Just got a phone call from my mom. She told me that my cousin, and his wife, are in Libya trying to get out. They travail around the world and teach. Still waiting word if they got out.
-
I hope all is well with your extended family, not the praying type but you do have my best wishes!
:(

Hope they make/made it to the nearest US Embasy if not out of the country already.
-
Tell them to bribe their way out when possible, but be discrete when making an exchange. Hide money and copies of id's in their clothes when traveling. Also, designate a meeting place should a group member become lost.
-
UPDATE: Just got this on FB from them,
"Not till Wednesday, its very, very bad. Reports of military handing out weapons to civilians. Thousands of people at the airport trying to get out. All... of the teachers are staying at school trying to get out." They have been in Tripoli, Libya for the last 3 years. i Hope they can get out by then.
-
Scary stuff... I wish them the best of luck, and tossing some prayers in on top of that.
-
Here is his web site. He and his wife been to a lot of places.

UPDATE: about 10 hours they will be out of there. All the teachers are laying low at the school, awaiting for their flight time. So far the protesters are targeting the Government not the non-Lydians people. Airport remains crazy as many non-Libyans are trying to get out. U.S. Embassy is completely evacuated so no point of going there.

seeing the nutcase in command is blaming it all on the US it would not have been wise to have kept the embassy staff there. I bet you their embassy phone # still works though and they're trying to coordinate evacs.
Also, in such a situation there is very little the embassy can do to 'rescue' people.. a US citizen stranded in some other city is literally on his own and can at best contact the embassy and be told where to go to be safe or evacuated. There will be nobody coming for him.
-
UPDATE: Just got this via FB
Thanks, hope to get out tomorrow. Lots of flights canceled today, they don't want to bring in their aircraft and the airport is complete bedlam. We've lived in some tough places and seen some bad things but this is really bad. Its going to get a lot worse. Everyone is left to themselves. Teachers are very low one the totem pole but I think the embassy is going to step in, I'll keep you posted
They are hearing shooting near by the school where they are hiding. As of now, they are hiding till U.S. rescue them or something.
-
If Americans need getting out, we'll get em out. We do it more often than you think. :salute

I sure hope so. They are hearing gun shots all around the school and have no protection. Hopefully, it is the protesters that are celebrating rather then killing. :salute

Why any Americans would even consider traveling to some of these countries is a complete mystery to me. Just doesn't seem like the brightest of travel plan ideas.
But I hope for your sake they manage to get hoe again safe N sound. And soon.
-
They were waiting for you to accept the job Bableon.

Seriously. Who do you folks think guard US embassies over seas now?
it's private security contractors, not US marines. Think Joe Plumber
turned "foyer defender" cares much beyond the paycheck?
(to talk about who set this crap up would go straight into politics)

Some folks like to live on the edge. The 4 Americans on the captured sailing vessel knew they were in dangerous waters. They chose to take the risk and seperated from the other vessels. All 4 people are now dead because of somali pirates.
I hope these folks get out ok.

It's pretty obvious they didn't watch enough Animal Kingdom as kids. Get one separated from the pack....done!

Cool. Just confirming that they were over there teaching Christianity. That would be like swimming among sharks with a full chum bucket attached to your diving gear.

Hmmm, I looked at the websites for the individual schools and didn't find any religious curriculum or religious motivation in any of their mission statements.
American school of Tripoli is run by the U.S. Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools. The site says that they will be closed until March 6th. (We shall see about that.)
Hope everyone gets out safe.

LOL, just math. I am now talking to his brother. He is not sure if his brother and wife got on the ferry or not. Communication is leak as they keep turning the internet and cellphone towers off.
-
Hope they make it out of there soon :pray
It sounds like the protestors have control of the east of the country (or at least, Gaddafi doesn't have control of it). Either way, that's probably a good thing.

Most of the article aside, it has some information on U.S. Embassy and how we are getting our people out.

Sure, Joe Plumber turned federal rent-a-cop to guard the gate 6-ways from sunday. But I highly doubt Joe Plumber pulled the aircraft and logistics out of his rear crack to evacuate all the state department employees and families. It's traditionaly the state department's (ONLY) job to look after and represent the interests of our country and citicens serving in that country or anywhere abroad.
@ Skuzzy: How does my earlier post expressing my personal opinion and discontent that the [insert deragotary statement here] statesmen abandoned their posts and primary duty at the first sign of trouble to save their own hides rather than doing their job and primary duty cross rule #14 and not the above post responding to it? :headscratch:

CNN news ferry arriving, Americans arrive in Malta!
you might see them

Heh...seems that the UK landed two C-130s in the desert to evacuate some workers, on airstrips secured by local militia...not bad!
