my jeep wrangler's acting up a bit.
89 2.5L 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, 4x4, no a/c.
this morning on the way in to work, she started acting up a lil. headlights flashing, radio won't stay tuned, etc.
i took a look at basics, and thought i had it, as she was near perfect on the way home...then it started again.
i figure it has to be a bad ground, or something shorting. gonna pull her in the bay tomorrow and find it.
have any of you guys had this type of problem? what i mean, is there a common problem like this with the older wranglers? this is my first one, and i've not worked on many.
thanks doods@!!

YJ's are the most finicky. I'd go with the ground issue.
-
I have a '97 SE 5 speed manual 4 Banger. Occasionally the dash stops working. Speedometer and tach stop and airbags light turns on. I give it a good thump on top and that solves it. As for the noises I just turn up the radio.
*hijack *
Anybody want to buy a '97 Jeep wrangler SE 5 speed manual 4x4, 60000 miles and broken a/c? It seats 4 and I have a family of 5. Great firehouse car, never get stuck in the snow. Black, soft top, hard top doors, steal trunk lid, steal glove box, cut in driver side rear window and it's dirty (it's a Jeep what do you expect?) In chicago.

i'll actually mention that to a friend of mine. she was pissed that i bought a jeep, because she's wanted one for quite awhile. she's in philly, but i'm sure if she were interested, she'd work that out.
and i tried the thump on the dash thing too. :devil
-
Hey CAP, I hate to say it but your Jeep is possessed. You need a Priest.
You could tell the Priest to bless a stream, then drive your Jeep through it. That's the fun way. The other way involves Linda Blair and pea soup, but is not advisable.
-
Real jeep people call A/C putting the top down. Heat is alittle different. :D
03' rubi and yes ac is broke hehe next it'll be the radio gah, oh well I have the wind.
-
and the voices in your head as usual :D

Let me know, I've needed a reason to get out that way so I can bother Pipz and Henchman :P. I'm actually waiting to replace it until May roughly. 1- to get me out of the winter and 2- I'm waiting on my retro check from the city for pack pay and my tax return so I have more to put down on a new/used car.

As you can see, it comes with a security system. :D

The exterior doesn't look too bad but it's down right scary under the hood and I won't even crawl underneath it anymore. It has passed emissions every time and as recently as this last fall. Also my coworker washed half of it in the fall of '09 so now it looks like 1 of those cars from the Nu Finish commercials. I hose it down every once in a while but that's about it.
-
Cap, take it out to 1/4 mile, perhaps it just needs to eat some mud :)

Buy his Jeep. You will have a means to help the less fortunate (intelligent may be a better word) My final tally was up to 7 on Wednesday night
(sorry about the wipers, I was the only one in the Jeep so I had to set the camera down)

so far, i found a bad ground on the interior, 2 bad(although they still worked) brake light bulbs, and all of the underhood grounds i could find were oil soaked, and corroded. it still does funky things to the gas gauge when i put my foot on the break, and when i reconnected the battery, the alarm went off.....that made me think of the fact it flashes the lights too. gonna remove that tonight.
it's pissin me off, because this is an 89. not much to it. this should be a simple find/fix. i think i spend so much time on the hard stuff, i've forgotten how to trouble shoot the simple stuff.

Alarm? :headscratch:

Alarm? :headscratch:
i bought it from my cousin. he went to college in princeton.

Hell, I don't even lock mine. Even when I park in Philly.
I'd rather anyone looking to rob me just open the door to find nothing of value (because I don't leave anything important in it) than to cut my top and actually cost me money.
I have even gone so far as to put a sticker on the dash stating that fact.
:D
As for the ignition? I have 3, 3-way toggle switches that I have wired as a kill switch :rock
-
well, it's comin out tonight, as i suspect it as part of the possible problem. when i looked under the dash, the alarm module, and some of the wiring is zip tied to the clutch pedal return spring.
figure that one out.........

Sounds like a winner :aok
There used to be a guy where I worked that had an alarm with an interior motion sensor on his Wrangler. Every time the wind blew in the summer, his Little Tree (yes, he had an air freshener on the mirror with the top down) would flop around and set off the alarm.
It got so bad that the owner said that he would have to disable the alarm at work or he was going to start docking his pay by 10 minutes every time it went off because that is about how much company time he wasted to walk out, reset it, and walk back into the shop. (it was a big parking lot)

this one has a motion sensor too......i tucked that under the carpet......

I think the carpet was the first thing I removed. Second were the drain plugs, followed by those flotation devices attached to the ends of the bumpers.
:rofl
It has got be annoying.
Never understood it on a vehicle that you can remove the top and doors... Just about everything sets it off.

AS i screw that stuff up it'll come off. he had me put fog lights in it about 18 years ago, and i removed those silly bumper thingies then.
-
I don't understand a lot of the stuff on the newer Jeeps.
Aluminum wheels being one of them. Bend one and it's ~$200-300 for another.
I've got Cragar Soft 8's. Bend one on the trail and out comes the BFH. Enough to get you home and buy another for $49.99 :D
Another thing is anything that is in front of the tires. One can only climb something as tall as the bumper as it impedes the tire from rolling over it...

you have posi rears in that? that was one thing i noticed about this one. it's got open rears at both ends. kinda sucks compared to my old chevy that had a posi in the rear, and limited slip in the front.
THAT truck never got stuck
-
one leggers :cry
i'll still never be "stuck", though. As long as there is something to hook to within 200'. 'll get out at 13 feet/minute FTW :rock

yea, i saw that in the pic. i've got a warn winch brand new in the box, that's gonna find its way onto this, if i don't sell it in the springtime.
i don't think i can get the angles you're getting either, as the 89's had leafs at all four corners.

The upside is that it's cheaper to lift with leafs :aok
I have no lift yet (hence the reason my fender flares are wallowed out in the shape of the tires)
I have some 2" spring spacers and 2" body lift spacers that I turned down out of some UHMW polyethelyene. Should give me some decent clearance. I'm also got some 1" tube that I am going to make flat fenders out of.
Right now it's too effing cold to go put any of that on though. (i do not have a garage, yet)
-
got it.
bad grounds on the passenger side of the engine block, right near the oil dipstick.
bad ground under the dash
bad connection on the alternator feed wire to the battery + terminal
bad ground on the drivers side valve cover to the firewall.
and i think that the alarm was screwing me over too. it's already in the circular file.
-
check all the grounds....especially the one on the back of the engine

hey......'nother question for you jeep guys. a customers husband gave me a catalogue for quadra tec
they're an online jeep parts supplier. any of you ever heard of them? good? bad?

know what's funny about that? ever since i got my power probe, my good old test light has been relegated to testing ignition wires.

I'm looking at a 1977 CJ7 golden eagle on craigslist.
I call the kid up that has it. In the pics on CL there are no head lights. When I ask him where they are he says and I am quoting him:
"I think it's the light switch "
I had a 77 CJ5 that was a nightmare to deal with.

I buy from Quadratec often... No complaints. They stock just about everything you could possibly need for your YJ.
My old YJ (1992) was largely trouble free, except for a loose ground behind the dash, which caused the instruments to go wacky. I found it, installed a new lug and the problem went away. I completely rewired my '63 Willys CJ5, but that wasn't much of an ordeal. Not much to rewire in a Jeep of that vintage. I was able to find new harnesses in catalogs, and for those I couldn't find, I made myself, using modern connectors spliced where needed.
My '08 JK Wrangler has been absolutely gremlin free, despite everything but the steering being routed through the computer... Needed a reflash to enable the tranny temp idiot light. For some reason, the '08s and '09s didn't have it enabled via the original factory software. Required a recall to get them all done.
With about 58" of snow on the ground since Dec. 27, the Jeep has been in the snow quite a lot. Now, they are predicting another 1 to 2 feet next week... I have no idea where to put this new snow. The piles along our driveway are already 6 feet high, and the plows have pushed snow two feet higher than our mailbox (had to shovel it out to get mail delivery). Today it reached 37 degrees (tropical heat wave!) and I was finally able to wash the JK... Useless in some respects, as a short drive will get it covered with dirty snow again, but I needed to get the salt off and sand/repaint some minor rust on the passenger side rock slider/rail.
Here's a few shots taken on Jan 12, after we had 20.5" on top of the 18" two weeks prior (Yesterday, we got another 16" after 4" on Friday).
