Title: forget adding new planes for a bit, update current ones.
Post by: fullmetalbullet on February 22, 2011, 10:58:55 PM
Yes i Say, Since we got the B-29 and what a horrible start for it. i think HTC should devote the time now to updating the current aircrafts we have. the lancs, Ki-67 Ki-61 C-47 P-40s SBD TBM3, umm what else am i missing on the list of airplanes that need to be updated.

Easy Tyrannis, its day one for the B-29, it will have bugs.  Should have been here for the graphics change and the Beta testing of the graphics.  That was a hoot, but HTC worked very hard and everything was ironed out quickly.

So sit back and relax.

I don't understand the need for detailed eye candy.

New plane types enhance playability of the game.

Better plane details is like asking for a fancy coffin.

I found that they are very easy compaired to other bombers in the game, just point and click, I would say the bigger "problem" other people are having is it taking a few pings and lighting up like a christmas tree

Right I forgot about the PT boat, we do have a new one. But It's the T-34/85 that got updated, not the /76. The B-24 does have a yoke (compared to most older planes), however besides that it still looks old.

+1 for new cockpit art for the remainign planes.  If there's a way to do it without losing the current skins (esp for the P-40), even better.

The T34/76 came out with the B24 and Ki-84 and was the basis of the new standard

Then it seems as the standard has changed.

Compare the /76 to the /85, they're both at the same standard.
The AHII standard has increased rather significantly from the B24 and Ki 84, though, and though they are generally considered updated it would be nice to see them reworked a bit once the genuinely old aircraft are done.

Immersion?
The new plane models look fantastic.
Also none of the gun positions on old models have rear sights, they're impossible to use with TrackIR.

The fundemental difference between old and new skins is that the old ones were built for 256 res art and then rescaled to 1024.

When the art was only 256 by 256 pixels HTC artists used various tricks to get enough detail on the skin. Things like mirroring; using the same piece of art for both the left and right wing panels. Also stretching the edges of the side art over top and bottom of the fuselage and adding little patches where detailed items like insignia or noseart went.

The later skins designed for 1024 by 1024 generally use very little of this mirroring and stretching, which makes them much easier to skin accurately. The B-24 is an example of a later skin, there is no mirroring of major parts (wings, fuselage etc.) and very little stretching.

New rides like the B-29 and Panther tend to generate more player interest than remodelled ones. Look at the amount of BBS traffic for the B-29 vs the A6M5. So I'd guess HTC will continue with their policy of adding one or two of each on each update.

but see i thin kyou guys should be focusing on the updated textures for the old war horses. i myself fly Ki-67s and i would love to see and updated Ki-67 texture res.

I think what Greebo says is true about new models generating more interest, and maybe the best compromise is to create a new model variant when updating the old skin/cockpit art - e.g., release the P-40N when updating the '40B and '40E; the Ki.100 when the Ki.61 is updated (Ki.100 benig a re-engined version of the Ki.61); the Yak-3 when updating the Yak series.

update the KI67

I remember when the Ki-67 was added, i thought it was a pretty decent model, and it's got about 5 separate bitmaps for the interior, no reason why it shouldn't look bloody good inside. I've not done much by way of IJA skins or interiors but could have a go, or there might be other skinners who would. Would a reskin help?

If it's textures you want, then i guess i'm offering to do that, or you could ask in the custom skins forum and might get someone with more experience to do it. Do you have a particular Ki-67 in mind?

omg what i mean is do like what they did to the A6M5b, update it. i want HTC to update all the older aircraft. not new skins not new aircraft but updated aircraft.
Title: Re: forget adding new planes for a bit, update current ones.
Post by: crowbaby on February 25, 2011, 04:24:20 AM
ahh, you want new 3d models, not textures.

Well, i guess that is a little less work for HTC than adding new aircraft, cos it doesn't need a new flight model, etc. However, for the person doing the 3D modelling it's pretty much the same amount of work whether they're updating an old aircraft or making an entirely new one. Therefore I can see why it's more appealing all round to add new aircraft. The whines seem to be a little louder for that as well.

(In the meantime, reskinning could make a big difference to some of the ugly ducklings, and it is something the community can do.)
