"**Comments back on** Not going to sweat the trolls from now on. To answer the questions, I was videoing two trucks that were holding up traffic, was using my iPhone, and had the phone pointed to the trucks, but I was watching the road. It's not like a camcorder where you have to look into the viewfinder people, think about it before you say something ignorant. Thanks for all the positive feedback - and to =3 for making me laugh, you are hilarious.
Ok- so I only posted this video because my son wanted to see if we could get 1,000 hits. And I thought maybe having a little fun with it might help me deal with it too. I disabled comments because people were being so incredibly mean. So far I've been accused of faking it (really?), been blamed for everything from the high price of gas global warming, and it was getting out of hand. Believe it or don't, it really did happen. Analyze the why's and how's if you need to, but I only thought it was an incredible dose of reality and that people would be shocked to see it. And really people, why in the world would you have to be so hateful??? Pay attention at the 30 second mark. No- it wasn't an April Fools joke, it really happened, and I was fine."

that's a 4x4 not a 2x4...could have ended badly for the guy driving. :O

Saw this on MSN news. Definitely a scary thing to happen.
Looks to me that she was tailgating just a little...(can't even count 1/1000, 1 second, between em)
And if I didn't know any better, I'd say that the truck she was following a little closely, intentionally hit the board. However, it's kinda obvious that he was just giving the bigger truck passing on his right some room, or was a little scared of it (which is likely). Since he's hauling a trailer, it's not like he can hit his brakes and/or jink to avoid it.
All in all, had she not been following THAT closely, it's VERY likely that she wouldn't have had that happen to her. One lucky lady.

crazy...you can see it on the road right before the truck runs over it.
people were saying it was planned or set up.

well, definitely not following at a good "safe" distance but by the time the board got airborne there were 2 full hash marks between her and the trailer...if each hash mark is according to dot standards at 10ft long and the gap between is 30ft...there was about a 50ft distance between them...considering the point where the board entered the windshield had she allowed just 1 more hash mark in separation, adding 40ft...that board would have hit the grille or bumper...less life threatening but still could have caused problems...she would have missed it if she had been in the right lane...
i think the speed limit sign shows 55mph.
-
When I watch the video the board appears to be 2 feet or so in the left lane, and it appears truck is moving over a bit to try and avoid it. Honestly I see this more than I would like around my area, boards, plastic pieces, heck even trash bags that have fallen off a vehicle and are left in the lane.
The bigger question is why is this person holding a camera in one hand and driving with the other?

who the eff would plan that/even be able to plan that.

I put it on the bbs (the description) because I know most people are too lazy to read it on YT....apparently it doesn't work here either...

this reminds me of an accident a few years ago here, some idiot thrown a block of wood from a bridge over
a highway killed instantly a passanger (woman 33.). The Driver (her husband) and her two kids survived. At least
they found the idot, he is in prison now... he said he was on drugs and it was boring that day, then he saw the
block of wood and thought that might be fun... :(
edit: btw. this changed my driving style, every time i drive now under a bridge i'm prepaired for the unknown,
what i allready do is holding a big space between me and the car in front, you just dont know...

Scary. Last year when I was driving from CA to UT for graduation I saw something in the highway divider that I thought was one of those advertising things they blow air into that flail their arms around. Thought to myself, that's a weird place to put something like that. About half a second later I realized it was a truck tire bouncing through the median from the opposite lane heading right at me. Went behind me by less than a car length. Checked the mirror and saw people behind me slamming on breaks. Luckily it managed to miss everyone.

coulda warned us, I gotta go change my shorts! :o

Wow!!!

One of those big wooden highway barriers flew off of a utility truck right in front of me a few months ago. I was in a minivan with the whole family on board, so it would have been a mess if I'd hit it. The barrier just hopped off the truck (state-owned road maintenance truck, barrier was not tied down), landed upright on it's legs, and slid down the fast lane right in front of me. Had to make a snap decision to either take my car into the median (sloped grass, good chance to roll the car or hit another off-road barrier), continue straight ahead and hope the barrier slid out of the way before I got there, or make a quick lane change and hope nobody had snuck up on me while I was in the fast lane passing the slow semi, and was now in my blind spot. I elected to change lanes on the theory that any jerk passing me on the right before I had a chance to change lanes after I had passed a semi was just asking to get rammed, and I got lucky. The barrier continued sliding in the fast lane and I missed it by about a foot. After passing the barrier I looked in the mirrors and saw chaos behind me, as people who weren't looking ahead started weaving all over the place avoiding the now stationary barrier in the fast lane.

Vid also sort of reminded me of a trip I made a long time ago... I was driving an old station wagon towing a u-haul (and not blocking traffic!), and I even had a long following distance from the guy ahead of me. He was driving some sort of jeep, and suddenly just twitched the wheel a bit, and drove right over what looked like a microwave or toaster oven laying in the middle of the road. I had only a couple of seconds to think about it, and since I was towing a fairly heavy load and the car was at max weights, I figured I didn't have time to switch lanes, plus I was in fairly heavy traffic and didn't have time to clear left or right to do a safe lane change. I tried to remember which side of the car the gas tank was on, and leaned the car the other way a bit. My front end cleared the object, but...
I guessed wrong. The rear axle cleared the object but the gas tank was just a tad lower on that side due to the vehicle load, and it ripped a huge hole in the bottom of my gas tank. If I'd leaned the other way, my car would have cleared it ok and trailer would have hit the object and probably survived since it was one of those overbuilt u-haul ones. As it was, I dumped a full tank of gas on the freeway (no fireball that I could see, too bad since it would have been spectacular) and had just enough fuel in the fuel line to make it to the shoulder before the engine quit.
Of course it was a Friday evening at around 6pm, so all the shops were going to be closed... AAA to the rescue! They found a tow driver who happened to be a part owner in a little family owned shop. He spent Friday evening calling all the wrecking yards in town, and found a compatible tank, and then put it on my car himself Sat morning. Total cost for the tank and quick installation, including a $40 tip, was $250. The tow was free courtesy of AAA membership. Nice guy, saved me from a long and painful weekend.

i was not ready for that :bolt:
