Title: Stupid tank optics...
Post by: Melvin on April 29, 2011, 04:10:22 AM
Here's a blast from the past.

Sorry about the violation, just thought we needed a refresher.

I only posted it because I was searching for German tank optics on the web and stumbled across this gem.

Given all the current changes it gave me a chuckle and I figured some others may get a kick out of it.

Heck, at nearly 11 years I'd say it's out of necro-bump status and more along the lines of "history lesson".  :lol

Have a great day!  :salute

Speaking of history of tank optics in AH:

View of a Tiger at ~850 yards through a Panzer IV gunsight before the change:

And that is how a Tiger at about the same range does appear now in a Panzer IV gunsight:

Not really upset with the realistic optics as far as zoom level and field of view.  I do have an issue with the optics on the US vehicles.  They go from moderately white-cloudy (m476) to the virtually unusable almost fully clouded optics like the (m375).  If this is what the WWII tankers had to deal with, I am glad I was a grunt and the view over my M16 sight was at least clear.  Those guys had a lot to contend with.  You have to admit trying to find a semi-hidden M4 with the cloudy sights is a challenge, they are almost invisible. Don't even ask me what I think of trying to de-ack with these sights, ack positions may as well have Harry Potters cloak over it.  So, I jokingly ask for a function key that will simulate a spritz of windex on the sights.

+1......

being an avid gv'er i can understand the different gun sight magnifications in different gv's,but having sights that are nearly clouded over is very disapointing as i was looking forward to this new update. Also i don't like not even being given the option to map the movement of my gv to my joystick. As it stands now i will be going from most of my time in a gv to hardly ever and possibly account deletion  :( :(

The M3 sight is the only one that is clouded enough to bug me.  It's still fun though, I even managed to get a Shegotya kill the other day but had to run when she started bouncing shells off of my hood lol. :P

If you learn it instead of crying, imagine what would happen. I hate change, myself, but it is necessary sometimes. Just learn and adapt and go on with the game.

It still sucks.

I suppose you'd rather have every tank drive the same, gun the same, BE the same other than the name on it?  Perhaps you'd also like to have every plane fly the same, with the same gunsight and ammo?

The way it is now with the new optics, actually makes GV choice MEAN something.  If you feel the need to cry about it being a little more difficult, then perhaps this game is not for you.

i'm betting the sucking is only happening on your end...nothing wrong with the new system or the optics.

Nailed a T-34 from 3k earlier this evening with a T-34-85.  I dont see the problem.

Actually, I would have to agree there is something wrong with the M3 halftrack with the 75mm howitzer.  I get the impression that the "frosted glass" texture was applied twice to that gunsight for some reason.  It doesn't look right to me.

The rest of it is fine.  That is how those tanks actually worked.

I still think there needs to be other changes, but not to the tanks themselves.  They seem pretty good now.  I like the idea of a virtual battlefield, but we're not there yet.  The ground game is still a side show.

I like it in general but think there is a mistake with the Firefly and perhaps the Tiger and Panther. It seemed to me the commander of these 3 does not have as good a binoclulars as the the other tank commanders. These 3 tanks have significantly better sights which is not strange given they have the best guns but I wouldn't have thought they would be given inferior binnoculars as a consequence.

I am all for the maximum playable reality in these things  :aok

All tanks have the same magnification in the commander position.

What may be confusing is the size of the virtual reticle - that is indeed differing, but the magnification levels are the same.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes and thanks  :o

So de acking is harder and shooting planes on the runway you need to be nearer but air kills with the main gun are allot easier  :aok

The high Perk tanks are earning their perks more now and are able to aim further out where their guns have the distinct advantage.

I would like the tank to be able to be driven from pedals and twissty stick like last time. I saw in some tank TV programme T34 commanders given the poor or lack of soviet intercoms used their feet to communicate with the driver  :lol

ive been trying to work out what going on with that too, some sights fill the screen, others are really quite small. :headscratch:

edit: hmmm I misunderstood the reticule size comment, I now understand that you meant the reticule displayed in commander's position. does it match the FOV of the gunsight view?

still dont understand the screenies above though :headscratch:

love the new optics. keep wondering if the m3 was really that hard to see from though. i just want mappable z axis for steering :pray

Just so we understand each other, I posted this with the name "Stupid tank optics..." as a lark.

I actually enjoy the new system.

Now it looks as if we could have a good discussion here regarding their usefulness.

Yes. The size of the white circle does exactly match the gunsight's FOV at highest magnification.

Different optics with different FOV's being used in the different vehicles?

that explains the FOV in the virtual image, but not the size of the virtual image ...

eg. take an SLR with zoom lens, when you zoom, the FOV (magnification) changes, the size of the virtual image doesnt.

just goto clipboard, click controles, then map them to gv's (copy) and stick will steer and move turret.

Zoom/power and FOV do not exactly make sense when translated to a computer screen because moving your head closer and farther away changes zoom.

When dealing with a computer screen you really only have a field of view because lowering the field of view effectively zooms in.

Hence we choose the best zoom/fov ratio and use that as a base to have a circle touch the top and bottom of the screen.

After which sights will the same power will be the same size on the screen, but as the sights FOV decreases the circle will become smaller.

So the objects on the screen will be the same size for any 6 power sight. But the circle size will vary with the sights FOV.

I agree with the "frosted glass", but I've had the same problem, not quite as bad, with some A/C gunsight reflectors all along as well.

The F4U comes to mind immediately.
