Looks great!

yes :rock, I wasn't expecting the P40 to be the next updated plane tho :headscratch:
-
Great to see one of the old birds get a facelift.
-
Looks great!
Do the flaps still break when someone looks at it funny?
-
Congrats on your becoming a member of the Skinner Team, Cactuskooler :aok
awesome job you did on the P-40E it is :rock 'in
also good job also, Waffle :aok

Nice, now make all those switches operable! :D
-
i hope someone reskins all the current skins on the new p40, i rly like the skins currently available.

I do not know.

Looks nice indeed!
congrats Cactus well deserved addition to the skinning team.
:salute
PS:how's the skin for the Me410 and Beau comming along............ :devil

I fly Fester's skins almost exclusively on the P-40, his 343rd FG is skin is my favorite. I hope he is willing and able to update and resubmit all of his skins for this bird. Cactus your skin is a beauty as well!
Still hoping we'll get the P-40L and N, too. But I'm really happy with the new cockpit art. I too often overlook mentioning that, but Waffle truly does a magnificient job!
-
All I can say is, it's about time! :D :aok
-
Looks great HTC. Now my new Zekes will have an updated NME.
Very cool :salute

:aok
-
I do not know.
Well, put one on the runway and make a funny face at it and see if the flaps fall off :lol Seriously though, if that was fixed we would see a lot more P40s around. I can only fly it for 2 or 3 runs before I get frustrated with it. It is a nice plane and fun to fight in it.
-
It does look NICE. I am still hoping that all that beauty is worthy of an update to the flight model and may the inclusion of some later model P-40s though.
-
One thing I notice on the cockpit screenshot: all the breaker switches are down (off) when they'd be turned on (up) when starting up and taking off, fighting, etc. That's the bank of switches in the lower right side bank. At least, that's what I remember learning when I did my P-40 skins.

Probably gonna be fixed before the new version is released.
It looks great though! :rock
-
That it does! Looks sweet, in fact!

so when you going to put the merlin engine in it? :bolt:

that does look sweet! awesome work cactus. :rock :airplane:

I did not know it was an issue.
-
Looks as good as one can expect a P-40 to look. It is a ugly model to work with, so when it stays ugly one can't be too surprised. :devil That ugliness is captured quite nicely though.

I doubt you will see many. The flaps are not the issue, the aircraft's lack of performance when facing hordes of P-51Ds, Spitfire Mk XVIs, La-7s and such is the issue.
Also, its flaps aren't really combat flaps, so I am wondering why losing them is such an issue to you?
-
The P-40 more than other planes needs flaps working at various speeds. The first notch of flaps comes out at high speed and helps high speed breaking turns as well as when you really have to dump some speed to get a kill (before the target turns the tables and shoots you down).
Historically they had very quick (from 0 to full deflection in 1-2 seconds) flaps operated by a hydraulic system. You just pulled the lever and the flaps moved until you stopped, meaning you could choose any setting of degrees you wish.
In-game this means that even if you only had 1 notch, 10 degrees or whatever it is, the first hit would "jam" that flap and you're toast. Worse yet, the second hit often "jammed" the other flap. It's some odd quirk of the damage model where the hitbox for the flaps occupies the entire airframe so any round hits it first.
:lol :rofl
:noid :noid :noid
But the end result is it really gets you killed fast. It would be nice to see if fixed, same as "first hit kills a gun" issue on F6F before it was remodeled.

Don't confuse real life with AH. With flaps I can play with 0s. With out it is dead. What the problem is is that every ping results in flap damage (OK not every, 90%) and it catches you with flaps down a notch or two. After that, i have to let them ping me again so the other flap also gets stuck so I can at list balance it.
Then again, we are probably talking about different stiles too. If someone just dives in on unsuspecting targets or takes a head on and runs flaps are not an issue. If you try to dog fight one, well, you would not have posted the above.
-
Excellent 3D modeling, along with very fine workmanship with the profile skin. Well done fellows.

Great work on the P-40! Ty HTC.
And as it has been said many times before, please take another look at the fragility of the flaps. :pray

Nice work.
It sure do have a purdy mouf :lol

Thank you HTC

If they allow it to play with A6Ms they should be even more limited. It is stupid to do scenarios where the weaknesses of the Japanese aircraft are modeled, fragility, flammability, lack of armor, but the weaknesses of the American aircraft are gamed away.
-
Dedalos put it rather nicely, Karnak.
No P-40 fans are requesting super uber flappen (TM, patent pending). It's just they get damaged first time, almost every time. It would be like taking a bullet in the cockpit and losing one of your elevators. It's an oversight or throwback to older damage coding, and we just want to see it brought up to the higher standards of the more recent additions.
That is all. Nobody is advocating it should turn with zekes or the like.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rock :rock :rock :rock :x

dedalos said that it already does have the ability to turn with A6Ms when using flaps. They just want the flaps to not be as easily damaged so that they can do so more reliably. Nobody is asking for the ability to be increased, but it is BS that it is even there in the first place.
The Japanese face Buffaloes that are far more nimble than the ones they faced, F4Fs made of titanium and, apparently, P-40s that can turn with Zeros.

Very nice looking P-40! It would be awesome to see Hawk75A to go with the P-40B...at least one can hope!

With Dedalos in it, yeah, but that doesn't mean P-40s are overmodeled. It's just the way he is.
And yeah, There's something with P-40 flaps damage model which isn't right.
-
I hope they remodel the P-40B while they are at it. :D

I am sure they will. Hopefully a new model or two of related aircraft as well, P-40N or P-36A for example.

Maybe if we ask nice we can have a Merlin powered F model like this one that should be flying this weekend at Duxford. And maybe they'll redo the P40C like the one in the background that will be flying at Duxford, along with the Hawk 75...that will be flying this weekend at Duxford.
Oh and maybe just for fun and additional skins, HTC will do the P51K like the one in the background, with the correct Aeroproducts propeller and Dallas style canopy, that will be flying at Duxford this weekend....
You get the idea :)

(OT) It's amazing that they misindentified the plane and thought it was another plane alltogether for all these years. I've seen that particular Mustang fly in Swedish Air Force and 78th FG markings.

Sounds like it's still being debated. They thought it was a 78th bird "Twilight Tear" for a long time. Apparently a lot of paperwork, identities got mixed up when some of the Swedish birds went to Israel. I love that they actually have a correct prop for a 51K on it.
They can call it whatever they want as long as they park it at my house :)

Wrong, I said I can play with Zeros. That means, I take advantage of 10 years experience and use it against people that just pull on the stick and think they will out turn you. That does not mean I win all the time (but I can have fun all the time), and when I do is due to a mistake the Zero was forced to make or by deceiving the bad guy. But, with one flap stuck nothing is possible. I am not asking for any improvements on the plane other than fix the one ping flap damage that occurs 90% of the time.

New models aren't outside the realm of the possible. In a previous thread, Pyro said:
I agree that it needs a rework of the flight model but I don't see that being done until the shape is updated. Maybe we could add an F or a K at that time but I'm not sure that will really get us much.
Well, now we're getting the updated shape, so maybe (?) we'll get an additional model or two thrown in there.
I'd hit a late-model Jabo P-40N, and for skins would love a long-tail P-40F/L

It appears the Duxford guys will have to get photos of the other three variants that HTC is adding or remodeling for AH. A nicely done P40N showed up today to go with the 40F and 40C

It's common knowledge that from any given time, the nearest update will always be in two weeks.

HTC like to drip feed news of the new rides out via their website. Usually one a week until the new release is done.

The canopy looks the same way as the the new zero's awesome job on the modelling Waffle :rock :salute
-
The canopy was kind of a challenge to build. It was hard to find detailed pics of the interior of the canopy. I had to use blue prints which was a pain in it's own way: Find the general assembly drawing, then find part number - then cross reference part number with drawing number of the part in drawing index - Get drawing of the part - get dimensions from drawing - build / texture part in 3d.
All in all, I think it came out pretty good. Was actually nice having a full set of factory blueprints for the actual dimensions of parts to work with.
