Title: 9 Years Later
Post by: BTHayze on July 21, 2011, 04:36:28 PM
 :O

I can't believe I remembered my login info!

<S> Not sure who is all still around...

I registered for and started playing AH back in 2002. I was.. 15 at the time. Wow! Yes.. that made me a squeaker. I played AH religiously. Until, one day my video card was unable to play the game for whatever reason. I have to give MAD props to Skuzzy back then.. he spent countless emails trying to help a poor kid try to get back into the game. Unfortunately, it never happened. And being a poor kid, couldn't afford to get a new rig.

Flash forward to 2011, I am now 24 and work as a system administrator supporting my companies servers/network. I still occasionally glance at the AH forums, so I guess the desire to play never really left me. But college, girls, work, girls, friends, girls, motorcycles, and girls always seemed to get in the way. My last relationship ended in April and I moved into my own place and just enjoying life. Lately, I have found myself with a ton of free time seeing I moved across the country from my family/friends.. no girls now (lame!), and no motorcycle now!

I have toyed with the idea of suiting up for some AH again, however.. I am a bit intimidated. The community seems to have taken a turn viciously. It seems every other thread is a cry of "OMG U HO'er!", people not "having honor and taking noob shots" etc. Back when I played... we flew in squads. And in our squads, we flew with wingmen. And it was all about flying in the MA with your squaddies with wingman tactics. Now.. it seems everyone wants the 1v1 in the MA? I thought that was what the DA was for? Boy am I confused. And back then- I wouldn't HO simply because it was a 50/50 chance of getting yourself downed and leaving your buddy stranded. Now, people seem to be throwing it out left and right. And based on some threads, people want to cry "HO noob/dweeb" anytime they are shot down when slightly facing someone whether it is after the 1st or 8th merge.

So question 1) .. based on today's standards in this new decade.. would I be considered a HO dweeb because I would take deflected shots? It seems now.. unless you are dead on someone's 6.. you are going to be raged against and called a HO noob/dweeb etc in 200. Nice. Oh, and of course.. I would have NO HONOR in real life because I would take a deflecting shot at someone and not being "honorable" by waiting until one of us was on the other's 6?

Question 2) Do people still fly in squads? That is one thing I miss severely about AH. The camaraderie experienced on Squad Nights. The squad I was in, Blue Thunder, flew together all the time. We had wingmen we were always paired up with. BTDiver, BTPage(aka Hanzo), BTEmilio, BTFrog, etc. We would emulate historical type of missions such as bomber escorts, base capping (which seems to be frowned on now), etc. Is this still going on at all.. or is it pretty much a "give me 1v1 fight, or I am going to cry on 200/forums"? Serious question. I enjoyed playing because of the community. But now if I am expected to up and 1v1 everything and not participate in group interactions.. Pass. No, I am not looking for random furballs, ganging, vulching, etc. Just seeing if people still practice squad combat.

Anyhow, hopefully I'll see a few people around I recognize. <S>

Go the hangar, pick your favorite aeroplane and start flying.  See what you think.  Some are in squads, some not.  Some HO, some not.

Lots of variety around, not everybody flys the same way.

First of all, welcome back.  You can check out but you can never leave.  Anyway, the game is what you make of it.  Fly for fun and ignore the small (yes I said small) percentage of bad apples that can ruin your day if you choose to let them.

See you up there,

Way

Only the extremes of the game are discussed here.  This is NOT the majority of what goes on in the game sir.  Nothing has changed, if you had fun before, I'm sure you will again.  If things people did made you miserable before, I sure they will again.  If you made friends before, you will again.

Come play, it's alot of fun.

recently I just started turning 200 off.  Although it was just a small majority of bad apples I found myself turning into one myself :uhoh So I just tune it off 200.. There are plenty of squads that work wingman tactics ,and plenty who do not.. There are plenty of things that will keep you busy :salute

Zoney's post contains all the correct info.  Sure, you've maybe got a half-dozen or dozen people yammering on 200 about the unjustness of their most recent shooting-down, but that's with 3-400 people in the arena. :)  Detuning 200 goes a long way to happiness unless you enjoy laughing at people whining.  For people blathering about whatever on the country channel, don't forget about the '.squelch guysname' command.

Being a young guy with a decent paying job, subscribe, drop some money on the gear you want, and have some fun.  I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a squad that works the way you want to.

Wiley.

Welcome back!

Yup, people still complain about HOs, especialy when they loose.  If you want to be one of the minority though, you can avoid taking them, but it's only considered a HO if both players had gun solutions on each other at the same time.  For now though, I'd just go with whatever results you're happy with, like most players, lol.

Plenty of camaraderie still too, feel free to checkout vox 152 if you're ever on the knights.

Thanks for the welcome backs guys :)

Good points made all around. Got to keep in mind the number of people who do not venture to the forums. I do believe I will dust off the old stick I have in storage and resub tomorrow. Look forward to getting shot down multiple times!

Plenty of squads will let you jump on their channel to listen and tag along with.

Have fun and check out some of the special events that are out there. See you in the unfriendly skies!

Hey I remember you BT guys from back then.  I flew with 13th TAS and Assassins that year you quit I think.

2 things.

1.  Get yourself a bike, it's summer man!

2.  Dust off that stick like you said and give AH a go now if you have the means, and ignore the community stuff.  Best thing you can do coming back IMO is detune 200 for the first few months you're back, then you won't need to worry very much about the viper-like qualities some of said "community" has adopted.  I can completely relate to a lot of the things you said in your OP, and this game is still fantastic and still without peer.  I've found that FSO has been what's kept me going this year when I can make it, and if you want to give that a whirl friday nights PM me or anybody in the FSO forums and you'll be able to get hooked up with a squad that will help you get back on the scenario horse.  Friday nights here are a complete blast, and a lot of players but in a LOT of hard work to make squad ops a good time, and it shows.

Congrats on how life has turned out for you 10 years later, take some of that success and spend the 15$, which is still a crazy value, and you are from a time when the game cost 30$ (it was 55$ here in Canada after the dollar converted out back then), so I bet you appreciate the price more,  as I do.   Come fly the sort of friendly skies, I doubt you'll regret it.

1. I agree!

2. I would tonight, but I will admit- I'm a bit nervous. It has been years. I think as far as ACM goes... I remember a Split-S. And that is about it ha. Going to be a rough road  :joystick:

<S> Yes sir!   :aok and true, I would say the vocal minority come to the forums.. most are having fun tearing it up in the skies  :airplane:

Hope to see some familiar names in the skies tonight.. and hopefully make some new ones! Depending on balance, I should be flying Rook tonight unless #s are skewed. Some of the best times I had were flying in the RJO (Rook Joint Ops) missions! Not sure if that still goes on! Hope to see some guys on tonight and maybe a couple invites tossed my way for some winging up! I am a bit dusty though..  :old:

Looking forward to climbing back in the cockpit of the F4U, F6F, and P51. My try my hand at some German iron this go around however. I always admired the 109 drivers for some reason. And one thing I miss is the thrill of attacking bomber formations for some reason. The joy I had from seeing a wing rip off of a B17 was unlike any other I had.... until I brought my first girl home to NOT meet my mother.  :devil

It's your $15/month.. play how you want.  Even though I try not to I still take a HO from time to time just for the thrill of it (I win about 80% of the time now).  Don't let the whiners bring you down they're gonna whine no matter what.  It's really not that bad it's still a really good time!  For the record I hardly ever bother to tune to 200.  It just gets me riled up and ruins my evening.  I have much more fun not tuning it in.

Question 2) Do people still fly in squads? That is one thing I miss severely about AH. The camaraderie experienced on Squad Nights. The squad I was in, Blue Thunder, flew together all the time. Serious question. I enjoyed playing because of the community. But now if I am expected to up and 1v1 everything and not participate in group interactions.. Pass. No, I am not looking for random furballs, ganging, vulching, etc. Just seeing if people still practice squad combat.

There are many, MANY squads to choose from.  PM me if you're interested I belong to a great group of guys who are committed to having fun regardless of skill or ability.  We'd love to have you!  We also have some VERY SKILLED pilots that can teach you a thing or two (or three) but if you suck all that matters is you're having fun.  Heck I've played over 5 years now and I still suck as far as I'm concerned!  We also have a history buff on board that makes FSO very interesting and a lot of fun!  It's a good time!

Arabian Knights were also really big back then as well.

Hope to see you guys on this evening. I got called back into work at 7EST last night. Our shipping app went down- and for a company that is a distributor.. no logistics = no money. So I was up all night and I am still at work :) Fixing to go home finally and hit the hay. Will be on this evening for sure with a 6 pack going to the first person to  :ahand :)

Yup, thats all FSO (Friday Squad Ops) IS, coordinated squad play ONLY=) You will have a wingman, and an historic job to do, escort BUFFS, fighter sweep, attack badBUFFs.....You must be in a squad to participate, but walkons allways welcome, cause
any squad thats under their assigned limit can let you fly with them.

Can't wait to get into some GV wars as well :)

Flew in a mission in the SEA today. Flew a group of B17s. Was a ton of fun. It was challenging keeping a tight formation and I managed to gets bombs away right before I was downed by a 109. Leveled some building. It was pretty intense... Everyone was calling check 6 on me while I was gazing down the bomber view.

The AK's....  :rock

Don't base your view of the game on what you find on the forums.  It's a vocal minority who frequently have nothing else do do but whine..

On my old squad I had a guy who always complained about people HO'ing when HO'ing was his only ACM tactic...

Sign up, have fun, fly the way YOU want to fly.  As far as 200 goes, I keep it tuned so I can watch the drama.  It's seriously funny...

WoW Hayes... Seems like reunion time.. I to am back playing after being gone for about 4-5 yrs... Started in 02 as well. I remember Blue Thunder guys.  Took a look of lead from them!!!!

I was part of the 106thVAG.  We did a lot of Bomber missions... Still looking for some of that old crew.  Chen, Booyall, krouger, man to many years gone by.  Well I'm out there... getting my tail shot up... and having a blast.  Talked a friend into joining up with me.  Currently we are using my Ventrillo server for comms just so we can chat and learn...  and lurk on the in game comms...

Anyone from those days remember me and see me out there.. give a shout.

Funny, many people would mistake my callsign and call me Dr. Baker, when it is just mdbaker...  hahaha...

See-ya in the wild blue!!!

Believe it or not, those were my initial questions just by reading the forums :)

Thankfully, as pointed out, a vocal minority cries here. Everyone ingame has been really great actually.  :aok
