Title: Facebook's worth
Post by: Perrine on January 12, 2011, 12:50:39 PM
I don't think facebook is worth $50 billion.

Heck I even think that there will be dot-com bubble 2.0 and facebook will be one of the casualties :uhoh.

There was already an internet bubble that burst...it was called the late 90's.  You must have missed it.

FB is no where near worth that.  It was valued at $55M as a website as of last year.

Forbes has him listed as 1.5 billion net worth, amazing how one becomes rich off of starting a social website

As long as there's people and those people buy things and services, there'll be a need for places to advertise.

Facebook = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Word on the street is that Facebook won't - after all, it doesn't really have concrete advertising revenue like Google, and
you can buy FB shares, but don't hold it for too long; dump it at the first sign of trouble.

another word on the street is that FB is employing Goldman Sachs to get around a 1000-member rule which states that corporations with 1000 shareholders must release all financial info.  GS just bought a chunk of shares from fB and resold them, all you see is a major investor in GS.
Title: Re: Facebook's worth
Post by: druski85 on January 12, 2011, 02:59:52 PM
It is a limit of 500 shareholders, Perrine.  Yes, there is considerable speculation that they are repackaging the deals through GS in order to skirt the issue.

In terms of value, $50 billion is much too high, but I would put it higher than the $1.5 billion stated in Forbes last year.  Myspace is laying off half of their workforce, and other serious (western) competitors are not posing much of a threat at this point.  It's certainly a story to follow, especially if Zuckerberg decides he's had enough and considers an IPO.

I tried Facebook for about 6 months and found it was only usefull if you wanted to know who got high scores on the range of games they have. I originally thought it would be a good way of keeping in touch with family and friends around the world but sadly not much of that happened, the only things I found out were that my brother needs some wood to make a barn in farmville.
I no longer visit the site and deleted all of the lists I had there.

The 1.5 billion in Forbes last year wasn't what Facebbok was worth, it was what Mark Zuckerberg was worth, and he only owns I believe it's 5 or 6% of the Facebook shares.

He's the youngest billionaire in the world at I believe 26.

I absolutely hate those score updates for the games people play on there, but if you just hit the X at the right of those post you can set it so you never see those again, that cleared a lot of waste up.

I've found Facebook really useful, I get to see whats going on with family members lives that I might not have the chance to talked to all the time, so I always know whats going on with them now, plus I found a lot of old high school friends & old girlfriends I thought I'd never hear from again, so for me Facebook is a great tool.

Regarding facebook, I stinking hate their chat and I'm rather angry that they forced

Remember that AOL was once valued at $166 billion (before the TW merger). It is now at $2.5 billion (and falling).  Like Facebook, many thought that AOL was once the center of the universe.  Something else always comes along.  Or, in the case of AOL, your product becomes obsolete.

Had a Facebook for about three months.

I used it to get in touch with some old friends. I got their phone numbers and addresses and promptly closed out the facebook. Haven't been back.

I also hated all the friend requests from people that I either didn't really like or hardly knew. I felt like a heal, because I would never friend anyone. I just wanted them to go away.

Facebook sucks.

Edit: I misspelled "heel".  :rofl

Never seen that before, but that shows you just where that 55 billion net worth comes from, companies paying big bucks to get there hands on all that data it collects on users.

As for the CIA using it to collect data on people I really don't care, if they want to know what movies I like or what music I listen to there welcome to it.

It's not like they have your SSN, or credit card #'s or anything, at most they have your email address, which just about any website you sign up with has, so what kinda info do you think they have that is in need of protection?

Also you can set your Facebook page so only people who you've selected to be your friends can see any info you have, thats how I have my page set, you have to be my friend to see anything other then my name.

biggest gripe when people say they give away personal information is that you can put your phone number, where you live, your highschool, job, etc. but what most the gripers forget is that all of that is OPTIONAL. facebook doesnt force you to fill in every blank, you do so at your own "risk". and also stated above you can set your stuff to private/block people. first person i blocked was my mother.  :uhoh

Exactly, all that info you mention is all optional, you don't have to add any info to your profile that you don't want to, so if your that worried about that kind of info getting out, just don't add it, and/or set the info to private.

Thank heavens they don't have that info I'm sure they would sell it for a buck if they did, you may be able to set your privacy to friends i understand that and that's not what I'm talking about, Facebook has total control over your profile all the info on it and can use it at there own discretion, be it selling it or giving it away to other companies for other compensations, when facebook first came out i thought how cool i tried it for about a month, then i canceled and deleted all my info on my Profile, i typed my email address into facebook last week for giggles and low and behold all my info came up saying welcome back updating all your info ( after deleting my info 1 1/2 years ago) :huh  ummm i thought i deleted all of my info, they keep it to sell to companies

Yeah you can't completely delete an account on Facebook, which is something I agree you should be able to do, although even if you could and it looked like the info was completely gone to you, I'm sure it would still be somewhere on a computer, which I'm sure is probably something that all web companies like this do.

Now as far as the info itself there really isn't any info, other then your email, that is required for you to list, everything else you put on there you do of your own free will, so if the info is something you don't want shared, don't put it on there.

Facebook is an awesome thing....one of the easiest ways for someone to see what family and friends are doing when your far from them.
They said all of those great things about Myspace several years ago. Myspace was worth billions. Now the stock is worthless when compared to what it was in the early 2000's.  It fell to the wayside when Facebook came along just as Facebook will go down when the next cool internet fad comes along..

I know people all the time compare Facebook to Myspace, saying that Myspace was big at one time & look at it now, but I think it's different with Facebook, with Facebook it's more interactive, you can communicate and see what your friends & family are doing a lot easier, on Myspace the only way to tell what one of your friends was up to was to actually go to his/her Myspace page, with Facebook you just go to your own page and you can see what their doing, so it's a lot easier and that's what lead to everyone jumping ship from Myspace to Facebook.  Facebook isn't gonna be going the way of Myspace, at least not for a long time.
