No traction control, computers, automatic .. just a 4-gear rompin small block vette on a nice day :)

That looked fun. :aok

On my list of cars to drive that stingray....absolutely beautiful car!! Great sound and power, but most of all a classic look. My dad owns a 07' C6 Corvette, used to own a 67' modified Corvette back in the day. Love Corvettes.
However..
... I raise you a 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra

Yes, yes it is.
Nice avatar.
Savor it, it may be the only compliment you ever get from me.

:O
-
wow.
As a 'raise' I'd hafta say that was a fail.
The guy in the Cobra never smiled.
May as well be drivin a trundle-car.
Perhaps I should offer him my Nissan Pickup in trade, would suit his driving style more.
Nothin against the car tho .. sounds nice all the way up the scale,
..the few times he actually pressed on the pedal to the right.

Just watched the Cobra video... Is that a typical speedometer for that car? Probably just me but it was distracting to have the speedo going counter clockwise when he accelerated.
Also curious on how the cameras are mounted, nice steady shot. I have a Fiat Spyder and know of a nice little twisty road that would make for a fun video. Wouldn't mind demonstrating that you don't have to have huge horse power to have fun driving! :D
-
the shame of this is that that dork's gonna total that car some day. was nice sounding, but you can see he's not up to that cars ability.......but he seems to think he is. he's gonna get overly cocky with it, and wrap it around a tree. and the driving gloves......he needs to lose them. :rofl
just got to the part where he crossed the intersection....looking both ways. he looks like the car salesman from true lies. :bolt: :rofl

A period correct speedometer, for the old Cobra, does rotate counter-clockwise.

i thought the tach was supposed to do that also, but i noticed the one in the vid going clockwise.

That's what threw me a bit as well. Odd to have the guages turning opposite like that. Or maybe it isn't for that car, I really wouldn't have any idea.

that used to be one of the biggest mistakes people made, when building kit cobras. they'd put in gages spinning clockwise, when they should be going backwards.

Ya, but are they supposed to both go backwards (tach and speedo) or just the speedo? In the video, only the speedo is going counterclockwise...
I'm just curious by the way...

Not since the GT40.
Don't bring me something some shop or aftermarket guys put together... I want "from the factory" as in available from the dealership, or raced under the factory colors.
-
Oh, I just looked at your yew-t00b vids of that heinously ugly excuse for a car that they crammed 2000 horsepower into. YAWN.
First, it only goes in a straight line. big whoop. Anything can go fast in a straight line. I remember years back seeing a early '80's Chevy Chevette with a blown 502 and a tubbed rear end that ran in the low 7 second range. A lot of money and scary fast. You know what it was, though? Still a POS Chevette. :rofl
:rofl :rofl :rofl
-
Huge difference.
Ford is not involved with any racing in the corvette's class while the corvette entrants are factory teams.
When ford does back a team, they finish 1, 2, 3 at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
In the world rally championship from 2000 to 2010, ford has won it two years in a row (2006-2007) and come in second 7 of those 11 years.
1985 IMSA GTO champion
1986 IMSA GTO champion
1988 IMSA GTO champion
1990 IMSa GTO champion
Like toyota, ford will switch focus from one series to another.
-
and don't forget that ford's kicking chevys butt in the trans am racing.....the only chevy wins this year have come under yellow, and when the competitave fords were tossed out due to wrecks........ :devil
oh yea....and the fords runningf that series are production cars.
then we can go to the cobra jet mustangs.....the quickest production car built right now.

point is, if you pull up a fast chevy, i'll find a faster ford. it's always been that way.
we can thank hot rod and car craft magazines for todays kids thinking that chevys are the ONLTY way to go fast. :aok

heinously ugly excuse for a car...............
Feel welcome to challenge him on the road course at Palm Beach International Raceway.
It does the road course just fine in addition to holding the current guinness world record for standing mile and the fastest officially timed standing mile ever.
It has A/C and all interior equipment in working order and is street driven.

i should add.....i don't dislike chevys. it's fun to pick on you guys though. some of you get too upset way too easily. :devil

The 2000 hp Mustang in CAP's vid? On a road course? :rofl

When ford does back a team, they finish 1, 2, 3 at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
And for the 40 years since they haven't done squat in international sports car racing.
And CAP, you're saying you'd take a "straight from the dealership floor" cobrajet Mustang in a heads-up race against a ZR1?
edit- nevermind, I see it's a drag car.. :rofl
I refer back to my comment about going fast in a straight line. I know, ZR1 vs Cobra Jet Mustang on the 1/4 mile.... race down, turn around, and come back! :rofl :rofl

lol Stitch is kinda of an obsession for me right now, its weird they have a Japanese version of it. Not to get off topic, I don't know much about cars but man I want lol
-
Came from the factory with that capability?
cobra jet mustangs come from the factory running high 8's and high 9's. boss302's come from the factory capable of pulling 1.05g on the skidpad, 0-60 in 4 seconds, and running 11 second 1/4 miles.
gt350's come with those abilities too. actually, the gt350's do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, and run 11.3's i think....and also over 1g on the skid pad. so yea....they'll run with a vette.......
-

Is that factory built drag car street legal?
boss302's come from the factory capable of pulling 1.05g on the skidpad, 0-60 in 4 seconds, and running 11 second 1/4 miles.
Maybe in race trim, but according to the test data the car runs 4.3 sec to 60 and 12.8 in the 1/4 at 113 mph. And it ain't getting anywhere 1.0g on street tires. 0.90g according to C&D.

Nope. M/T tests of the GT350 (and every other one I've found) put it around 12.0 sec flat at 121mph. 3.7 sec to 60 does match the Corvette Z06, but the Vette walks away from it in the 1/4 mile at 11.7 sec at 123.6mph.
Go get a ZR1 and the ante is upped so far outside of Mustang territory it's not even worth looking into.

.91 for the gt. 1+ for the boss. and that is the street car. the "R" model is obviously better.
never said the cobra jet was street legal. it's a factory production car though. i'm sure that there's ways to get a vin assigned to one to make it street legal though.....
Our tester produced 519 rwhp on our in-house DynoJet, and created quite a stir on the street and at the track. At Gainesville Raceway, it blasted to an 11.62 at 122 mph on the grippy 265/40/19 Goodyear F1 Supercar G2 tires. We lapped the Steed during a test-and-tune night at Bradenton Motorsports Park on Mickey Thompson drag radials and ran 11.55 at 120, albeit in hotter, more humid conditions.

it is second to a z06 though. but that's ok, 'cause although the vette is a beautiful car.....this incarnation of the mustang is much much more beautiful.
oh yea....the street versions of the stangs i mentioned are much cheaper priced than the vette.........so they're fighting a car that's much more expensive.....and they can still do what they need to do.
-
Kinda funny Cap that I post a link to a street driven Camaro (and yes anyone can have one built for them)
.. a monster very much so and hellya I'd drive it every day ..
..and you post drag car stuff.
Guessin I could post a top fuel link ..but .. naahh.. Ford doesn't go there.
I just enjoy a well engineered *fast* car
..already stated the reasons I dont care for Fords and will never own another one and refuse to work on 'em.
The new 'stang looks nice.
A very few of them actually run good.
The GT .. -shakes head- .. I'd rather drive a hot rod vette for that money mk thx.
Very glad I don't have to work on 'em.
AC Cobra .. it's just a damn shame Chrysler said no to Carrol's idea first.
Can you imagine what they would have been like with a 2.02 head, six pac 340 in 'em instead of that '260'
..and in '66 ..the street hemi?
And what if Chevy had said yes?
Pure animal cracker.
You know what I would enjoy seein?
Chebby takin what they have learned with the LS and buildin a Rat Motor ..an honest-to-God BIG Block
.. say .. LS firing order, 4.5" bore, 3.75" stroke w/2.35 intakes, 1.9 exhausts(similar to the Mondello Nascar head valve sizes)
.. in 'cathedral' heads, 10:1 compression, roller hydrastic cam
...in aluminum. Alla LS tricks.
Ya.. scare me :)
Sort of a modern day ZL-1 motor :)
They could do a cast iron version for their truck fleet.
NomNom's. (evil grin)
-Frank aka GE
-
..and yes ..
that bore an stroke would yield a 477ci motor.
They'd have to go with 5" bore and 4" stroke to get the BIG in big block :)
(628ci)
More bore than stroke to enable a bit of RPM.
-Frank aka GE

And more "test data" from a Mustang and Ford magazine. Probably as unbiased as the Mustang Mag that did the "race" between the Boss 302 and the Camaro with two members of their staff driving. :rofl :rofl
it is second to a z06 though. but that's ok, 'cause although the vette is a beautiful car.....this incarnation of the mustang is much much more beautiful.
Than the Vette? :rofl :rofl :rofl That's like picking Rosie O'Donnell over Kate Beckinsale!!

Not with the GT350 and GT500... those stickers are in Z06 territory....
-
well....yea. people that deal with american performance cars will know how to drive them better.
The Boss is meant to be more than a drag racer, so the suspension gets stiffer springs and bushings, a bigger rear anti-roll bar, and five-way adjustable shock absorbers, which allow the driver to tweak the Mustang's ride and oversteer/understeer balance. Staggered Pirelli P-Zero tires give the Boss 302 more than 1g of lateral grip on the skidpad. Stopping is important too, so the Boss gets bigger brakes with expansion-resistant brake lines.

Car & Driver "Lightning Lap" times (http://www.caranddriver.com/features/10q4/lightning_lap_2011-feature/sortable_times_3a_complete_lightning_lap_times_2006_to_2011_page_8)
Best lap time of any Ford Mustang tested on the VIR full course was the Shelby GT500, 28th fastest... and it could only tie the 3:04.00 lap time of the Caddy CTS-V... and was slower than the Corvette Z51, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1..... by a huge margin.
The Z06 was 9 seconds a lap faster than the GT500... and the ZR1 a whopping 14 sec a lap. Heck, the Z51 Corvette, basically the stock Vette with the sports handling package, is 5 sec quicker around the track... with FAR less horsepower than the GT500. The Ford GT was a bit quicker than the GT500, but still lagged 7 sec a lap slower than a Z06 and 11 sec a lap slower than a ZR1.
I'll be real interested to see how the big bad Boss 302 compares once they test it.... if it can even break into the top 25 times.
Looks like there are some dogs that just need to stay on the porch! :D

As its hot shoe, Ford brought 2010 Rolex 24hrs Daytona GT class winner Jonathan Bomarito, so we took the opportunity to gather some hard data on what the Boss could really do. Bomarito and the Boss knocked out two hot laps at 1:40.4 and 1:40.2.
How fast is that? Well, we compared those times against a few vehicles from our MRLS lap-time database and were astonished. With a professional racing driver behind the wheel, the 2009 BMW M3 that competed in our 2008 Best Handling competition clocked a 1:42.9. In our 2009 Best Driver's Car competition the 2010 Shelby GT500 lapped in 1:44.3 while a 2010 Audi R8 did it in 1:40.8. This puts the Boss 302 in a very elite field, and it's not the fastest Boss. According to Ford, Bomarito lapped the Boss Laguna Seca under 1 minute and 40 seconds.

oh yea....the boss302 IS being tested. every single weekend. it's kicking chevys ass, and tieing bmw. only chevy wins so far this season, have been under a full course yellow, and when the competitive stang teams were knocked out of contention from collisions. and this is where the stang is running against its direct competition, rather than going against a car that's almost always been in its own class.
keep on trying, it's fun. :aok

Drag racing IMHO is only a small fraction of what makes a car great... how it handles on real roads is the true test and Ford does not put out well in that department.

Please do not tell the Cobra folks I hang with that. I watch those $40K Cobras eat Z06's all day long, on a road course (most have Mustang suspensions, some have Jag, some have custom).
At the end of the day, it is the driver and the car. If the driver sucks, so will the car. If the car sucks, it cans till win, but only against a poor driver.
I know some damn good Cobra drivers, and I know some damn bad ones too.
For me, if I put as much into my car as it costs to purchase a Z06, I would have a Z06 eater as well. I am not sure why it is important where the car was built. Anyone can buy a Cobra, so it should count as well.
As far as the new Boss302 goes, it probably would not beat a Z06 on a track with a lot of long straights, but the Boss suspension is more than competent enough to give a Z06 a good run for the money, for a lot less than the cost of a Z06. A Boss will eat a BMW M3, on a road course. Thats good company.

According to Ford, Bomarito lapped the Boss Laguna Seca under 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Congrats on outrunning the other Mustang and two overpriced German sedans!
oh yea....the boss302 IS being tested. every single weekend. it's kicking chevys ass, and tieing bmw. only chevy wins so far this season, have been under a full course yellow, and when the competitive stang teams were knocked out of contention from collisions. and this is where the stang is running against its direct competition, rather than going against a car that's almost always been in its own class.
In all seriousness I applaud Ford Motorsport for going about the racing business and their support of road racing in this class. If Chevy showed any interest in that class racing the Camaros might be a little better competition. I still say if they want more respect they need to be showing their faces in the big leagues, though, and that means Sebring and Le Mans, and not a lower-tier feeder series.

the ford teams aren't factory backed.......at least i don't think they are. the chevy teams(the 2 that are competitive) are running 2 car teams. roush is running a single car team, as is multirmatic.
it looks like mitchum motorsports may have chevy backing.......
read this......

that is why a chevy won last week.
and the boss302 isn't just beating other mustangs.....it's beating bmw's, and chevys.

~40k for a brand new C6 .. and such.
Of course, very nicely done used are available on
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-corvettes-for-sale-98/
..from mild to wild.
CAP ..-grin- .. I useda be a dyed-in-the-wool street racer long before I discovered Air Warrior even.
There's always someone better/faster etc.
With today's toys .. a 2khp street machine with A/C and a decent stereo that can drive from LA to Phx or cruise Van Nuys or just blow some poor saps doors off ...well .. that is *nice* :)
The fact that it is wrapped in a '69 camaro shell is icing on an awesome cake .. if I win the lotto I will have something similar built,
..prolly based on a C-5 tho as I dont need no steenkeeng back seat :)

i'd keep the vette.
not that i don't like the old cars.....but i've been getting a LOT of them at the shop lately. friggin FERGET it!! the good ones from back then can't hold a candle to todays average cars.
i also do not believe that dude drives that car as a daily driver. if you talk to him long enough, you'll find out there's things he's given up, or certain things he won't do with it......not like your corvette built up, or even my mild 450hp mustang........my stang was drivin in any weather, any day/every day(cept when i had the bike out). it took me to and from work, to the r/c field, whilst full of planes, to and from florida, maryland, conniticutt, etc. and it took me down the 1/4 mile every single weekend in the low 12's. it was a true daily driver.
i would imagine when/if you build your vette, it will be much the same. well.....except you don't fly r/c, and if you did, you ain't fitting much in there. but that's ok. it'll still be your true daily driver. not something that you only drive when it's between 70F and 80F, the wind coming from the east, and it hasn't rained in at least a week, like most so called street cars are.
if i can find a way to afford a 2011 or 2012 stang, it'll be pretty easy to build that into the high 10's without giving up anything at all. and being as i'm almost old....that's what i want. :devil

just a lil something for the doubters out there.

* Ford wins its 11th NASCAR Manufacturers? Championship.
and people try to say us americans don't race real races......... :devil

the ford dealer up the street from my shop is sold out of mustang gt's. all they have there, the last time i looked, was a boss302, and 2 gt500's. if i had the money, i'd be test driving the boss
Pretend you have the money and drive it anyway :devil

Well it's a fact most boats have more horsepower than a vette.
Of course, the Queen Mary doesn't turn or stop or accelerate as well either.
The trick is gettin it hooked .. then add in turning and stopping.
Power vs weight and available tire contact patch, CG .. all that factors in.
Then the completely subjective 'cool' factor.
Mustang is just not a Vette.
-shrug-
Never will be.
Mustang does have a back seat to carry groceries in tho.
How cool is that?
LOL.

welll..since i'm kinda notorious for not letting things rest...much to the chagrin of at least 3 of yas..........i'll post a link from wildcat1's thread. :devil

and if you take the time to read, they took these things through everything from crappy roads(new york, and new jersey) to fun twisties....southern states. it seems as if there were only one place that the "cartoonish" camaro ruled....and it wasn't the twisties, or the track. :devil

the shame of this is that that dork's gonna total that car some day. was nice sounding, but you can see he's not up to that cars ability.......but he seems to think he is. he's gonna get overly cocky with it, and wrap it around a tree. and the driving gloves......he needs to lose them. :rofl
just got to the part where he crossed the intersection....looking both ways. he looks like the car salesman from true lies. :bolt: :rofl
CAP, you've obviously missed a few lessons in life.... so I figured I'd help out :old:
1. be careful what you say, you never know who's listening.
2. if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
and most importantly:
3. putting other people down won't make you any taller, or your ____ any bigger. :oak
Now, if you had ever operated anything in anger, other than a keyboard, you might understand the driving gloves a little better. Funny you should mention totaling it - while you have been working on your 17,000+ posts, I have been putting over 90,000 miles on the car, totaling it, rebuilding it, and now enjoying what you see in the video that started this thread. Just cause I say such things, don't get the idea I'm upset - not at all :D I happily invite you to stop by anytime, and see if you can handle the passenger seat, or better yet, bring anything you like, and see if you can keep up.

well......i never missed those lessons. i've always been one to say what i think, when i think it. if it offends, then it offends. it's made me unpopular in some circles, and gained me respect in other circles.
i've driven things ranging from 4 cylinder pinto stangs, and geos, up to 26k # tow trucks, and have a LOT of road hours. i've driven 600 hp cars, and 400hp cars.
perhaps there's something i missed in that video....but to me, it appeared as if that car is going to end up wrapped around a tree......and i do think it would be ashame, as it is beautiful. even if it is a chevy. :devil
oh.......and virtually everything/anything you've ever seen me type here, is the exact same thing that would come out of my mouth, in a face to face meeting. :aok
i will add that perhaps i should've said "dude" rather than "dork", but i went through that "driving glove" phase...and the fact of the matter is that i thought i myself was a dork too....and in many ways, i still am. :devil :bolt: ask anyone that knows me. there's at least one member that's met me personally. and many on here, that i'd VERY much like to meet.
