AW had the death star. I kinda wonder why we don't have that here. Over the past couple of years I've noticed the diversity of game play shrink and I think this might add something back to it. The only exception would be for 999...He wouldn't be allowed to add more then one player to his bomber as no one would survive. :old:

actually 999 should be forced to fly with gunners every time. it would make it even for the attacking force.

Using SEARCH (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php?action=search) you could possibly discover that it is a lag issue as well as an Either/Or issue.
The choice was Either gun yourself and have formations available Or have only single bombers, no self gunning, and be at the mercy of trying to find one gunner, let alone enough to fill a bomber.
I too enjoyed getting a bomber full of gunners and turning with unsuspecting fighters but, realistically, how often did you have a gunner at all otherwise?

The Deathstar was an iffy affair in which you would be very lucky to be able to have a full compliment join your crew and stay connected throughout the entire flight. Usually, someone couldn't join due to connection issues, someone would get discoed mid-flight or it would end up a messy, laggy and warpy affair.

The Deathstars Were fun especially when you were able to find a full fort of gunners and the in house movies were the best and free beer. But then again 999 does not need the death star he is deadly in the 17 just by himself hehehehehe.
-
I miss the Death Stars.
We'd get two bombers full of squad members and then fly low with a couple of squad escorts.
The banter among us gunners was gut busting.

all true, but on the rare occasions when it went well, was a frikkin Blast! Few better ways to waste a Saturday night

We, the 327th Steel Talons, were fortunate enough to be able to pull off the "Deathstar" trick almost at will. At times we could put 2-3 of them in the air at once. Better still, we had guys like "Eagle", my good friend we lost a couple of years ago, who were excellent bomber pilots, and could hit targets with ease. With 2-3 well piloted "Deathstars", full of Sierra Hotel fighter pilots who were good at gunnery, we could fly with near impunity, and wreak havoc. At least until the entire squad was laughing too hard to hit the broad side of a barn with a sawed off shotgun, from the inside. There were times when I laughed so hard I could barely breathe, and go so light headed I thought I'd pass out. If a few of us were drinking, some had to turn off vox because they did not use headphones and had families.
The old days are gone forever, but live on in the minds of those fortunate enough to have been there.

I remember one mission where we had 3 deathstars (minus navigators... poor bastards would have bored to death. Screw the points, full speed ahead!) and a compliment of about 6 A-26's with their 2 gunners. It was almost a country wide mission and if memory serves, we had very few disco's. It was quite stable considering what we were trying to do.
My squad, -=ASB=- gathered up the people (we maybe had 15 members, couldn't do it alone) and we went from the Cz northern most base to the Bz southeastern most base. When we reached our target I think we had lost an A-26 or two but all went well in terms of bombing the target and keeping our gunners, though the egress was a bit different. Only one death star made it home and 3 A-26's. I don't remember the gunner situation with the 26's and I might be forgetting a few that dropped from our 17 but there were some people who disco'd. All in all, that mission was a blast and probably my favorite of all time. I doubt it would have been nearly as much fun has we not had the ability to load so many people into those bombers.
I'd like it if at all possible. Maybe remove a drone for every 3 gunners. So at 3 one drone would vanish, then at 6 the second drone vanishes. :aok
Now, if we could only remove lag... :bhead

Aces high has the next best thing though. The typhoon, to quote a squaddie "Floats like a dump truck, stings like the death star."

The Red Barons never lifted a bomber without at least one gunner on board but the death star was the most fun furballing at the capturable fields around the lake.
Good times which unfortunately now would be whined about as dweeby.

Finally...it took them long enough!

I don't think they would be whined about. Actually it would thin out the arena a bit.
I came over from FA years back. No death star there. If you killed the buff did you get 10 kills?? lol

they are some wonderful memories to just sit and think about at times.......... always brings a cheerful smile.... yep
SM ( Snowman from "The Damned" ) had created "The Eagles Squadron" and we would train mercifully together and then go in to the mains and wreck havoc with our Bomber Blitz's take out a complete field and capture it within 3 minutes or less of the first approach....... then we go hunting in deathstars and just fall out our chairs laughing etc just as SaVaGe posted above..... I would fly/wing sometimes with the 327th back then when it was not squad night or I was up and none of my squaddies were online.... remember flying with YES, Eagle, Stick, KOOL, COORS Savage etc......
getting with KGann or tigger and piloting a B-17 or Vader while the other got in the gunners spot and flew around having a blast dogfighting and chasing other players...... making them freak out and auger etc......
just found this old "New" review of one of the last versions of AW over at combatsim's website

Flying the death star was great. It was always a hoot and the banter between pilot and all the gunners was always the best part. I howled with laughter every time we upped one with 1CAC.
That was a great bunch of guys to be with.
I miss those days :)

Flying? deathstars were a bit gamey for defending a base.. just roll one on the runway and man the guns. didn't have to take off.
-
In AW ballistics were not really a factor, AND you could turnfight with a 17. Fully crewed planes here would still get hacked from the skies with one good pass. It would not be even close to what we had in AW. That being said it was great fun back then, but it would not be the same here.
-

I never had problems getting people to gun for me. death stars were the norm when I flew them. way too many times I would bomb the base, then park the b17 right behind the runway spawn and kill 10 to 12 uppers as they were taxing. same for the a26 drop bombs, go park it and kill away :D.
anyway Hitech himself has said many times, that we had a choice of multiple gunners or slaved gun fired by a single gunner but not both. so I guess the death stars are a thing of the past.

I think KOOL, Gooss, and Piles3 are the only guys left of the original 327th who still play. I haven't been on in almost a year, I actually forgot and let my account lapse, I had been playing so little in the last 3-4 years. STICK "retired" before the move to AH, I think YES did either right before or right after, and Eagle made his final approach and folded his wings a couple of years ago.
Yeah, those were the days, when we'd stay up until 2-3AM flying, you just couldn't quit. That lasted well into AH II. But as much as I love AH, the community here was never quite what it was there.
Man, the mere mention of "BigWeek" brings back floods of memories. Wow.
Thanks TC.

We used to do the Death Star thing from time to time in 24's..but more often we did the opposite..
We leveraged... the long bomb runs with a single bomber to the spit factory...with a ton of freinds
We would order Pizza...get some beers...do the excruciating full fuel long climb out...
The whole time we sat and talked on the vox...and the group became a better fighting unit...a tighter unit...durable friendships...
The raiding of an active furball was a rare event (cheap and dirty)...much more common for our unit was the long dedicated bomb run.
That is what I miss about death stars...however...I have found a similar outlet...
Fly Scenarios or even in the MA...with other bomber pilots...full fuel...long climb...dedicated strike...
You get exactly the same thing...Dale/AH has it right...he killed the Death Star (much abused)...but did not kill the best aspects of it...
Team Work...camaraderie...banter.. .
Bomber pilots will know what I am talking about...

The Days of AW Deathstars will always bring back some of the funnest and wildest Vox chat ive ever had and some intense fights Deathstar to Deathstar or NOE feild runs with bunch of guys in the Deathstar having a good ol time skimmin the deck, oh we died at the hands of our fellow pilots many times :rofl

No Flight Simmer should be denied the Thrill of The Death Star ............I say bring it back for a week or two ....even if it will not be permanent.

Formations are, have been, and will remain, rubbish. Nix them, add gunners, let some fun be had.
-
I cannot understand how back in the dialup days, death stars were possible. "GASp, and people still had fun!"
And now that everyone uses highspeed internet, they cant be added back because of LAG!? yet we have FORMATIONS that can lazer gun any plane out of the sky with "all guns on target" abilities. And ONE guy,ONE GUY....that has "three chances" to..Lanc stuka your tank spawn..Lanc stuka your fighter hangers, and Lanc stuka your freggin' CV causing the ruining of fun for Hundreds of other players.
Are you %^&ing kidding me!? :bhead
+10 for the days of old.

Please read my post. With the differences to our respective games, ONE aircraft making ONE pass can totally wipe out our "Deathstar" regardless of the gunners. I have very fond memories of that, but it is not realistic in the game we now play. That being said *hijack* I really would like to know the status of my single "gunner" in my aircraft.
-

Not sure how they made it possible but they did...and they did it with little problem...
I do not like the term Death Star...
It was a party...so much fun it should have been illegal...
I guess it is illegal....?
Sigh

Manning a b17 death star during a UK AW con was informative....all the gunners lagged seriously behind the pilot some more than others....poor bogie was shot at from 4 different time zones :devil

I did read your post, and ill say "prove it"
Do you have ANY idea what a b-17 or another heavy bomber could handle if the gunners had any kind of skill like the LTAR's do?
hah, go ahead, come on in for that "easy" kill.

Are you effectively saying that a single bomber with manned guns would be more dangerous than a formation being run by 1 guy?
I'd be pretty surprised, assuming the attacking fighter is setting up properly. For the average guy attacking in a hurry in the main it might be similar but for a guy that's being at all careful, the volume of fire that can be brought to bear on him just isn't there.

I havent seen kool or spaz in perhaps 3 years. only reason I found ah was because spaz told me about it a few years back. I came back about 4 or 5 years ago but I seldom see anybody.

As someone who thinks he has "bomber killin" skills, I would truly love to try attacking a deathstar manned by capable gunners. 999000 would not be welcome to crew that deathstar as he is not human. I know he is an AI program designed to thwart me and my ilk. Not you INK, ilk, it's different :).

I bet such a bomber would be less deadly and less survivable than the current versions. 999000 having 4-7 machine guns to use instead of just 1 or 2, the guns focused on one fighter rather than unfocused, ect, ect...

Three good gunners in the top, tail and ball positions of a death star could be as formidable as the current setup as they wouldn't have the convergence issues and they'd be more formidable against multiple attackers. Then add the chin and side gunners. I think you guys underestimate the death star.

I have seen KOOL, Gooss, and Piles in the last year or two. Gooss is even on the boards at times. KOOL is probably pretty busy with the kids now, I think Gooss' kid is close to being grown. Spaz was supposed to be moving real close to me a couple of years or so ago, but I never heard from him again. I haven't seen Piles in person since his last "world tour" while he was still "in". I know KOOL was flying 2-3 years ago. Last couple of times a 327th group of any real size was on was when my Dad died a few years ago, and when Eagle died. The site is still up http://www.327th.com/main.htm (http://www.327th.com/main.htm) and still has a few on the roster. I doubt it is up to date, shows Gooss updated it 5/09. It does have a link to Eagle's Memorial Flight. I think most of those who still fly regularly are guys who joined well after the move to AH.
Just noticed, the site has you listed on the memorial, you might want to get that corrected.

Well remembering back, it was still possible to defend yourself single handed, if you only got attacked by one enemy, anything else it was a clock ticking to death.
I also remember having to go through the 1-2-3-4-5.ect keys to jump to different gunner placements, kind of a pain.
The only thing i dont like is if your guns out of ammo, your formation can still put down fire because of the different angles of attack.

What exactly is fun about a death star entering a fur-ball or any fight? As a fighter that has to worry about other fighters trying to shoot you down what exactly is going to make it more fun by having a bunch of stationary guns shooting at you no matter what maneuver you perform? Between fighting the guy you are engaged with, the HO fly by-s, the 190s and 51s coming in burning from the re-entry I think it is fun enough lol. How will another 8 or 10 guns shooting at you enhance it? Think realistically, the buff will come in last due to its speed and just end the fight.
Just another way to pick and ruin fights. There is a reason HT did not implement them :aok

:D deldalos your missing the point, the fun is for the occupants of the death star, roaring into their mics about the poor sapp (not the Sapp we all know here) that happens to wonder into gun range, or the guy that sees a lone buff and thinks he has an easy kill, only to realize to late as his wing folds in half, what just happened.

While making most bombers less effective and less survivable in exchange for something that would very rarely be used.
HiTech has spoken on this in the past. It isn't going to happen.

Yes.
It's not an either/or issue. Or maybe it is.
It's, "I can have a formation of three bombers that I can gun myself" or "I can fly a single bomber that I cannot gun and need gunners to defend myself".
So, if you cannot get any gunners, at all, you would be pretty screwed.

Why not give the option? If you have formation selected then no Death Star. Uncheck formation and then the fun begins

Darn Baldie, I was an INTRUDER and actually their last CO. I always remember us engaging each other on the way there or on the way back with our gunned buffs. Man remember the thing between Scree and ^Heat? Those were the days my friend! I used to almost always get #2 or 3 and even #1 several times in buffing without ever dropping a bomb in my first year playing AW. I just gunned until they finally made me fly. In RRETO2, it was a constant war between the Intruders and the Red Barons. If I could only turn back time.... :aok
