So,
I had a change to have trip to the NC and what kind a trip that was...
Lets start about the landscape.
It's a really beautiful there. A Lake Norman area... Wow! So green, clean & tidy. A heaven on earth. Okey, they have some really nasty spiders there so, watch out.
Traffic
No bad. I mean from a first timer drive POV in US. All good.
Views
Well, nicely rounded and in right places.
Food
Oh, boy... So good, it would blow-off a button off from my jeans, if I would stay there any longer.

Where to start?
They were so friendly. It feel so good to go out and say 'hi'/ 'howdy' / 'how are you?' and have small-talk.
I also had a extreme rare opportunity / honor to meet a group of very special people, while they had their annual tournament party.
I'm very thankful for that. I met a very nice people and had a very interesting conversation with them.
Thank you NC. I'll never forget this trip :)

That depends on which side of the piedmonts you are on. I don't really care for eastern NC BBQ.

Last time I was in NC all was well until I was sitting out behind the hotel by the pool enjoying a relaxing drink in the sun when 3 gigantic African American women in really skimpy bikinis came strolling by and I'm not talking gigantic in a good way lol.
Thinking back on it I have a picture of that "What has been seen cannot be unseen!" cat in my head. lol

I used to spend a lot of time in the Charlotte area when friends went to some schools there. I've been bugging my wife about us taking a vacation there for awhile. It's a great place and I miss it!

eastern NC Barbeque is mustard base
I live in Lexington, NC ( well at High Rock Lake south of town )
edit:
BBQ = bbq-ing any type of meat....beef,pork, chicken, etc.....
Barbeque = pulled pork ...... at least around here in Davidson County/Lexington, NC....... barbeque capitol of the world......
the Eastern style/western style changes right around High Point/Greensboro/Burlington.... ( aka eastern Side of the Piedmont/Triad )

Confirming that Lexington is indeed Barbeque Capital of the World. Get the "brown"... Its graciously placed about perfectly for me to either get lunch there, or dinner there, depending on whether or not the Tar Heels are playing an early or late game on Saturday...

Eastern NC is Vinegar based...
Western is all about Hickory Smoked BBQ
SC is the only place I have had that horrid mustard based BBQ.
-
And speaking of hillbillies... the correct pronunciation is App-a-latch-an.
Anyone that says otherwise is wrong!

Yes, my understanding as well....
Eastern NC - vinegar based
SC - mustard based
West NC - Ketchup based
I'm a South Carolinian by birth, having spent almost my entire life in the SC lowcountry, but I have to say I'm more of a fan of the Eastern NC style BBQ, but the SC "mustard" style is OK I just can't take too much of the sauce...
The trick with any good BBQ is the slow smoking of the meat, and very very light on the sauce regardless of style. And for god's sake, the pork should be pulled, not chopped into a fine mush much like I've seen so many "western NC" BBQ places do. My wife's family is from Hickory, NC, and the first time I saw what they called BBQ I didn't know if I wanted to throw up or cry.
When I run my smoker it's fueled with hickory and oak, and is normally filled with about 45-50 lbs of Boston butts, and I keep it going for between 10 and 12 hours at about 250 degrees. Then the meat is pulled and served naked with sauce on the side, usually a vinegar and pepper sauce with a tiny bit of Shealy's BBQ sauce (carolina gold) mixed in just for a little kick. (I normally never use the Carolina Gold sauce straight for anything other than chicken, it's fantastic on chicken.)
:aok to slow cooked pork on a saturday with a few good beers.

Yep my mom lives east of Rocky Mount and I have been around the east/west NC bbq thing for a long time. I have a sister-in-law that refers to it as "pickled pork." :devil

yeh, no doubt too much vinegary sauce and you wing up eating what tastes like, well, vinegar.
Sauce, light, and on the side. :aok

This thread is fine and dandy.
In fact, I just spent all of last week running amok amongst Georgia and the Carolina's and had my first decent low-country boil in about 10 years. :rock
I also had a plate full of fried chicken, collards, squash, okra/tomatoes and black-eyed peas with a massive sweet tea, all for a grand whopping total of $8, while in Macon :rock :rock
but
You guys down south still haven't figured out yet that a cheesesteak is not beef tips tossed on a stale hoagie roll with some cheese thrown on top :devil

That's fine--we feel the same way whenever we're forced to eat what passes for Barbeque in the rest of the country!

That VonMessa is the problem I face when I go up north. I can't find anyone that knows how to cook a good pot of chitterlings. :noid
Which is probably a good thing seeing as I can't stand that crap. :rofl

I forget the highway in NC, but there is a very historicaly scenic one I believe that I've seen incredible pictures of views from.
For the same reasons you posted is exactly why I hate SoCal and love every chance I get to head to Northern CA, the further north and away I get from this place that I work to make a living, the better. Where my family vacations we know and are friends with more of the people that live in the north-half of the county, percentage wise, than the neighbors living on my block and on my street here in LA.

Years back some friends and I were working near Salley, SC. Right about the time the annual Chitlin' Strut took place.
I'd go again......

Holy god the smell of that place. I can't take the smell of one or two people cooking that stuff. I don't even want to think what a festival would smell like.
