I'd rather see tracers use better gfx technology which is nowadays common, instead of the decade-old plain texture animation. Bloom, pixel shading, etc..

Or does AH have that already nowadays?

Post by: moot on February 28, 2011, 10:21:38 AM
Hey Kweassa :)

I don't think bloom would fit too well with AH's old school crispness, but pixel shading would definitely be an excellent improvement if it was used subtly enough.

Huh.. Thanks for that info.
Might as well copy the whole thing here.  I couldnt find ussr and nazi germany flags in same format.  A table would be more of a breeze to look up with but that takes too long to make with the forum table system.

+1 historical tracer colors.

how representative of the actual color would the tracers be? i mean i dont expect to see royal blue stuff zipping past me... maybe i should though?

I like the idea, I would still have mine off though.

Wich makes the point of turning tracers off for specific planes.

I know a way, but it is only possible to use one color for all tracers atm.  So all would be red or blue or yellow, etc. Also, it is terrain specific. Only one custom tracer color per terrain (with what we have to work with now).

One thing I'd also like to see regarding tracers is distiction between regular and smoke traces. Right now all traces leave a well defined smoke trail. In real life there was spme slight somke emission from .50 cal tracers for example but nothing as clear as we have in the game and same goes for rifle calibre rounds. Germans for example widely used smoke tracers. MG151/20 smoke tracers left a clear and thick spiraling smoke trail. MG151/20 rounds leave spiraling trail currently...it could be a bit thicker tho. So in short I'd like to see the smoke removed from weapons that didn't typically fire dedicated smoke tracers.

Some thought should be given to those who may have difficulty seeing certain
colours of tracers (IE: those who are colourblind, old farts).

Perhaps a check list in preferences?
---Tracers---
[ ] Original (current)
[ ] Historical
[ ] Custom

Custom would have a drop down list, similar to the current individual sound levels
list. It would include all types of weapons and tracer colours. Possibly categorized
by Country -> Plane -> weapon platforms for selected plane.

Good footage of the smoke tracers used by the Luftwaffe:

.50 cal tracers:

Some smoke trails can be seen but it isn't IMO as prominent as in the game.

i do have issues seeing my tracers in certain situations but it has more to do with the cloud layer 'washing out' the yellow tracers. would settle for all tracers being the same color but user specified.. red-orange would be great lol

maybe i need to learn to aim w/o them? ahaha  :lol

Anyone asked hitech if adding multiple tracer colors will impact our FPS? Obviously he knows about the colors. The question is, why over all of these years has he not coaded for them? Granted we would probably have the same choice as with skins to see only the default tracer.

Something seemingly this simple has been left as is for so many years other than the smoke spirals.
