does anyone know how successful these were? basically they were P-38s fitted with a glass nose and a bombsight, and the idea was to mark targets for other P-38s to drop on.

Successful in what way? Did they perform their jobs successfully? Then the answer would be yes, they were successful in the pathfinder role.

If you wanted to try the idea out, you can, more or less, simulate it with a Mosquito Mk XVI in the Droop Snoot role.
-
works in game, a while back a few of us loaded some bombs on 38's and flew formation with a B-25C lead and dropped on his command, got decent coverage on a town if I remember right (was back on the old town layout).

Since the P38 is my favorite plan (I fly it almost exclusively), I've always thought this would be fun to do sometime. Drop the bombs, devastate the town, and now you have a bunch of fighters ready for the furball.
-
Interesting! So they would just pickle their bombs in level flight while still in formation?
Not bad... turn one bomb sight into 4...
This would be really fun to do some day in the MA... :)

sounds interesting :old:

if anyone decides to do this, give me a shout. I'd love to be part of it. :old:

Obviously, since it has guns and all

It's okay, not everyone can dogfight a B-17 ;)

A bunch of nice, fatty targets at least...
Droop snoot variant didn't have any guns, you know...

Thats what bomber formations did---not that many planes had a bombardier who could do that, several planes would drop on cue from one

HA if i ever get online i will definitely be having some fun with the B-17 in a furball-- 11 .50 cals? too good to be true in a dogfight

If you ever got online you'll learn what happens when you try and dogfight in a B-17 or you can ask Tyrannis what happens. :devil

we've done the exact same with Beefcake calling the drop in the pathfinder 25C - worked great :aok
a mossie XVI and some VIs would work well too, or a 25C and 25Hs :)
-
A Boston would be fine too. Pretty fast in the cruise, and costs no perks. I sometimes use it for radar killing, and am dropping at about 300 mph. That is as fast as a heavily loaded fighter can go straight and level.
Which one carries most? P-38 or Jug?
Anyway, very nice thread and thanks for the revision of a tactic well employed in the RL WW2.
-
The Jug can carry more than the Lightning. 2-1000 lbs & 1-500 lbs.
The Lightning just the 2-1000 lbs. :old:

I forgot the boston + A20s option :aok
how about Ju-88 and 110s?

Who do you think we roped into flying the B-25. :)

A-20 wings: 4-500lbs or 4-250 lbs; fuselage: 4-500 lbs, 2-500 lbs, 4-250 lbs
Boston 4-500 lbs, 2-500 lbs, 4-250 lbs
JU-88 wings: 4-500 kg, 4-250 kg, 2-250 kg & 2-500 kg, 2-500 kg, 2-250 kg
internal: 10-50 kg, 20-50 kg
Bf 110G-2 wings: 4-50 kg; internal: 2-500 kg, 2-250 kg
I checked the hangar & these are the loadout options. :old:

i would use it :aok, would be good for scenarios too

You only have one droop snoot, leading the formation. All the rest are fully functional Lightnings. The droop snoot leads everyone to the target, and signals when to drop. Everyone drops. Now the droop snoot heads for home, and the rest of the formation goes on to dogfight, or strafe the town, or whatever.
For the bomber pilot, you get to run home in a plane that is much faster than your normal heavy bomber.

The Lightning just the 2-1000 lbs. :old:
This would not be an accurate statement. They did carry a pair of 2000 pounders but found that the 'bang for the buck' wasn't worth the extra risk on pull out and the extra sway braces etc that had to be used when they were carried.

yea, as you can tell from these pics. my gunnery sucks. im such a noob.

well apparently you dont know the difference between dogfighting and flying straight and level while sitting in a gunner position ...
nice hijack btw - thats almost a full page of look-at-me screenies

last 2 are my 2 b29 kills in a b29 when we were furballing.

im hoping someone looks at the pics, thinks "hm, furballing b29s looks like fun!" and msgs me asking to do it. because it was really fun but none of the fighter dweebs in the DA want to do it. :(

Both right, in game the P-47 can haul more ordnance because it has the third bomb shackle under the fuselage. Historically while not used often the P-38 could carry a heavier load than what we get in game.

You would have thought by now that you would've learned that bombers do not make good dogfighters...

doesnt mean they arent fun to dogfight with eachother.
why so serious?

I found these loadouts for the Lightning. It would be great to have all these options. :old: :rock

well, i wouldnt know but it is somewhat fun to just be an escort in a B-17 without bombs and 25% fuel... even if you die anyways

it is.
when you get in the game. go into the dueling arena.
be a knight.
go to the bomber section. field a35.
choose a b17 formation (or 24s,29s) take off NW.
you'll have to cross the gap to reach the furball lake. but dont worry. the plateaus are each level to eachother. so you should be able to clear it right from takeoff.
little advice tho: climb between 12-15k. if you go below 10k you can pretty much be swarmed by 8-9 planes at once.
but if you stay around 12k. they have to climb up to get you. which usually means you'll only have 1-3 attacking you at once.
if you want tell me next time you'll be ingame. and we can go to the DA. and dogfight b17s lol.

I guess the 110's carry too little, but A-20 quite a bit. Got to check this out and post back.
Anyway, this is a very interesting idea. Level bombing from maybe 15K at high speed, and then dive in for strafing. A20, isn't that like 8x500 lbs? And with THAT nose!
Tiffie 2000 lbs, Mossie 2000 lbs, F4U 2000 lbs, but Jug and P38? And the Boston can do 1000 lbs?
Would you accept this named as a "Pathfinder bombing mission"? I'd like to try one ;)
