So this isn't a wish for a plane that didn't actually serve in WW2, right?

ok well, technicaly it was still experimental until 1948... but there were flying prototypes that were used in combat in 1945

I heard they used them in durability testing with live ammo. Some guy on the BBS had a great-uncle that was the test pilot, so you know it's legit.
Might be the only fighter that can survive a non-linear flight path within 10 miles of a CV group. ;)

The P-82 was used over Japan for live firing tests to see how easily the P-82 could avoid Japanese AAA. There is a very respected member of the AH community who's uncle was a test pilot that died during one of these test flights over Yashikamijojo in 1945.

Then we must have it in game. We must.
SpencAce great idea! I don't know how we overlooked this airplane all this time and I know a lot about WWII. I researched the raid on Macho Grande where the P82 would have been so much more effective.

honest question:
what was the main purpose of the twin mustang? its key role? its dogfighting capabilities? and such?
idk, just something about its design makes me think of it as a turkey. :headscratch:

Range.
It was meant as a very long range escort. Lots of fuel and two pilots. One could rest while the other drove.
F-82s scored the first Allied kills in the Korean War. An La7 I believe.

No that wasn't the P-82, it was the P51VLR(20mm). We've had this discussion before! :)

Nope, the P-82. Maybe the player who's uncle died over Yashikamijojo would provide more details on his last mission.

Striker never did recover from that fight. Was a sad end to an otherwise glorious career. Of course George Zipp never returned. <S>

Neigh! But the twin 109... :aok :noid

109-Z ftw. Would love to see P-82 vs 109Z battles, without having to play 1946

Early war plane vs. Didn't make it in time plane?
Kind of lopsided, isn't it?

Which one would be an "early war" plane in your opinion? :headscratch:

the 109-Z is just a twin 109 in the game. basically a copy of the twin mustang they took 2 109s and combined them by one wing. you can look em up on yahoo images.

You cant copy something that didnt exist at the time?

i dont think the 109Z was a REAL plane, was it?
i thought it was created soley for that game, kinda like a "secret missions" type of plane that they made so the axis would have a twin ac like the mustang.

The "z" model was adbandoned as a prototype. On my resource it says the F-82 never made it to combat and the project was cancelled.

The F-82 wasn't cancelled. The Air Defense Command replaced their P-61s with the F-82 and it also went on to see action in the Korean War, being credited with the first three North Korean kills.

It said something about getting cancelled, but also said something about them getting MiGs and a few sorties as bomber escort.

If your resources contradicts itself then it's really not that good of a resource. No, the F-82 did not score any kills against any MiGs nor did they act as bomber escorts. The F-82's early mission was to provide air cover during the early days of the Korean War when the US/UN forces where in head long retreat down Korea and then as ground support and then later on doing night time interdiction missions until replaced by the B-26.
F-82s scored a total of 4 kills: Yak 11, Yak 9 and 2x La-7s.

I've always wondered what would happen if the two pilots had a disagreement over tactics in the midst of a dogfight...
-
Apparently that was only a problem in the E model, the F and Gs had a radar officer instead of a copilot.

It would split into two P-51s and they would follow their ideas. :lol

"The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was the last American piston-engine fighter ordered into production by the United States Air Force. Based on the P-51 Mustang, the F-82 was originally designed as a long-range escort fighter in World War II, however the war ended well before the first production units were operational, so its postwar role changed to that of night-fighting."
WIKI..."However the War ENDED BEFORE the first [production units were available"
