I was going through a parts request over at CoolerMaster today and found this post. It is amazing what this guy did for his rig.

and I thought I was somewhat overkill with my simpits! Now I know I have room to continue to build rediculous stuff.

Every guy needs a hobby.
Jeeeeeeeez thats dedication.
Or is it "obsession"????
-
i want what he spent on parts for the PC, not the custom box.. the CPU, water cooling, graphics, PSU...everything but the box. the price for the box would be a perk :O
-
thats awesome.
when are you going to move?lol
-
At the point of drilling holes to the floor it would have been much wiser to place the whole computer under the floor and pull only dvi, usb etc. cabling to the surface.
Super clean, super quiet and simple.

But then you can't show it off.

Yeah I guess it depends if you plan to use the computer or have guided tours through your house to see it. :)

Hi,
You are the guy that got me hooked on DCS: Warthog since February. Just bought into their Black Shark. Just what I need, another addiction...
My Cooler Master 700 watt PSU and their V8 supercooler have been flawless for over a year.
My next home built system will be about $2500. Darn GTX 580 is $500!
$8,000 is about right for the super-addicted.
My desk is probably 100 years old, solid oak, with dual side. top, pull outs whatever they are called. It is like an executives desk for typing.
I just made a modular, wooden top insert to cover the top, center drawer, with velcro to hold down my Fighterstick. I pull the drawer a little ways out so keyboard is right there. My desk for gaming also doubles as my computer workbench for building new PCs. Saw a photo of this desk here to forums, a guy had the same desk.
Wow, is this guy like the guy in Brazil that built a 747 cockpit in his spare bedroom? He had like 8 monitors.

I read that whole thread and I'd prefer one of your simpits over what he built. :)

What a beautiful thing. That is a work of art. :aok :salute
-
Very elaborate, but not a desk.
It's an installation. It's a permanent fixture. It's not very ergonomic, nor is it very practical. So yes, a work of art, but a convoluted and overly complicated (complicated simply for the sake of being complicated, I'd say) piece of art.
You can't move it or move anything with the computer. Might as well have built a Cray mainframe case with gamer PC parts inside it. That would be just as useful/practical as the link above.
-
Krusty while I agree that it doesn't look very ergonomically sound in its layout perhaps it is just right for him. Not something I would do and he probably doesn't do a whole lot of gaming but on the other hand why else would you drop in the hardware that he has if you don't game some small amount.
Did you guys notice the sound card he dropped in there? Just the sound card pushed $250USD by itself but it looks like he has the XSense package with the way the sound card looks. http://www.guru3d.com/news/asus-and-sennheiser-work-together-on-xonar-xense-one-premium/ Which was a $350 package last fall.

Excess for the sake of it. He won't ever use a fraction of that card's potential in that rig. He's got headphones for crying out loud! Might as well take a freight train to transport a cup of coffee.

I know exactly what you mean. I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of coin on a soundcard. I had a bad enough time accepting the headphones my parents gave me for Christmas which are the PC360 Sennheisers; I love 'em but I am not going to spend that much money on headphones for myself.

I just can't respect that kind of waste shown in that build. I don't know if it listed the total (I was skimming) but I bet he wasted more than $20,000 on a computer that will be obsolete in 3 years. Cars cost less and last longer. Especially with the intent of the project. The intent was only to brag. Virtual "measuring contest" I suppose? There is no purpose to that setup. He doesn't have mix boards. He doesn't have 6 monitors for massive multi tasking or video editing or any number of other things. He's just wasting money to show that he has money and time to waste.
It's one thing to SPEND money, but it's another to WASTE money. Especially in but not limited to these bad times.

Thanks!
I think I am at the total opposite end of the scale from this guy, as I build these frames (especially the red one) to be the most simple versatile piece of home "hardware" I can build. These frames will last forever, are easily assembled with a small crescent wrench in about 15 minutes and take up about 15 square feet of floor space. They can be used as a computer work station(i'm working in the red one right now), a personal home theater, a console gaming station and of course a really comfortable racing/flight simulator. As technology changes, simply upgrade your computer. They are super easy to move around and can be completely enclosed. My next project will incorporate the red frame into a loftbed setup for dorm room/condominium/small space living.
That being said, I am very impressed with that guys work and skill, although I tend to agree it is way overkill and a large waste of money for the functionality and limited uses he will get out of it. I can build a complete red style frame for about $1000.00 - $1200.00 depending on shelving options.

This guy looks like he makes big bucks. HE probably spends $250/month on coffee. :D

that desk is sick....period...why he made it is moot.....what he does with it is moot.....how much it costs is moot......it was his money, his time, his work, his idea's, none of that matters for it was not YOUR money he was "wasting".....I think it is pretty darn sick, and besides the fact that he did an awesome job on the work, he should be praised just for that.
-
No more praised than somebody that buys a 2012 Ferrari then smashes it to pieces with a sledge hammer.
You don't praise people for reckless opulence. You praise them for shrewdness, or for wisdom, for perhaps balancings needs vs wants and coming out ahead in both categories, etc.

your comparison is slightly off(ive noticed you do that often).......one...he designed and built it...didn't BUY it and then destroy it........TWO he did an absolutely AWESOME job on it, whether you think it was a waist or not does not diminish the fact that HE built that awesome piece of art that is a computer and a sick one at that, from scratch, there is so much "shrewdness" as you said, in that desk......its insane.
do I personally think its a waist of money...yup.......but that is the whole point..ITS HIS MONEY.....he made a sick computer/desk/art deco piece and should be praised for that.
-
He's gonna land so much sweet tail with that thing. I mean serious amounts, way more than if he were to drive a Ferrari.
errrm wait :headscratch: maybe not.
Nice craftsmanship anyway. :aok

Agree 100%.

It is no more supidier (ha) than us spending hundred of dollars more than what is needed to max out ah.

That desk is awesome and he wanted something unique, he got it. I guess me spending close to 3000 on my computer is wasteful too huh??? I wanted what I wanted and built it myself and am happy for now till I do some more mods to it. LOL yes semp I said I am doing more mods... look for the updated pics in the future.

Karaya, Ink,
I don't deny there is skill involved. He's certainly smart and tech savvy in the ways of building and fabrication. However it is not art deco. It's excess for the sake of excess. Not to be confused with, say, paying to upgrade a PC because you're going to run a lot of stuff on it, or some heavy high-end stuff. It's not even excess with the intent of breaking overclocking limits and earning fame/acclaim that way. It's simply extravagence. Shrewdness is more than that.
No my Ferrari comment wasn't a direct comparison, but it was a tale of wasted money and that's how I meant it to relate.
I think "intent" plays a part in whether it's praise worthy or not. If ask: Why do this, and the answer is: "Because it is the best way to do X or Y" that is one thing. If the answer is "Just because," it lacks aim, direction, or focus. In this latter case is where I'd lump this desk.
There's a socio-cultural aspect to it to, I suppose.

i think it was more like a challenge to him than the money.

Krusty, perhaps your missing a crucial point. WE may think whatever we will about what he's done (personally, I see the beauty of it, but I do see the excess)and the money he's spent to build it. However if one spends $10,000 to $15,000 on an item, what's that to a millionaire? Case in point, Tom Cruise and his P-51 "Kiss Me Kate"? Wouldn't this be a case of "excess for the sake of excess"? Matter of opinion I guess, but suffice it to say, whether or not the rest of us may consider it a waste, art, creative endeavor or a vulgar display of wealth, the point is both he and T.C. can afford their whims?
I suspect that if any one of us here had the disposable incomes that either of these two had, we would have the very best for our systems also! So, is it a show of excess, to most of us, probably in both cases. But like humans everywhere, most of us tend to buy/use the best we can afford, regardless of whether or not some may consider it excess.

Saying that this guy's creation is a waste of money, time, or effort, or that it doesn't make sense.... is nonsense. If it makes sense to him, he likes it, and it fits his needs/wants, that is ALL that matters.
Saying this guy's creation is dumb is like saying a person is stupid for buying a Ferrari when they could have had a Kia instead, 'cause they'll both get you from point A to point B, and the Kia will do it for far less money.
If that's you logic, then that's fine. It's your opinion, and we all know what opinions are like. :)
