Title: GV Speed
Post by: MachFly on April 25, 2011, 09:03:28 PM
I don't mind not being able to sit in the driver's position, but I would really like to know what my speed is when driving a tank.

Why would you not want to know your speed?

Why would you not want to know your speed?

I think the question really should be.. Why would you not want to wear a speedo
while driving a tank?

yeah, but say yer new to the game, and just wanna test tanks to figure out which is fastest.. currently no way to check other than ask or race someone :)

even activating the e6b would suffice just to show speed would work, IMO

I can understand the wish, it makes perfect sense.  Just ask any real life tanker, the commander would ask for specific speeds in most cases, not "full speed ahead" or "full stop".

I like the idea of a speedometer in the upper left corner of the screen while in the tank commanders view.

i don't mean to be an arse, but you do know that shift-w means hold down shift then hit w. not the other way around?

don't remember ever being asked about speed unless we were testing...otherwise the tc gave speeds with words like "slow", "slower", "slowly", "easy", "faster", "move", "haul ass", "stop", "hold it", "backup" and some form of left or right with a clock position.

none the less, a small speed indicator in an out of the way spot wouldn't be a bad thing...

"M1C1" of Duxford Wing RAF, is a vet of Gulf War I and of Iraqi Freedom serving in all roles while in a M1A1 Abrams.  He mentioned in terms of speed, the TC would typically call for "stop, quarter, half, 3/4, or full" (same for reverse), or a specified speedvalue (20mph).  For directional, the clock position was typical as you mentioned.

Each TC was a bit different, he/she would cater to the skill level and experience of the crew.

i had the m60a3 combat tank...speedo was basically useless off road...transmission was basically automatic, you could change gears while stopped...had very big touchy gas pedal...you had to be careful about how much pressure you put on it from a dead stop.

Enabling it, the speed value, in the E6B might be the answer, for testing etc.

E6B is disabled for GVs.

I would like to see a gear indicator on screen more than a speedometer.  Last night I was climbing hills and had the usual auto transmission prob of it shifting up only to find that it could not maintain speed in that gear and slow down, shift into lower gear and repeat..

I found the best thing to do was wait till it hit the gear right before what ever high one and stop there but I had to listen for it which was hard some times with radio chatter and gun fire going on around me.

So I would like a gear indicator so I can see what it shifted to on a hill and know better when to stop trying to accelerate. :)
