(damn thats a long link)
CHICAGO (AP) — Myrtle Rose was taking a short flight over suburban Chicago when the 75-year-old aviation enthusiast looked out her cockpit window to see two F-16 fighter jets. She assumed the military pilots were just slowing down to get a closer look at her antique plane.
It wasn't until she landed her 1941 Piper J-3 Cub that friends and the police told her the attention was much more serious — for straying into restricted airspace during a visit by President Barack Obama.
Rose, who tries to fly every day when weather permits, said she had been itching to get back in the air Wednesday after a number of days on the ground. She normally uses her computer to check for airspace restrictions, but it wasn't working properly.
"I hadn't flown in over a week," she said. "It was a beautiful afternoon." After some guests departed her home, she "just climbed in the airplane and left."
To make matters worse, she said, "I didn't have my radio on. I was just flying around."
On any other day, the brief flight would never have attracted notice. But Obama was in Chicago for a fundraiser marking his 50th birthday.
"There's really no excuse for not knowing," said Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which scrambled the two warplanes, a proposition that costs $9,000 an hour for each jet. "Anyone who flies an aircraft should know the restrictions."
Rose said she was about 30 miles from O'Hare Airport when her plane was intercepted. As the fighters appeared, she wasn't alarmed.
"I thought, 'Oh, well, they're just looking at how cute the Cub is," she said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. The blue-and-yellow plane had won a best-in-class award at the Oshkosh Air Show, a huge annual gathering in Wisconsin.
Another NORAD representative suggested Rose had no business thinking that a military jet racing toward her would be in any way related to the cuteness of her plane.
"The biggest thing to keep in mind is that when F-16s come screaming up to you, they are probably trying to tell you something," spokeswoman Stacey Knott said.
Rose, who has been flying since the mid-1960s and even performed as a wing walker until five or six years ago, said the jet pilots could not have been more considerate.
Though she never saw their faces — hard to do, she said, since she was puttering along at about 60 mph and the jets were doing what she figured was about 300 mph — she was impressed with the way the pilot who pulled in front of her kept his distance to avoid rattling her wood-and-fabric plane.
"He was very respectful," she said.
Rose returned to land on the grass airstrip at her home in the affluent South Barrington area. Her late husband owned Rose Packing Co., a meat packer that supplies Canadian bacon to McDonald's restaurants.
Once she was on the ground, some friends rushed over and told her that the rendezvous had nothing to do with the good looks of the plane named Winston. After the aircraft was in the hangar, her yard began filling with police cars.
Rose said she filled out a report with the Federal Aviation Administration, including a note describing how she mistakenly believed the jets were circling to admire her plane. She said she has not heard from the agency.
FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said the investigation would probably take several weeks. Penalties could include a fine or a suspension of her pilot's license, or the agency might not take any action at all.
Rose, a Republican who said she did not vote for Obama, joked about mailing the president a note for his birthday.
"Oh, dear, maybe I should send him a belated birthday card and say, 'You should have stayed home and Michelle baked you a birthday cake.'"
Rose said she does have a bone to pick with NORAD, or whoever released the information about her close encounter with the jets.
"The worst part is they put my age in there," she said. "I don't think that was nice."
Now seriously fellas.. I think we can agree the bolded parts ... are a woman thing :)
-
all i read was the bloded parts..and icould tell it was a woman :rofl
-
i thout this was going to be about that CCCP ace
-
Props to her for flying, and at 75 too, but that's some world-class stupid right there.
-
Another terror threat thwarted. Thank the almighty we are safe for another day!
-
a radio is not required though.....although familiarizing yourself with all available info on your flight is.

This is quite true. 91.103 IIRC

phewww! i wasnt looking foreward to breaking out THAT book again....
-
the sad part is that this poor woman is probably gonna have her cert. revoked.
-
whole lotta BS over one guy..... could only imagine what the Falcon guys were thinkin when they go to her.
"are you serious, its an old lady ina wicker plane.........."

what would have made it better is if she had goggles on and a white scarf

they did the same crap with his predecessor. hell.......i remember someone launching out of south jersey regional during the previous administrations term. dood didn't check tfr's, and they met him with a couple f16's..i think out of atlantic city.
then there was the line checker(i think that's what they call em), that came out of ohio, was flying low in his 172, paralleliing rt95 north...heading right for the motorcade. he was met with blackhawks, state police choppers, and i think there may have been a jet. they escorted him to camden county airport, which is only 5 miles or so from my home.

Some people have short memories. It was a small plane loaded with extra gasoline that crashed into a Texas building:made a terrible mess and iirc killed some people.

and how often does that happen?

The point is the same. The rules are what they are, and they aren't going to take any chances regardless if folks like or dislike the president at the time when the airspace violation occurs. That it was a sweet little old lady in an antique bird, is irrelevant.

i know, and fully understand.
i do feel bad for her though, in that she will lose her license. they won't use enough common sense to realize that she didn't pose a threat.
this also(as mentioned)isn't unique to the current cic. it happened at least 2x just here in the nj/philly area under the previous cic. in fact, i saw the f16's fly over my shop on the way to intercept one of them.

On the parts of the government? Yes, I agree
-
It's not like she violated a Military operations area.
The airspace she's flown for the last 20 years became a restricted area on short notice.

Which is why it is the responsibility of the PIC to check NOTAM's before each flight.
Every flight.
No exceptions. Not even when your computer is broken. Not even if you don't have a radio.
If you cannot check the conditions or airspace restrictions where you are planning to fly, stay on the ground.
End of story.
-
I fly in MOAs all the time. I don't have a choice though, because all of south central Texas is one big MOA. Now if she flew into prohibited or restricted airspace that would be a little bit different.
Of course if they didn't put a 50 mile wide TFR up wherever POTUS goes this wouldn't be a problem.
-

and on her part too. really, in todays world, there is no excuse to not know about a tfr....and there's generally plenty of notice.

it is every pilots obligation to become famalier with ALL facets of their flight. this would include checking for tfr's, and notams. they generally give enough notice before a tfr goes into effect.

in fact, the broken computer is a suck asd excuse......i always called on the phone to check when i was up in the air more.

i fly out of N14 when i go up. i think once you've gone about a mile east of that runway, you're in mcguires moa. you're generally good, unless you brake the bases airspace.......

I'm not so sure. I doubt that the current administration will want to risk having this sweet older lady appearing at republican political rallies. I can hear the, "Soft on terrorism" quotes as they display the Lady as what the administration thinks is a terror threat.
I rather expect that on the administrations request, the FAA will give her a slap on the wrist and hope it all goes away.

It is also every ones obligation to not freak out and over react to everything. If that plane had other intentions its mission would have been completed before the ridicules over reaction of scrambling F16s. It is all about keeping the fear going and has nothing to do with any ones protection. When a guy flew his plane into a building here in Austin last year the F16s did not even know it happened until after the flames were out.
Give me one example where these ridicules measures have actually stopped someone from doing something. They only server to keep the fear alive and at best to cause accidents and legal problems for people.

i understand that, and agree. like i said....i saw the f16's fly over my shop otw to intercept a menacing cessna 152 out of kvay.
it is our responsibility to not give them ammunition to do this silly stuff though.
that being said......i'm with the old lady on this one. there is no requirement to have her radio on, and in fact, the couple people i know that have piper cubs don't even have radios in them.
she should have called flight services though. she really should have.

And if they'd ignored it and not responded and something had happened, can you imagine the crisis that would have become? I'd suggest it's a no win situation. And I'm guessing the reaction here is stronger then it will be towards the little old lady in regards her license. It was an honest mistake. The "investigation' will show this, and everyone will go on their merry way.

As I said, show me one example where these out of proportion measures, stopped anyone from doing anything. It is a minimal risk you take in order to have a normal life.
Strip searching everyone before leaving home and having them provide with a traveling plan with destinations, purpose, and arrival time would bring crime down to nothing. But, I am willing to take the risk and not have those measures in place. You?
-
guppys point was "what if"?
would you want to be the commander on watch, if something happened in your area to the cic, all because that blip was only a piper cub?
i wish it weren't like it is, but the fact of the matter is that it is. it sucks.

:rofl How is it guys? It is not like it cant be undone (still waiting of an example where these measures did stop something btw). watermelon happens every day. The only way to stop it is to stay locked in your house with a camera attached on your arse. :lol Why can;t anyone understand that by the time they give the order to scramble the F16s the damage will be done? The cub can fly at tree level no problem so no blip will be seen. Why is everyone willing to give up everything for a false sense of security?

I don't know about anyone else, but that is not what I am saying at all.
The rules do not make me feel any safer. If I do not abide by them however, the FAA will strip my flight privileges to a point where I cannot even fly a RC plane.

what he said. i don't feel any better about them......but if i wanna fly, i need to follow them.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Sadly in our current climate the powers that be have to over do it. If not, the lawsuits come out in droves.
Best example I can use is Social Services, having worked in it for so many years. The services get cut, the rules backed off, not as many workers. All is well, then BAM! Some kid gets horrifically abused or killed and folks go crazy wondering why no one was paying attention. The system then reacts, starts spending more money, being more watchful and then it becomes too much cost, invasion of privacy, etc. and the cycle repeats itself.
We've been in that bad guys around every corner mode now since 9/11 and the paranoia runs deep, which means we over react to everything.

uumm.....me making a phone call to flight services is not giving up anything except about 45 seconds of my time, in return i get to know exactly what's going on in the airspace i'm about to fly in. or at the airport i'm going to.

Yep, and if you forget, the proper reaction is scrambling F16s :rofl Next, you will have to call the police station before leaving your home to give them your route and ask if anyone important maybe shopping at your local store. If you forget, swat teams should be send asap.
It sounds like we all kind of agree, but I don;t understand what or who the powers that be are. Shouldn't that be us, in a free country? Why can;t we vote on it?
