Apparently this guy was having a run of bad luck AND bad health.
No insurance, no one to help him.
So he robs a bank of $1.00 to get jailed and consequently get the medical help he needed so badly.
A crazy world.

regarding the news, it's really sad that he has to resort to it. been there myself, unemployed, no money and no insurance. I thought about it, so I could get the care I needed. dont really condone it, but when you have no choice...

Another stupid person (protected species) wanting us to support him.
Failure to plan on his part is not my problem.
I'm sure this will get locked.........

Unfortunately yes, it probably will get locked. The inability to have a calm and articulate discussion here is appalling.
As for the man, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive these days.

Thank you for typing the thought that I could not mold into words, Bab.

if i lose health insurance im done... arthritis in my knee... for 52 shots (one shot a week) its almost 10 grand a year. do the math per shot so i can function.... 1 buck is nothing compared to some.
desperate times call for desperate measures though.

I usually concur with most of your comments. Not this time.
Although I most certainly would never want to see you in the position that this guy is in,just imagine if it happened to you through no fault of your own.
It "seems" like this guy worked hard all his life and through no fault of his own, he finds himself needing help after many years of contributing to society.
While I think he took things to the extreme, extreme times call for extreme measures.
What would you do??
Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them. What if it did?? despite your best laid plans.
What would you do if the rug was pulled out from under your well planned life??
It'll never happen to you, right??? I'm sure this guy said the same thing.

I'd do the same thing if the only other option was death. If somebody had a problem with it I'd tell them to reject care to all the real criminals in our prisons before trying to play the 'leech on society' card with me.
-
If I was in charge, I would only allow people that contributed to the system to be able to take anything from the system.
Take unemployment for example, if I had my way, you couldn't collect unless you worked for 8 years (a ratio of 8:1). So, if you were a machinist for 40 years and suddenly you were unemployed, you could collect for 5 years- no questions asked. If you were young enough, you could retrain/return to school for a new career while not having to work or if you were old enough you could retire early.

I didn't realize the economic downturn affected the coca cola delivery man sector.

Ironic, I was at the world of Coca Cola today :lol

His position led him to choices, go without care and die, or the next best thing. Good man he got forced into a corner and came out with a bit of benefit. Small charges and care. I won't say anything about economics cause the rules and I have no idea about such, but I will say that people are getting desperate. What if this guy had robbed people or resorted to criminal activity. I think he acted on a good note proving all he had.

Hope he enjoys his time IN jail :aok

If the guy was 20 I could see your point. At his age... no. He's had plenty of time to be able to stand on his own two feet.

he doesnt strike me as a quitter or a freeloader - he held down the same job for 17yrs, found work after being made redundant, found another job after that one.
its sad that even in the C21st in the affluent west its possible to work hard, keep your nose clean and still struggle ...
-
At his age he should be well on his way to taking care of himself. The problem is some folks who don't want to take care of him but want everyone to babysit him.
If you read.... all got money. No.. some do nothing more than scratch the surface. I'm not fond of having to babysit any corporation either.... but we were forced to do so without any regard to how we as the people felt about it.
what i don't understand, is how the guy couldn't find anything. the thing about not being able to stock the shelves.......bs. if he drove a coca cola truck, he lifted more than he did at the store.
me personally......i keep a small emergency fund so if i need anything....such as my upcoming visit to the foot doc for that ulcer on my ankle......i just pay for it.
if i were in his shoes.....i'd have simply walked into the er, and worried about how to pay for it later. go drag the lawn mower around and cut lawns, go pump gas.....go deliver pizzas. there is no such thing as "there's nothing out there" if you REALLY want to work.

:bhead I guess there is no way to get a point across here :lol
probably not. you mentioned my emergency fund.....i constantly add to it, when i can afford it. i figure the thing going on with my ankle is gonna cost me somewhere in the ballpark of a grand. no big deal. it's still cheaper than paying for insurance. when i take that money out of there, i don't consider it gone. i consider it borrowed, and i have to repay it, just as i'd have to repay a loan from you.
:aok
-
it's still cheaper than paying for insurance.
I am confused. Does this mean you choose to be without insurance?
-

yup. paid for it for many many years. over those many many years, i used it exactly 3 times, totaling less than 10k. my share at the places i worked at was in the ballpark of $400, on top of what my employer paid.
so now, rather than give that money away, i keep it for myself, and pay my own way.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anything in that article that said he lost his job for "good" reasons. All it says is, "amid the economic downturn" (which could mean, "He fell asleep at the wheel amid the economic downturn" for all we know). There is absolutely nothing in that particular article that suggests he was a hard worker, or anything of the sort.
Now he might be the greatest, most hard working guy in the world, but there's nothing in that article to suggest that...
-
On absolutely no rule breaking note:
The bank he robbed was less than a mile from a free health clinic.
