There is nothing wrong with volunteering. If you want to learn the beginnings of being a LEO, then you are doing the right thing. The next step is probably a volunteer officer of some kind. I was a reserve deputy for over 7 years. I had all the same training, and all the same rights, privleges, and responsibilities of a sworn officer, but I was volunteer. I wore the same uniform (but had silver metal instead of gold), carries all the same gear (from 'cuffs to baton to radio to gun), and saw all the things you wish you didnt have to see (neglected/abuse/dead children, etc). Eventually, enough of the networking gets done and you get a job offer somewhere is you do well enough. I worked 6 mos as a part time PD officer in a small town and wrote 100's of speeding tickets, and busted a few pot heads (not really, I just destroyed their weed and made them cry). Eventually, I realized that I did not want to do that full time and gave up the employment part.
You are doing the right thing if you want to learn what it is to be an LEO. Watch for further opportunities to come your way.

I heard even the Secret Service recently came to your house to recruit you......... :noid

Thanks for the support, and I guess I sorta felt it was my duty to help out cause of all the vandalism, and it heats up in the summer. I just figured I wanted to be more out there, I mean i'm joining all the police career's on top of joining the rifle team at my school. My main goal is to possibly pilot the police helicopter or medivac. But if I get offered a higher ranking job then I guess I wouldn't have many options. And i'm very well aware of what i'm going to see and experience. I've been doing alot of interviews with different law enforcement officers.

Out of all the places where you can volunteer why do it at a police department? :D anyways...
What exactly will you be doing? Is it if you see an accident or a fight your supposed to call 911?

Why on earth is everyone so cynical here?? :headscratch:
There are a million things the kid could be doing that are worse then police summer camp or whatever. At the very least it keeps him out of trouble for a few weeks, and just maybe he will discover a passion, and it turns into the first step towards achieving a fulfilling career.
I thought we (responsible adults) where supposed to encourage kids to do productive and educational stuff like this, not mock and humiliate them. Would you all rather he sat at home playing Xbox, or "hanging out" (AKA wasting time) at the mall or Wal-Mart instead of doing summer camp and police ride-alongs??

Thank you for supporting my cause, I don't want to be one of those teens who are addicted to their xbox's and PS3's. I like to get out there and be fit. Plus law enforcement is what I want to do in life.

Being a LEO is a tough career choice. My advice to you is stick with your education. Not just in criminal justice either. Think outside the box. My degree is in English and a few of my friends have degrees in business management. I can't express this enough.....STAY IN SCHOOL!
Becoming involved with a summer program will give you an idea on what the job will be like, but there is a lot more you won't see.
Being a cop is a thankless job (as you can tell by some of the responses). Working weekends and holidays, 24/7. You will see stuff that will turn you numb to people.
Keep an open mind and do your best. Don't get discouraged and never tell anyone that you can't do the job. An education will help you deal with what's to come.
Best of luck to you.
-
You should join the secret service instead. You already have an advantage of the other apps...they know you personally
-
I thought you wanted to fly an F-22? Or so your name suggests.
No I just support the F22 program. Also in order to do anything like that(flying) I would have to get corrective laser eye surgery, and i gave a firm hell freaking NO :furious

As long as it's correctable to 20/20 you'll be fine (at least for the Air Force). But the near vision has to be perfect.

I've actually been suggested that many times, i'm considering it. Plus I hear that you can go where ever you want and they will support you where your stationed? :headscratch: I mean its tempting but I'd like to have all the facts.

I think you misunderstood what I said, by correctable to 20/20 I mean with glasses. So if you can see 20/20 with glasses you'll be fine.

But you can't fly jets with glasses? The G's would suck them off your face? and if that happened and you can't see your pretty much screwed right? :headscratch:

I pulled up to 5Gs with sunglasses, worked out just fine. Glasses are not that heavy to significantly increase their weight with Gs. Now I realize with fighter you'll be pulling a lot more and I'm not sure what exactly they do, but they do let you wear the corrective lenses somehow.

I've heard different stories about this actually, but it seems like the main concern is if something happens like it comes out or off in a glasses case, a pilot couldn't see, or if one contacts lenses fell out you would loose your depth perception? I mean I believe you, but I can see people's concerns.

It depends on the quality of the glasses, if you buy something for $5 than yeah it probably would not work out but if you go for $300+ you should be fine.

"What types of crimes does the Secret Service investigate?
The Secret Service has primary jurisdiction to investigate threats against Secret Service protectees as well as financial crimes, which include counterfeiting of U.S. currency or other U.S. Government obligations; forgery or theft of U.S. Treasury checks, bonds or other securities; credit card fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud, identify fraud and certain other crimes affecting federally insured financial institutions."

Compulsive Liar
---------------
A compulsive liar is defined as someone who lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative and cunning (unlike sociopaths), rather they simply lie out of habit - an automatic response which is hard to break and one that takes its toll on a relationship.
Compulsive Lying Symptoms
---------------------------
It is not easy to spot compulsive liar symptoms, as the lies are many times too subtle to catch ones eye or these compulsive liars are very skillful in presenting their lies. Compulsive liar symptoms become apparent mostly to the near and dear ones of the compulsive liar. Things begin to open up when close ones can easily spot the lies from the truth. The compulsive liar symptoms are as follows:
Attention Seekers: There are certain people who need to be the center of attraction where ever they go. In order to maintain their high popularity rate, they begin to build up attention seeking white lies. These lies soon become a part of their personalities and they never find it necessary to shrug off the harmless lies.
Create Stories: Creating stories of valor and great deeds about oneself all the time, is a compulsive liar symptom. They make up such great stories about themselves, that they loose their charm once the cat is out of the bag. For example, someone claims to have fought a bloody fight with a goon at the local bar, when actually he is known to get scared or has even fainted at the sight of blood.

So you can pilot a police helicopter without corrective vision surgery but you can't fly an f-22... I smell something... You may have overlooked some requirements for being a chopper pilot.

You're young, so it's a bit early for them to subject you to a phsyc test. But doing these camps and youth programs will help mature you and grow you up some to better handle that stuff when it comes time, you'll be a much much better position than a recruit that graduated High School but hasn't been through any of these programs that you will of gone through.
It's a good career choice if you're happy and content with the work, pluss you'll spend you're summer having some fun out somewhere and also feel productive about advancing skills you can use for your future. It is a thankless job though, don't expect unanamouse praise and respect for your decision, many people simply don't have the mental, physical or bullock strength to serve the public thanklessly while under constant scrutiny. Law enforcement is a kinda tough job, 70% of people support you, 70% of people don't trust you, and then there's the real loons that want to take pot shots at you while you're sitting at a school making sure nobody runs over the kids. Just remember, it's a position of authority, it both comes with some respect and authority but also a ton of scrutiny and accountability.
Getting on the early track will help fast-track you into a job when you graduate school, and it'll also be an incentive to do well and graduate on schedule in school, something most people lack until they're already done and graduated. These program's purpose and intent is to take young people like you who are far from perfect, but with honest good intent in them. They mold you by giving you the the skills and resourcess needed for viable and prepared recruits to join the police force.
They'll keep you busy too before you're of proper age to serve, if you get proactive with them and they like you, there's usually always some event going on every weekend in the summer that they need a cadet to help with, even if it's just managing traffic. It'll keep you out of trouble, probabley get you into a few venues for a few hours for free, and make connections with those already on the force and working in it.
-
many people simply don't have the mental, physical or bullock strength to serve the public
And yet, so many of them go into that profession
thanklessly while under constant scrutiny.
Thanklessly? What do you call your paycheck? With your definition I have thanklessly been serving several companies for over 20 years. And no one ever told me thank you :(
-
Let's just lock this one down right now, Skuzzy.
Why? First, Raptordude appears to be total flakbait, probably due to past cash-poor transactions here in the marketplace of thought. Second, nobody here appears to still retain enough respect/fear to be shy about sharing their feelings with respect to the quality of those past transactions. Third, the thread has also become hijack bait, probably because people want a meal, not a snack, and the topic is the thinnest of thin gruel.
Sometimes, when that horse is on the ground bleeding from all orifices and obviously in agony, it's best just to take the double-barrel from the rack and disconnect the damn thing's brain.

I saw some light cause you wouldn't pull many G's in a helicopter right? and planes and helicopters are different in that sense directly? Well i'm in my neighborhood watch program as I said originally, So I feel as part of a team to my neighborhood cause we have 30 members. But this is just the beginning, prior that day I got called into my school resource officers room and he said he was informed from my parents that I was interested in law enforcement so he gave me the information and sign ups for camp are next week so i'll be going to sign up for that. He also recommended the explorer program the school offers to students. You get a uniform, the gear, and the responsibility, as well as competing with other schools and getting training in team work(which I vitally need). Also that day a dog got loose and my sister wanted me to walk her over to her friends house, and apparently the dog had been giving problems before with getting out and attacking people. 911 was called and animal control and a Officer in the area showed up looking for the home owners and trying to capture the dog which had gone back under the fence(They have a patrol going now when the buses arive to drop off students cause that was when the dog came out most often I guess). I interviewed the officer before he left asking age requirements and recommended action for joining. He recommended police service and training before you enter the force, so I guess thats my plan of action. But to be honest I want to do all I can to take on life after high school so I figured I was taking the right step?
last I knew the police were civil servants.....respect...lol... .no cop gets respect just because he is a cop, from me.
Ive met a few good cops....a very few. most are power hungry scum who think they are better then the "civs".
It is unfortunate, but it happens a heck of alot more then it should. But Its the human condition, as long as there are two people on the planet one will try to be better than the other, its how it works. but back to what you said, i've seen a fair share of dash cam abuse video's on google and on you tube. Not saying you tube is always right but it does have some seemingly brutal stuff.
Here's a video I found a few months ago, and i'm curious to see if the correct action was taken so if any of you can give an opinion on what should have been done? would really help out cause i'm confused. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD1eOEItcmg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD1eOEItcmg)

Hey F22, I'm Penguin, and I'm a certified wimp- look, it's even stamped on my backside. I thought that surgery would be awful too, but when I had my deviated septum fixed, it didn't hurt at all thanks to the anaesthesia. There's nothing to fear (except death, but we can assume that you don't fear death since you wish to join the Air Force). Furthermore, find something you like and pursue it, no matter what the cost. Nothing is worth a life full of 'what ifs'.
Not to hijack, but if you really want to get into the history books, join NASA (it's where I plan on going). You get decent pay (60,000-100,000 annual salary) with good benefits, and there's an intangible sense of working toward something greater than profit margins.

I had a Deviated Septum last summer after I smashed my nose. They SUCK!

I mean I want to just do medivac or fly the police chopper in Gwinnett county, that was my main motive do to before I retire, or before that do commercial air travel. But you know if you want to join NASA you have my full support mate. :aok and thanks for the support.

You MUST be young. Don't worry, if you're at all adventurous or athletic, you'll get lots of chances to experience some real pain. Anesthesia will only go so far - the rest you get to feel. Enjoy it - it's really not that bad and experience enough of it and you'll lose that wimp stamp.
Second, you're entirely right about what ifs. Most of my memories from my teens, 20's, and 30's are real grins - so long as I'm thinking about times I hung it out there. Thinking about something that I didn't do is usually a frowner. A wise man once said that hell is full of all the girls you could've flicked but didn't. The statement can be applied more generally.
As for NASA, I started my career there (after grad school) in Wind Tunnel Test at Ames. I don't recommend civil service if you're ambitious or talented but it's very secure if you're not. At the same time, it's a decent resume tick and if it doesn't suit you you can move on. As far as something "greater than" I think you're mildly delusional to think that a bureaucrat's political priorities (most of what Nasa does is bent toward politics, imj) are somehow better or more honest than the attempt to create real products that real people find useful enough to be willing to pay real money - but that's just me. Like I say, experiment for yourself.

I don't anyway, but you provide a very good point. But when I get home from school I usually go out on my bike. I use my phone to comment, and trust me it isn't easy. But I like to spend most of my day riding around my town when i'm not at school, but i'm not addicted to my phone either before you say. :lol

What I meant was officers who abuse power, its not justifiable, I stand up for myself but I don't take abuse.

By 'join NASA', I meant 'to join those who boldly go'. I want to become an astronaut. Yes, it sounds childish but others have done it; if I can't, then that's one fewer 'what if' to worry about. It's not for those without talent (a PhD isn't something to take lightly). I love science, space, and engineering. I just don't know if I can compete with the other candidates (who seem to be superbeings).
I don't understand your point about politics though, would you please explain? :headscratch: However, the 'greater than myself' thing was probably a result of watching the ISS live feed for too long and not getting enough sleep. :lol Doh!

My long term goal is also to be an astronaut, good luck. I have been reconsidering that path however, due to SpaceX's accomplishments.

As long as a person is determined, nothing beyond physical and mental limitations can stop them...

I was nominated to the AFA by my congressman (Erlenborn, at the time) when I was a kid and was flatly told during the interview process that I could never be a fighter pilot due to flat feet, corrected vision (a big one), and allergies. Thus I pursued Aerospace Engineering and went to work at Ames doing research after grad school at Stanford. I knew some people who applied for that astronaut thing - I did not, reasoning that, if they wouldn't trust me to fly, what were the odds with a spacecraft? Of course, some of the specialists don't need to be physically uber - so that's a more likely path for you if you have any physical defects. Either way, push for what you want. You never know.
As for the politics, take a picture of this: Page 1 - CFCs cause the hole in the ozone layer, says Ames. Later, page 8 below the fold, "Ames retracts assertion." Get the pic? Most of the research programs in which I particpated were either military (the best ones) or for some Government dude with a pet project and a budget (largely worthless) - or were enviro/rehab projects we were forced to do by other regulatory agencies (mostly worthless).

Right, so the typical government bullpucky is also there. I'm not surprised by that, but going into space makes it all worth it. Think about it, actually getting off this rock and being in space!
By uber, do you mean muscular? I have between 20/20 and 20/30 distance vision and my near vision is perfect. My tendons and ligaments are weak as well. I have no problem with bulking up before I join, I just need to know now so that I have time.

Yeah, I'd recommend you do cardio and weight training. AFA had physical tests - none of which concerned me, especially. They were tough but not over the top.

Any specifics? I know that I can swim over 200 meters non-stop in swim-trunks (100 backstroke, 100 freestyle), along with 20 meters underwater, because it was a joining requirement for the boating school I went to last summer. Before my tendons took me out of track, I could run a six minute mile in the first mile of a five kilometer race and finish in 21 minutes. Is that enough?

When you say you can swim well. Made me think, i'ma horrible swimmer on the surface, so when I go to the pool I usually swim underwater most of the time. My pool is maybe 60 feet by 30 feet and I can swim from one side to the other, then kick off the wall and get half way to the other side before I need air? Would that be considered impressive or am I just full of myself? (and sorry for being off topic)

That's about 50% more than I can do, nicely done. I think that this is becoming us just flexing in front of a bunch of creeped out old guys. Let's stop, now.
