsut been busy getting the usual "customers" in on a few hunts.

Last year at the end of the season the ducks started hitting dry land, so we set up in some lay out blinds and smoke their tails.  Since we have several hundred decoys, we cut the keels off of about 50 of them and set them out...worked like a charm.

Over the years the majority of my waterfowl hunts are on Lake Erie. Big water hunting is either hit or miss. The biggest problem is that it is public hunting so other hunters may or may not help. They will either scare birds to or away from you........ I have been hunting Pennsylvania in a small swamp and we really put the smack down on wood ducks. I am hoping the season of 2011 I will return to waterfowl hunting in PA.

Mainly around Lauderdale, Dyer, and Crockett counties.  But, like I said, we only have water on two farms this year so far.

Another good hunt.  7 of us limited out on mallards, and they were all drakes (28!).  We also killed 3 drake pintails.

Duck decoys I have painted over the years.... These are all E Allen decoys that are made out of two part urethane foam that I hand painted.

Here are the calls I use.

Far left - Was a Haydel Honker, but I have cut the reeds and made a few adjustments to make is a Speck Call (Speckle Belly geese....."White Fronted Geese" for the Politically correct people.)

2nd From left - Primos Original Wench Ducks Unlimited Limited Edition.  It's a few years old, at least 10 years old.  The ink has worn completely off of it.

Middle - Primos Bois D'arc Wench, great call, just can't find room on my lanyard for it.

2nd From Right - Primos Acrylic Original Wench Ducks Unlimited Limited Edition.  Just got it last year, great sound!

Far Right - Your guess is as good as mine.  It's so old that the ink is worn off of it, too, but it's a great Canada Honker!

You can see my duck call lanyard on my pintail picture.

Mick Lacy honker call....flute style
Jeff Foiles Timber Rattler duck call....acrylic
Kelly Gadus duck call..acrylic
Primos whistle for Teal,Wigeon,and Pintail

Theres also a cheap woodduck call on the lanyard as well. It works very well for the woddies.

I forgot to add a pic of my mallard hen decoys I painted. These are E Allen decoys as well.

I've got an old Sure Shot Pintail Whistle (Groves, Texas) that was passed down to me from my dad.  I'm not sure how old it is, though.  I don't even take it out of the house.  For whistling ducks I just use my mouth lol

Thanks fellas......As you can tell my drake decoy painting is much better than painting hen decoys. The feathers always give me fits!   I try my hardest.......By the time any duck is well within decoy range they should be dead and not worrying about my painting skills!

Word on that!  One of the hats I duck hunt in has a big white circle logo on it (seen in the Pintail pic).  People ask me about it flaring ducks.  I tell them if they're that close they're hanging on a lanyard in the blind.

A couple of hours from me is this wonderful place called Stuttgart, Arkansas.

Duck hunter's HEAVEN.

Sure, there's good hunting about an hour north of Sacremento, CA, but nowhere near as big as Stuttgart.

This time of year--GOOD LUCK on finding a motel room and most motels have "mud rooms" at the end of each wing that has water hoses and extra towels.  If you aren't in the lobby before 6:30 good luck on there being any "free" breakfast left.

Lots of politicians and company bigwigs reserve entire motel wings for a week.

The duck hunter's mega-store on the north side of town get's stripped bare...the duck call company next door has lines that go on forever.

It's one massive rice field 20 miles in diameter....for night life there's 2 bars for the whole town.  The 2 liquor stores have literally nothing on the shelves after the first couple of nights.

The rest of the year the place is sad, boring, and most kids 19 and older leave and never come back.

I've been wanting to go to Mack's for a while now.  I agree that Arkansas has some great duck hunting, but TN does, too.  I've got a buddy that only hunts in Arkansas and we bring in more than he does.  Maybe it's where he hunts or something like that.

I have been duck hunting for 15 years now. I live in Ohio so the flyway we are in doesn't always produce the birds you want.

A guy I play aces high with also hunts ducks and he lves in Illinois. This guy also hunts with Tim and Hunter Grounds and has invited me out there for one of those trips that you never forget.

I use a Benelli Supernova when hunting waterfowl. Outlaw decoys, and Tim Grounds duck & goose calls.

I prefer to jump shoot ducks on the rivers around here. When all the big water freezes the birds find a river. Wood ducks are prolly the best ducks I like to hunt.

I'm in a lease a couple miles northwest of Humphrey. We go to Mack's Prairie Wings whenever we can, it's a beast of a duck store. It's been slow lately since that big freeze locked the fields down, but earlier some guys in the lease smoked over 200 ducks in four hunts; mostly spoonbills and mixed mallards/teal/gadwall. The best I've done was 21 woodies and 3 mallards at my deer camp.

The best waterfowl hunting I've been on was in Wellington, Kansas. The goose hunting in those defy peanut fields is amazing. Last year we smoked 54 wigeon in less than 10 minutes.

Tyrannis,

You know what you're correct.  I'm sorry I took a shot at you like that. If I can I will delete my posting.  I know one of Flench's threads got deleted about a hunting topic so I took the offense. I will man up and say that I am sorry.

Fishing can be catch and release. Hunting can not.  Dead is dead. I eat what I shoot. I don't hunt for the thrill and I will not let game go to waste.

I deleted my previous post.

Yeah , if your not going to eat it don't kill it . I give meat to the Feed The Needy every year up in TN . It is a really good program ..If any of you guy's are close to TN check it out . They need all the meat they can get to help the hungry .
So , when a dude come's in and make's a remark like I DON"T LIKE PIC"S OF BLOOD and so on just goes to show that he should do a little research before making that kind of remark . To me it make's them look like a fool ..
When I hunt now though it's fun I am thinking of the people that don't have any thing to eat and not able to get out and get there own . You would be surprised at the people that don't have meat to eat and every little bit help's . I know that if it was not for me there would be several people around here going without that are on disability and just don't have the money and are not able to hunt for them self's ..So as long as I am able to hunt there will be meat on these people's table . My grammar mite be bad and I can't spell worth a crap but I can shoot and feed the needy ...

Flench,

Ohio has a program as well where hunters can donate venison to the food banks to help feed the less fortunate.  Its a great program. There are many states that have a program. Of course the states all have different acronyms for their programs.

TN and here in AR as well--MANY deer hunters donate a portion of the meat to local homeless shelters and food banks after they have dressed it and in some cases had it processed into deer sausage (at their own expense).

Sure, there are organizational places to donate to but most small town folks already know who to donate it to whether their deep freeze is full or not.

Kansas to has a program.  In fact, i believe most states have the same program.  There are a lot of hunters out there that just want their kill for taxidermy reason and do not eat the meat.

Tyraniss,

From what I have heard about rifle hunting in Ohio is this. The northern part of the state is to flat and the powers that be are afraid of a high powered rifle bullet traveling to far and striking a person or a house.  Also the northern part of the state is densely populated compared to the rest of the state.  Many states have shotgun slug hunting only. Slugs just don't travel as far as a center fire rifle cartridge.

Of course today's sabot slugs have the capability of traveling 200 yards or more.  You just have to use common sense and good judgment before pulling the trigger.

Rifle bullets travel far.  Shotgun slugs don't.  Ohio's terrain as I'm sure you know is by in large flat.  A high power rifle bullet can travel great distances with no surrounding terrain to stop it before it travels said great distance potentially risking the lives of people over a mile from where the shot was discharged.

There are quite a few areas that have hilly terrain but I've hunted all my life in Ohio using a shotgun.  Essentially my 11-87 shooting a 3" Copper Solid is a rifle.  It's accuracy isn't that of a match rifle but I've taken deer at 150 yards with it.  I don't feel I'm missing out on anything a rifle could do and I have the knock down power of anywhere from 3-6 rifle bullets in weight with a 1oz slug.  I use your standard Remington Slugger (2-3/4" 1oz slug) most of the time and carry some Remington Coppersolid 1oz rifled slugs in a plastic sabot should the area I'm hunting require it.

Short answer is the thought is with everyone toting high power rifles there are rounds that are going to be sailed potentially a long way from where they were fired.  No need for that.

down here in clermont county, its moslty woody terrain. makes me thing the rifle round would get stuck in a tree before it ever got close to hitting anyone. least where i am it is.

This is where I hunt in Putnam county Ohio. As you can see around the nine acres of woods I hunt there is pretty much all flat farm land. One of the best spots in Ohio to hunt.

Nevermind.. not even worth it
That's fine and all, but perhaps you could do a little research before misspelling the word "piece" in a threatening email.  It's hard to take a threat seriously when it contains the word "peace".  I was like, "AMEN, BROTHER!  GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!"
What are you talking about now . You need to BACK OFF !! Don't be making false statement's against me . If your not a hunter you need to stay out of these thread's  . I don't see why you are even on this forum , you don't fly so that the hey,,, what do you do ? Oh I know ..Your just here to make trouble and you should get booted for it ..

down here in clermont county, its moslty woody terrain. makes me thing the rifle round would get stuck in a tree before it ever got close to hitting anyone. least where i am it is.

Yeah.  Where I hunt in Jefferson County is just like the terrain across the river in West Virginia that allow rifles.  Doesn't change anything that other places are flat and it's the way it's done.  It hasn't caused me any shortage of meat in 20 gun seasons to use a shotgun.

Watch a tracer round skip and go sailing after the ricochet.  That will paint a very real picture about just what a deflected bullet can do and it's alarming.  I hunt quite a lot the farms and areas around central Ohio for Coyotes and other varmints.  While I use anything from .308, 22-250 and .223 it's very specific when and where.  I don't take some shots that don't have a safe backstop because I've seen one of my tracer rounds go sailing.  It's a helpless feeling and you're only relying on chance it doesn't hit someone.  Not good enough odds for me.

Tree branches won't stop a high power round nor will it get stuck in them.  I'm fine with the rules the way they are and it's reason enough for me.  Some years ago my dad was on a trip in WV.  He was standing on a hillside when a loud crack and flip of a few leaves happened only yards from where he was standing.  It was a bullet and he never heard the shot.  It makes it real and while it's not a genuine concern for me to be hit by a bullet (lightning has better odds I'd expect) it does cause me worry about my bullets.

I was talking to the guy that owns all of our land about the hunting club's stats for last year.  I wasn't shocked when I found that over 85% of our total ducks were mallards.  And of all the mallards only about 10% were hens.  Our numbers are still mostly drake mallards this year, but they are low due to the lack of water.  Luckily, last night's rain gave us water in almost all of our holes.  30 days left of the season!

My personal favorite way to hunt ducks is jump shooting them. Walk down a river where they are known to be at and sneak on them. For the ducks to not hear you you have to be really quiet. In the winter when all the big water freezes up they have to have moving water and the rivers are the best spots.
