I am a glider pilot student and just thought i would bring it up and how awesome it is :rock
Saturday helped put together my clubs new Schweizer 2-33 but i have been learning on a Grob 103 (much sexier and sleeker :D)
Anyways if you've never flown a few stalls with no engine it is awakening and one hell of a time! Go to ssa.org and you can find a glider organization near you most of which will offer some form of intro flight where a commercial rated pilot will take you up and might give you the stick for a bit. Anyways if you've thought about flight school but cant afford it try soaring its much cheaper. :airplane:
Hopefully i will solo in a few weeks at the age of 15 :D Then for my 16th b-day i plan on getting my private pilot liscence :x :x :x

cool! we have a powered glider on base and the thing is massive.
-
nice :aok
I never flown a glider, been planning to do it for a year now, hopefully soon I'll get a chance.

Flown a glider a few times...
Once in a 152...couple times in a 182 and couple times in a 206. :D

:lol Oximoron?
I think so.

That's not exactly what I had in mind. :) Well, I'm glad you made it back.

That will be the clubs next addition so we can practice touch and go's since you hopefully only land once per flight in a glider :D
Although i have gotten 2 landings off a bounce once :devil

You'll be amazed by the differences in glider flight then powered flight. :aok

Powered gliders often only have an engine strong enough to keep them up not for take-off per say. And many actually fold up into the fuselage when not in use

im sure you've seen that before.

dizzying thermal with barely any lift, and a shot of the field

How long is that tow rope? :headscratch:
Most thermals we get are fairly strong and we have easily climbed from 2000 to 4000 in about 10-15 minutes

the rope is about 60-70 ft i think.you can see a UFO under the left wing of the towplane, and if u look past the towplane you can see a runway, those Predator drones takeoff and land there.
that thermal was weak.i think it was only about 300 ft of + lift and it was moving everywhere.once it disapated i went looking for another and couldnt find one.I remembered a landmark of where that thermal was and went back to try to catch it again.but the whole way to it was about -600 sink.i got to where that thermal was and it was -800.
after that i was 1600 AGL and had to put er down.

thats about 3 secs before the wheels hit the ground.I had to hurry up and snap this one

I know, I was just laughing at the 'powered glider' because if it were a 'true' glider, it would have no power.
:P

Hmmmm we use 200 ft long ropes and that towplane looks pretty far away... :headscratch: It may be the camera but no biggie.
Where are you out at? Im in NW florida

I intend on getting my glider add-on to my private when I get it in september. I got a free glider ride becasue I do alot of wingrunning for the san antonio soaring society. The only glider flight I've been on in Texas..... I got a 3200ft gain in a 20 minute flight. We were up at 7200'.
Of course, when there are 2 Dave White's in a single glider good things are bound to happen.

(They call us double Dave)

Yea unfortunately im only 15 so no drivers liscence and teh gliderport is an hour away so I dont get to hang out at the airport as much as i want (which would be everyday we have ops :lol)

acutally, most powered gliders can take off all on their own. However, there are some that only have an engine that is powerful enough to allow them to climb out slowly or stay level.
I believe what is based on my field is a Schleicher ASH-26 or an ASH-25Mi. It was really wide, so im thinking it might have been the ASH-25mi.
I was looking at powered gliders in search to see if i could identify what is on our field and this seemed to be a pretty good article even though it was from wiki.

Did not know that thanks :aok All I know of them is the limited material from my "bible" I have yet to see one but would be great for practice

Thats a Pipistrel Virus, our airports new motorglider for rent. Dave White is flying the Virus, and the other Dave White (Me) is flying the cub. (The plane the picture was taken from)
It's got an 80hp Rotax 912 and cruises at 115 knots. The short wing version is "experimental" and cruises at near 150 knots. (All at 4.8GPH)

Very cool does it handle like a normal glider like rudder usage wise?

I'd imagine after you turned off the motor it would, but with the engine running it probably handles like any LSA

Soaring is the thing. It is so much more interesting than powered flight. Following the flock of birds during migration season is an amazing experience - it is also lazy since the are exceptional at finding the thermal winds :)
I took some lessons, but I do not have the time required to put into it since around where I lived I was required to join the souring club and spend long hours during the weekend operating the strip etc. in addition to actually flying . I did not have that amount of time to dedicate to it. It is definitely on my top list of things to do when the kids grow up a bit.

Thats cool sir, I just hate when yall are up as the same time as us. dam thing are so hard to see. and over here in Germany they dont talk to anyone. make VFR a bit hectic....

I've always wanted to fly gliders, sure it lacks the power but they are so cool!

Where they lifting out of?
-
Its definitely awesome to thermal with 2 or three falcons but unfortunately they turn faster then we do even in a 60 degree bank :airplane:
I think the biggest advantage is the price soaring cost me about $60 bucks per 45 mins of flight
