Title: The "Gorgeous Airplane" thread
Post by: Reaper90 on February 19, 2011, 05:05:05 PM
A post in another thread got me thinking, when someone posted a pic of some Italian aircraft with the comment about gorgeous "art deco" design.... Got me thinking.

I'd venture a guess that most, if not pretty much all of us here have a strong appreciation for aircraft, not just for their role as implements of war but also as marvels of engineering and design, and as art....

I personally look at the "golden age" of aircraft design as being the late '20's to the '40's.....the early aerodynamacists penned some gorgeous aircraft...

in that vein, I invite you all to post up the aircraft that most inspires you visually  ---

For me, I'm drawn to a few, for different reasons....

The de havilland DH88 Comet racer....

The Chilton DW-1 (designed by two young men whom had been trained by and worked for de Havilland)

I have this strange love for the simple, fun look of the Chilton...... I managed to acquire a full set of plans recently.... there are a few that have been built since the original handful of racers in the '30's..... :airplane:

What airplane goodness stirs you guys' souls?

Post 'em up!

My true love.  The Spit XII.

Combo of good looks, power and punch.  Spits from the I to the XII are the prettiest prop planes ever.  The later Griffon birds post XII lost a bit of that look in my opinion.  I suppose you could argure the VIII combined all the refinements into the best looking of the full span Spits, but I'm an XII guy :)

No "Gorgeous" airplane thread would be complete with the Connie or Boeing Clipper.

If we're gonna talk seaplanes, the Dornier Do26 is a gorgeous airplane....

Four (4) Jumo 700hp diesel engines, 2 pushing and 2 pulling! And interestingly the rear pusher engines could be raised 10 degrees for takeoff ---

I'll always have a special place in my heart for these bad boys as I used to work at General Dynamics during the height of their production.

And just for coolness factor the Transavia Airtruk from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

Just curious as to how an AC-130 series aircraft is undetectable??? I have a buddy that flies them and there is a reason they fly at the high altitude and at night over in the Stan...you never know who is holding a MANPAD that can reach out and touch you at lower altitude. Plus at night its hard to see those dark planes; which disappear as the sun rises over the Hindu Kush mountains.

I still can't figure out how one could brag about thinking such a pedestrian looking plane is most beautiful of all warbirds.  Like comparing Beagle to Greyhound or Doberman.  The only exception is a clipped-wing XIV.

I'll second the Bugatti and YF-23.

One of the reasons it never caught on was cost.  You could get a Citation or Lear for the same money.
We had very few come in over the years, think the Piaggio Avanti might have a better run.

Yeah it is an La-9, the only airworthy one in the world as far as I know, I belive they just got it flying again late in 2010

Nice. It's a shame more of those aircraft aren't still around..... especially the LA5s and even more the LA7. I was reading up on Kozhedub's White 27... didn't realize there wasn't but one solitary LA7 airframe still in existance, and it is in the museum in Moscow, painted to represent White 27.... and is hardly complete and likely never to be airworthy again....

Such an important plane to have all but vanished......

this is her right now. Just had her wings attached, engine is finally refitted and completely installed. Just have to finish putting the cockpit back together and getting everything finished then give it its annual and flight test it. If you are wondering what happened to it, it flipped while landing at our airport coming home from an airshow and became a little crunched, in Spring 2009. It was out all last year's air show season and we just got it back in december. It was supposed to be back and flying last may, but that didnt happen.

There are a few of them kicking around in small museums around Russia and one in prague I was talking with one of the employees at the Central air force museum during one of my prior visits and he said the biggest problem they have with it is the fact that the glue is of poor quality and the wood rots away I agree that it is a shame that there arnt many around though, but in the north america there are plenty of Yak's as far as I know

Your right, Russian planes do have bad performance, its not like we built the fastest propeller driven aircraft in the world ( also the loudest  )
or its not like the MiG -25 was the first plane in the world to climb above 35,000m
or what about building some of the greatest performing aircraft of ww2? but heck what do I know right?

Do you have any facts that back up your theory?

And showing Russian prototype planes does not count, also showing US planes given to Russian (such as P-39) does not count either.

Russian aircraft PERFORMANCE, is almost always superior to the US aircraft. However technology and weapon systems is where the US aircraft win out.

I remember Eagl, our resident F-15 pilot once said and I quote: "The f-15 is the best BVR aircraft ever designed save the Raptor, but if the SU-27 gets close, he will fly up your assshole before you know whats happening"

its just my opinion. from korea&vietnam  americans came to dominate the skies over russia built planes.

plus (at the time) the USAF and the luftwaffe would run mock training maneuvers and combat situations with the f15vs the mig29 every september (they have an official name for it, cant remember).

from there training they came to the conclusion the f15 was a much more superior plane over the mig29. beating it 15 our of the 18 engagements they played.

In korea & vietnam you did not have russian pilots (well you had less than ~5), so what good is a good airplane if you don't have a pilot that can fly well? USAF training was/is not comparable to korean of vietnamese. Also as far as I remember US pilots had a lot of trouble with Mig-15s in korea, and most of thous were korean pilots, vietnam did not seem so easy either.
Take a look at what USAF really thinks about the Mig-21: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reVZ9aPYi9A&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reVZ9aPYi9A&feature=related)

Would you have an official report for the F-15 vs Mig-29?

I'm not saying that Russian airplanes are better, but I'm not saying that US planes are better either. (at least of that time)

I dont believe there is anything different between the L-21 and the super cub but im not 100% sure. Ours is a 1954 L-21B which is the same as the PA-18-135. both are powered by a 135HP Lycoming O-290-D2 engine.

As posted by MachFly, J35 but if you want a miniature try this SAAB 210.

The Saab 210, nicknamed the 'Lill Draken', was a scale test bed used in the development of the supersonic J35 Draken.

The Saab 210 'Lill Draken' was primarily used to test and develop the highly swept wing design and better understand the flight characteristics of such a design.

The aircraft was powered by a single Armstrong Siddeley Adder AS.A.1 turbojet engine. During its lifetime the Saab 210 'Lill Draken' was modified to improve flight dynamics and better represent the final design of the full size aircraft.

The Swedes make some nice looking a/c, ie J39
