Title: I suck!
Post by: Max on June 22, 2011, 05:17:25 PM
Started playing AH back in '01. Today my k/d & gunnery is probably about the same. Fly time is limited but hey...after 10 years it would be nice to rtb with a few scalps on a regular basis. I have a good grasp of ACM's but never string the right ones together at the right time. Anyone up to the challenge of helping me out? PM or say here.

Max,

Stop by the TA between 8 and 9:30 central time most nights during the week.  If I'm not currently booked (most days I seem to be), I can help you, or we have a lot of good sticks that are helpfull that tend to be around in that time area.  Or if I am booked and you want to ride along while I teach just send me a PM while I'm in there, and if the seat is available you can have it.

Max, feel your pain.  After doing this since 2002, I have a few ideas.  I fly Bish.  If ever you see me on, feel free to say howdy, & we'll wing.

I fly Bish as well. Usually fly mornings EDT when time permits. I'll keep an eye out for ya. Thanks

btw Hap I saw your "grill" post in OC. I'm a BBQ/grill boy wonder. If my gunnery was as good as my ribs or brisket I'd have a 12 k/d :P  I'll trade ya tips for recipes

for starters are you satisfied with your controls? Do you always sees the guy that shoots you?

haven't had a grill for years.  i miss it.  Sundays I'm on in the morning frequently.  Other than that evenings for just a bit.  No regular schedule.

Good question. One of my squaddies insists I was trained at the Stevie Wonder School of Situational Awareness :)

I have a CH setup w/ F-stick, throttle, peds. I have 8way hat set to (starting at 12:00) front-up, front right, right, rear right, rear, rear left, left, front left. Pinky key is set to look up modifier. Note - none of my views are up or dwn except for 12:00 and the pinky.

Yes I do lose sight of nme in a fight...too often in fact. If I'm in a furball or 2v1, I may as well be wearing a blindfold.

So forward on the hatswitch is the only view modified by the up modifier? That'd be a serious problem. Did I read that correctly? You can't look at your high 3 or high 6 etc.?

Post by: Max on June 23, 2011, 10:32:55 AM
No, all my views can be modified UP by the pinky. My 12:00 hat is FWD+UP.

your 12:00 position on the hat should be look front, because you can set an over nose view with the arrows and F10, permitting you to see better over the nose of the plane, at the cost of seeing the gunsight. This is not a detail, its very important if you want to shoot anyone lower than you.

My look up modifier is on my throttle as I'm used to use the left hand for look up from the times I didn't have a throttle. My pinky was toggle zoom when I had a fighterstick, but that's not very important

nrshida came up with a crazy method of training your SA, but it looks like working....go to the DA, up at the lake in your plane of choice, and unload the guns on the runway. Roll, go to the center of the lake and try to survive the longest you can without worrying about shooting just yet.

If you are not satisfied with your shooting go offline, and change your ammo multiplier in the arena settings to 10. Then roll and shoot planes for at least 30mins for a few days. The drones may only circle over the base, but you can add difficulty yourself by getting high over the field and simulate a picking situation where you come at high angle/speed.

great idea!

fwiw, keep in mind the magic airspeed # is 400 by the red needle . . . always good to have enough alt to get there because getting away and then returning is often a very smart thing to do.  and low fights near your own field are great.  low fights near an bad guy field is a fool's errand unless cap is secure.

i've never had great pilot skills, so for me, choosing fights has proved to be 3/4's of the path to happy flying.  might not be so for the skilled.  but for me, it works.

Ah, my dad plays this game too and he does the same thing. I always told him he should the same thing Noir just suggested, it really helps to keep track of guys trying to move underneath your nose, it also makes lining up for jabo easier.

Just so we're on the same page allow me to clarify.

The standard view on any aircraft is look front. By pressing my 12:00 hat the look front is now look front up...giving me a 45 o view, halfway between front and up. Just below the red fire button there's a 4 way button. I have that mapped to (12:00) PageUP =raises head position= (3:00) Move head right (6:00) PageDwn=lowers head position (9:00) Move head left.

Thoughts on that^^^

I like the DA Lake and the ammo x ideas

the default view on any plane is NOT look front. If you press look front the view will not change because you have not defined it. Try pressing look front, move the view and save it. If you release the button the view will come back to default view, if you press the button it will go the view you save just before. That is the view is use to set the over nose view. Hope I'm being clear with my limited english   :) SOme people actually set their default view to "over the nose" and press look front to see their instruments.

on the other hats I used to have zoom in/out, the trimmings and primary/secondary fire. The trigger is fire all guns.

I'm confident with my SA so I never did the lake with no ammo, but others did with good improvement. I do the gunnery stuff every once in a while when I'm not sure about certain planes.

I think what he means by default view is that while you sit there and not touch any buttons you are looking out the front . When I push my hat to 12 o'clock I have the up view. I have the pink switch as the modifier. So with the hat in the 12 o'clock position I and the pink as I get the up/front view.

A good but boring excessive is to fly around the drones off line doing loop and yoyos but never loose site of the drone you pick. That is what some mean by by getting your head outside of the plane. Learn to fly without looking out the front window.  .

If you release the button the view will come back to default view, if you press the button it will go the view you save just before.

 :headscratch:

one of the trainers told me that all planes default view was looking straight ahead 12 o'clock without having to program any keys. you open with saying "the default view on any plane is NOT look front." but you finish up with "If you release the button the view will come back to default view,"  i have heard of some who insist that one should use the "over and right or left of the nose positioning" of their numpad 8 key, but that was also told to me by the trainers that it was a personal preference. some trainers also said that using the zoom way in to shoot is a personal preference and can become a bad habit by limiting your field of view, can cause one to get locked in to target fixation and makes it hard to use other views for SA when in zoom in mode and in a fight.

the ones who use the shooting while below the nose by using the over and right of nose view usually use their tracers to walk the bullets to their target which is more of a crutch rather than practicing and learning true deflection shooting when the enemyred is below the nose. could one of the trainers give us some clues or info regarding these matters

i like the idea of going to da lake and seeing howlong you can survive dodging others with no guns to shoot back, sounds like elementary school dodge ball where they formed the circle and you was in the middle dodging the ball. not like high school where you had 2 teams one on each side.

i was taught that the most important views while fighting are the following forward, forward up, up, back up, back, left, right  with secondary important views being back up right, back up left , right up , left up. learn to read your con in your particular viewed position and which way your con is moving in relation to that particular view, this is very important i was told

trainers  Widewing, Murdr, TC, Badboy, Ren taught me alot

Maybe a bit later this morning if you're around?

Yes FLS. I recently downloaded Murdr's hps file tho haven't installed it yet. Will do so this morning and see what the changes may be.

Del - I'll shoot you a PM.

FWIW, this is the exact same set up that I use. I've mapped my D key as a look down modifier, but seldom use it.
I also went through a phase where I tried the over the side of the nose view but found it to be ineffective for the way I aim and shoot. I agree it's a personal preference thing, but have not seen anything that would link it with improved gunnery in my opinion.

You're too good to survive!

If you're new to the game or very low on ability, you get one or two kills then escape to saftey because you know you're going to die if you stay.

You as a decade long vet on the otherhand are quietly confident in your ability to the point that you always, always push your luck to get 'just one more scalp then I'll RTB'. That is my prognosis :)

You could survive if you wanted to, but long ago you realised how fruitless landing kills really is. So you push and push every sortie to get a higher kill count.

Hiya Max,

I just got all of my stuff set back up for some flight time.   I will look for ya in the TA. I am pretty rusty and when I took my last break I was terrible at best.

been flying since off and on since 01 also .  was shocked that the 412th kept me in the squadron !
