Think it's impossible to hate the Beatles
sorry, never have, never will.
-
So, why have I been jamming to them tonight?
Because it's an influence that sits in the room like an 800-lb gorilla.
Better question: which of them was the most significant contributor? If you believe the VH-1 survey, the pop-music "community" has already weighed in on this one. George Martin, for his part, would only acknowledge methodological differences.

Think it's impossible to hate the Beatles
It's not....

You can argue whether it was for the better or not, but the Beatles were the point of the sword that changed the western world in the 60's.
(Ah the 60's. Without flashbacks I'd have no memories at all)

can anybody who ever listened to the beatles actually picture themselves in a boat on a river, tangerine trees and marmalade skies?

Nothing beats the Beatles. Like one wise pop star once said, - it was unfair towards other groups that those individuals ended up in the same group.

It's not impossible to hate the Beatles. I never liked their Music. To bubblegum for my tastes.
I don't hate them.....just think their music sux. When they started they were more fad then substance.
Long bangs and pointed short boot shoes.
I wanna hold your handdddddddddd!
She luvs ya ya ya yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Classics....ya, bubble gum classics. They just beat The Archies but an eyelash.

The Who ftw

Incredible music from an incredible time.
-
One of my favorite bands. :aok
I love it all from the beginning to the end and all the solo stuff in the 70s, 80s.
I used to not like the early stuff (Pre-Revolver) now I like it more than I ever did.
-
I like the Beatles a lot, but to me....Pink Floyd is perfection.
-
yup i love "see Emily play" by pink floyd . Have to say the KInks were much better than the Beatles.

Being Welsh you probably enjoy one of my favorites as well, Badfinger.
The Kinks are another of my fave, especially Muswell Hillbillies.

The Kinks influenced a ton of bands as well messy. I could post a few things and make a solid case supporting his statement.

I'm not arguing that they didn't.
However, I doubt that anyone can prove that anyone had more influence on modern music (in every aspect of the business from songwriting to recording studio innovations) than the Beatles have.
They are not even my favorite band.
It's a toss-up between Zeppelin and Floyd, FTW :rock

Led Zeppelin has influenced way more then the friggin beatles.....I really can not stand the beatles they are an insult to good music.
the beatles were a horrible band, lame bellybutton music for the pop culture. they were "trained" by the studio so parents would like them also :aok (something most people don't know and wont believe)
Zeppelin-floyd-not even close bro....Zeppelin is... was...will always be the greatest rock and roll band ever. :aok
three most over rated bands of all time
the beatles
ac/dc
aerosmith
some of the worst bands that people think are great
stones
kiss
motorhead
greatfull dead

Motorhead I would classify more as a one-hit-wonder that was lucky to of had more than just one hit in their career. I like the beatles though, but don't think they're the best and I know they were trained and groomed by their handlers, but I think that in itself contributes heavily to their legacy and that as people continue today to dig behind the curtain and more into who the individuals were behind the scenes it reveals a jackpot of wealth they weren't privy to before.

motorhead had a hit :headscratch:
seriously one of the worst bands ever I cannot even fathom someone would sign them :headscratch:
at least Aerosmith had 1 good Album....they remind me of godsmack/disturbed.....one good first Album every thing after that absolute trash

music is music. you either like a song, or a band, or genre of music, or you dont. That pretty much sums up this thread. Arguing about this or that, when it comes to art, is like pissing into the wind.

I should have been more specific.
When I think of the Beatles as being an influential band, I speak more of their later years (post discovery of drugs), as opposed to, their "pop" years.
In many ways they blazed a path for a lot of other bands to follow. I also consider their "techie" cadre as part of that (mostly George Martin)
In a lot of ways, they made it easier for the acts that followed them to do what they did. I call it a case of "right place, right time". It could have been any number of bands, but it happened to be them.
I personally, can't deny the fact that some of their songwriting was groundbreaking (for the time, of course)
Again, they are not my favorite band, but to deny their influence on pop-culture and rock n roll in general, would be as silly as saying that they are the greatest band in the world. Something which the Stones (in my opinion) are certainly not.
I would also agree that AC/DC is a bit overrated, but I have to give them some respect. As a drummer, I would kill to have a rhythm guitarist with the timing of Malcolm Young. The man is a freaking machine.
Aerosmith, I can take them or leave them. I like their early stuff.
I'm not a member of the KISS army. There is something to be said about their theatricality, but not necessarily their musical prowess. Something I would pay to see live, but not buy the albums.
Motorhead never did it for me.
The Dead on the other hand, are probably the most mis-understood band. I would not claim to be a Deadhead, but I have a deep respect for their collective musical abilities and their penchant for playing what is essentially, American folk music, for the most part.
To put an even finer pinpoint on it. Most bands, including the Beatles and everything afterwards were influenced by and owe some homage to early American blues musicians.
-

You've got to dig deeper sometimes, though.
Not liking any particular music or band or song, does not necessarily mean that it cannot be appreciated.
-
I was never a big Beatles fan until we tried doing a tribute band last year. We played out a few times, but people wanted more variety than just Beatles. Was alot of fun learning the songs. Of course the harmonies were the toughest, but most fun. Nowhere man and Eight days a week among them.
-

yes but there is "good music" and "great music" and straight up bad music.
most of today's music would fall into the last category, most of the 50's 60's 70's would fall into the first two categories.
but there is only one top dog....best of the best.....and Led Zeppelin is their name :aok
ya im a "bit" opinionated :old:
the dead were so bad they had to give out acid so people could "understand' them :P

And to think, we almost got saddled with these guys...

Motorhead= Awesome
Aerosmith= Massive suck
Kiss= Phony balony kiddie rock
Greatful Dead= One of my faves. Especially during the old "chemical days" as I call it. :lol

The case for the Beatles being influential: when Decca turned them down it was because guitar bands were on the way out.

kind of amazing when ever anyone gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame they thank
Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
The Beatles
The Kinks
I think I will go with what the real professionals and stars of rock & roll consider - not some want to be rock stars who may have played at the local county fair which is what the majority of the musicians on here are....

2 singers singing lead vocals together

If it wasn't for the blues none of these bands would exist, especially zepplin.
Sorry. I spoke too soon...and amen on the dead. I don't like most of the gratefull dead's stuff, but Jerry was an awesome banjo picker. Old and In the Way is just awesome. Oh and ACDC is as bad as music can get.

i think Fleetwood mac (the early years) were far more out there pushing boundaries than the Beatles. better guttering too. To me the greatest guitar players are
1) BB king
2) muddy waters
3) David Gilmore
4) Eric "slow hand" Clapton

Muddy was an awesome singer but guitar? I think Hendrix and SRV could run circles around him. Fleetwood Mac pushed the boundries enough for Jimmy Page to rip em off. Whole Lotta Love= Oh Well

someone got there info a bit wrong.
first off, ALL music is ripped off, used, borrowed, the blues and those that did the blues are notorious for this, and then to go and sue Zepp for using a few words from some old blues song that no one ever heard of, please.....classic case of envy.
Led Zeppelin took small bits of what some did and did it better...A LOT better, certainly was not Fleetwood mac though.
and anyone who knows anything about music...should know that Jimmy Page was a HIGHLY sought after session guitarist, that played on quit a few albums of artists being mentioned here. (before fleetwood mac was even a band)
Love Hendrix....if there was one guy out there that was original it was him, and even HE did music from others.... I would say Yngwie Malmsteen would smoke Hendrix and SRV...then again Steve Vai...would probably also.

The the beachboys did Pet sounds.... :O
Those 2 albums changed music as we know it,multi tracking, run tape backwards,sampleing...didnt know they were doing that but they did!
Then several years later some group did an album about the Darkside and again the world went.... :O
This is not to say Zepplin isnt in the class of these guys because Zep IV certainly made most go.... :O
IMHO Alice Bowie is the greatest!!!!! :O

im old now a days and cant remember all the records they broke, but I know they are the most requested band ever.
they broke ALL the beatles records for attendance.
A lot of people who hate Zeppelin-pure case of envy, because they are so popular now and for the last 40 years...even though they haven't put out a Album in...what 1980......When they were together they were the most dissed band in America by the critics, they hated on Zepp bad....they were banned from many a city. ( this was mostly due to the riots that accompanied their concerts)
many many musicians state Zeppelin as their influences....Ive been around, I am not some regular dood, Ive tattooed probably over 50,000 people, maybe double that
I have met many a band member and so many of them list Zepp as the best....
every band today owes Led Zeppelin.....EVERYONE in the music business owes them..why?....you ask....before Zeppelin the Arena and record companies took most of the money made by the band playing there. it was Peter Grant, Zeppelin's manager that changed all that, he forced them to give more money to the bands and then when the record companies didn't wanna play ball he went and made his own record company.
I don't know, whatever, I do know that I personally absolutely love Zeppelin, they do not have one bad song, NOT one....I can listen to them every day and never get tired of hearing them.
-
I'm not disagreeing with you Ink,I think Zep is 1 of the greatest. My point was more on how music changed at least as far as the whole albums concept after Magical and petsound, before that it was singles and if you had a catalog of songs you could do a album.
Both these records used by those days standards the latest technology and were highly experimental. George Martin should be included here even though he wasnt in a "band",he certainly was 1 of the greatest recording engineers of all time.
I think his running of Ringo's cymbal backwards is still a foundation of most of todays music.

Sorry, my mistake. It was Black Dog not Whole Lotta Love. I should know the names of these overplayed songs by now. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make about Jimmy Page being a highly sought after session guitarist. Jimmy Page played with the Yardbirds, Peter Green played with the Bluesbreakers, and Clapton played in both. BFD.The simple fact is Oh Well was released two years before Black Dog. All this talk of "envy" is just ridiculous being that it was the "envy" of the blues musicians that inspired most of these guys to pick up an instrument in the first place. At least we can agree that Hendrix was awesome. Yes there are many technically better guitarists out there, but who wants to listen to those guys wank? Anyway, we all know who's really the most epic guitarist of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBiJ-K0IpDA

"Ripped off" was a bit of a stretch. I should have said "inspired" like Page supposedly said he was by the song. Though I can hear a slight similarity in the riff, it was mainly the start/stop of the song. If you want to hear a great example of a zep rip off, listen to this song that cattb just reminded me of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM8_HuQ0b34
BTW I'm not saying these guys are wrong for stealing ideas from other people. Everyone does it. All I am saying is give credit where credit is due. And that credit can work both ways. For example, Dylan and Hendrix with All Along the Watchtower: (Dylan has described his reaction to hearing Hendrix's version: "It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."[25] In the booklet accompanying his Biograph album, Dylan said: "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way.")

There are MANY "Filler tunes" on Zeppelin albums. Every band has em, that is why they are called it. Even Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who The Beatles, Stones, every band has em, including Zeppelin.
Understand that The Who (and yes, even Elton John) had been at "larger arenas" prior to Zeppelin (who didn't hit the arenas until Physical Graffiti). Peter Grant (not Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac :devil) was a borderline felon as well, but yes he "changed the way gate receipts were handled". I have always liked Zeppelin, but the older I get, the less I listen to them. I have their catalog, but what vexes me on how a songwriter can REGULARLY forget his own lyrics and he did it OFTEN (Peep Misty Mountain hop and The Ocean from The Song Remains The Same for starters). Simply put, I've talked to many folks who saw them live and they concur "They were a better studio band, than Live. Live they were drunk, stoned and sometimes horrible to listen too." This from the mouths of people who saw them live, not my opinion.
On to The Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour. The Beatles are a whole different element. For starters, Pet Sounds was released and it lit a fire under The Beatles. McCartney to this day calls "God Only Knows "the greatest song ever penned" and he's right. So the Sgt. Pepper comes out and this album changed the rules as well. They were getting ripped off by Alex the Whiz Kid on a "32 track studio that never went past 8". Paul McCartney threatened to "leave EMI because the quality of the initial cardboard sleeve of the album was too thin". He made them spend more money up front, "so the cardboard would last". Also understand that without the Beatles at that time playing to 60,000+ in the baseball stadiums, you wouldn't have had the "higher wattage guitar amps"in production as fast. The Beatles even made bets on "How fast we can do a show since all they want to do was scream". Per John in an interview "it was just a shade over 16 minutes". But the fans didn't care.
After Sgt Pepper was released, Brian Epstein died and from the time they broke up in 1970, you had a rudderless ship. Brian had somehow managed to quell every ego in the band and "always seem to make it work". This dynamic was gone and you had Lennon singing "I'm Crying" in "I Am the Walrus", which was in direct reference to Epstein's passing. The Apple Boutique failed, their label barely stayed afloat and by 1971 had become a travesty.
Now back to Zeppelin. Zeppelin has just completed being sued over Dazed and Confused in June 2010.....they lost. NOW the credits will give proper credit, where it is due. As for the "blues artists that no one ever heard" comment. Zeppelin ripped them off, point blank and it is factually agreed within the music community. Willie Dixon is one of my favorites to listen to outside of Leadbelly and all they had to do was "ask". They rolled the dice and lost. Which Peter Grant admitted in later interviews that he "thought about doing what was right, instead of what we did". I have the DVD and have in turn made no less than 20 friends and family members BUY IT. It IS good and it pisses me off that they sat on this stuff for as long as they did. The fans deserved this being released even the live material on CD, Cassette, or even Vinyl. The fans would have given them more money.
I just got back from the Stone Temple Pilots concert, I am now tired and my PBR is finished. Good night gentlemen. :rock

The Apple Boutique failed, their label barely stayed afloat and by 1971 had become a travesty.

they did nothing that other artists haven't been always doing....period. they changed every thing they used or borrowed and made it there own.
as far as Led Zeppelin being a studio band only.....well You could not be further from the truth sorry major FAIL...Led Zeppelin has been called the greatest live rock band by to many people to have sucked, I also know people that have seen them live....I started listening to them in 1979,
that is so laughable wow.....besides the fact ive had at least 40 live albums and tapes/CD's to 8tracks. watched countless videos of them....
They were great live.

As for my Felon comment it was true. He had the "hoax robbery after the MSG gig"..........you draw your own conclusion.
I'm not envious, I've read a few books and left out other things, but why bother? "FAIL"? Are we adults here, or are some of you kids sitting around the breakfast table? Don't know how I lost you, as you called Peter Grant.........Peter Green more than once. :huh
I may be 37 ink, but I assure you that I've been listening to them since about 4 years old and it's far from envy. I have the bootlegs, seen a lot of the videos as well, some things are just fact. The older I get, the more I'd rather listen to Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and the influential artists "that get ignored".

When Bonham died, I cried and cried and cried some more. I was 6. I was waiting in line with my mom for tickets at Sears of all places. It was supposed to be my first concert :furious
I still cry about it.
Ink, if you ever get near these parts, you have GOT to see these guys...
You can also contact them to play in your area. If there is enough interest to fill a hall, they will do it.

About 4 feet in front of Plant & Page - you will glimpse some Andy Frain hats - about 15 guys placed between the stage and a plywood wall that was literally the stupidest thing I have ever seen. The plywood wall, once all of the people in the stadium pressed forward, began to collapse and press into the poor Andy frain ushers - of which my brother and myself were in the midst of... we were on the "goon" squad - larger guys who usually worked stage front and dressing room door areas at most of the concerts around chicago in those days. We all had our backs propped on the stage, our feet pressed against the plywood wall pushing back and swinging our 8 inch lead weighted flashlights at the ijots trying to climb up on stage. Spent most of the night passing -passed out- girls over our heads to the stagehands so they could be sent to the side for ambulance rides...
I worked a lot of concerts at the Stadium, The Stockyards, the Auditorium, and most of the sporting events - just one day figured I would rather get paid to attend this stuff then to pay to attend them... no regrets on that - saw a lot of cool stuff that I never would have seen had I not had that job

Hasta la Vista. For the record you typed peter green no less than three times.
Edit. For the record. Zeppelin didn't give proper credit. Again their own manager admitted they screwed it up.
Envy of what? Sorry to burst the bubble.

I'll continue to listen to em when the mood hits me. I like variety in music, even I get tired of listening to Pink Floyd. But this playground fascination with "envy" is disturbing.

All good, but it was for naught. To speak your mind about zeppelin only makes you envious. :rofl
I wish I could have been there as well. They are the most influential band ever, The Beatles that is.

This actually makes sense to me... chasing down the blues roots is a logical path. Screamin' Jay, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, even people like Mingus... etc. Hell, most people don't know who Kansas Joe McCoy is - but they've heard at least one of his songs. Many don't realize that Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a blues song (albeit a very slickly produced, very good one - and I'm no music student so correct me if it isn't technically the blues - it sure sounds like it).
That's SOME of what I listen to driving down Scio Church Road. Kenny G. need not apply.
