Yesterday I gave world of tanks a try for the first time and noticed a few thing's they are doing that we could do here for more overall tank enjoyment.
First off let me say I hope AH's tank fights never become exactly like WOT.
Wot had 6,000 players on yesterday, think about that kind of battle.
First we could create a tank only area like WW1 arena and call it something like Tank Wars.
In this arena we could have 1 map to begin with that has all the little tanking goodies, towns, burnt out towns with debris fields, bridges (not so many restrictions on what goes in as long as each side has fair terrain)
If possible see if we could make detroyable objects and soft objects like small trees and bushes able to be driven through.
No airplanes whatsoever or only scouting planes, but they would have to fly through puffy ack to do so.
Only 2 sides and MA perks don't carry over so everyone starts out on an equal playing field.
There could be a set time every day where an objective is given such as capture the flag game starts at 6pm till 9PM
If any AVA map creators cared to try to create a fun map would be nice.
No drive times longer than 2 minutes to reach action/instant fun.
I think if we took alot of the WOT aspects and put them into an AH platform without the "WOW" lameness and no skill needed point click and pray random penetration stuff....we could have a greater tank game.
As of now tanking is fun but we never see large battles in MA due to ,bombs, long drives, and generally stag net terrain.
Yeh or Neh?
-
+/- 1. I think it wouldn't see much action except from the really dedicated GV'ers. If theres no real goal to generate fights, people won't leave the MA.
-
Then why are there so many people playing WOT? There is no goal there except to grind your way to a good tank.
-

probably because its free. I haven't run into more than a bare handfull of simm-players in there.
-
+1. but this would be alot better off in the wishlist :aok another cattle for skuzzy to budge :D
also in WOT ive been taking up SPG's lately...kind of fun, brings a whole new meaning of "reaching out and touching someone" as you can hide in a bush and wreck a tiger with a M27 and he cant do crap about it :t if anyone ever wants to roll with me my name ingame is skorpion777

Let me see.... well, it is called Ace's High
Aces High takes the art and science of vintage WW1 and WW2 air combat and sets it in a high intensity online multiplayer environment. Hundreds of players simultaneously battle it out against each other in massive aerial dogfights and bomber raids.
As this is an air combat game first I would like to see them devote their time to bringing us more planes or revamping the current ones. Wouldnt mind seeing a new map or two or even coming up with a new strat and capture system.

With over 100 warbirds, vehicles, and boats available, you have access to a vast virtual arsenal.
Take part in special events such as historical scenarios where famous battles are recreated and reimagined or try your hand at air racing at tree top level against skilled competitors.
In the air, on land, and at sea, the battle rages 24 hours a day with participants from around the world. Take our free two week trial and find out why Aces High is the online game for you.

Personally, I didn't come here to drive GV's around, so to be selfish, No.
Do people play World of Tanks to fly airplanes around?

ok, if people didnt come to drive gv's then why do we have them? maybe because some people did come to drive them.

We have them because people thought "hey, it would be great if we could have tank fights in here too!". They didn't come here thinking that this was the place to be for ground combat.

All the usual silly it's called "Aces High" comments aside the GV game in AH is important to me. However history has shown that specialized arenas do not pull the numbers. I have no reason to believe that a GV only arena would be any different. So a better solution to stimulate the ground game is needed.

+1 on all that.
I would like to see more areas in the MA maps that promote ground battles and make it harder to bomb them in those areas. Maybe some very low level dense cloud cover, say 1k???
-
I think we should get rid of the Wirbelwind. That would really help with the bombing problem. :)
-
AH could never compete with WoT head to head. Totally different game genre. But I dont think HTC wants to compete H2H with WoT anyway..... What AH should do is pull the good ideas and try to create more new ones. They have obviously pulled some good ideas, and the exterior tank art in AH is, imo, superior to the art in WoT. Also, AH provides turret rotation sounds and that gets a big plus from me (adding a gun elevation gear munching sound would top it off nicely for me in that regard).
What I would like to see, and where AH could really improve, is with the terrain and the interaction of the terrain with the vehicle. Terrain that folds, dips and rises in a more realistic manner is really sorely needed...as well as objects that provide a more believable collision event. Also, add some shake to the tank like we get in the cockpits (especially when a round impacts). That would be a nice add as well.
I used to dislike how the airplane weapons ballistics translated down into the heavy caliber tank gun ballistics, but I suspect HTC has that area down a lot better than I originally felt about it.

Isnt that game free?

There is the ability to create custom rooms now, you can have the dedicated GV arena you crave.

yep
Then that's why there are 6000 players

AH doesnt need anymore rooms to split the population than it has now. And the key to improving the tank aspect of the game is not to remove the historical threats it faced. It needs to improve the strategic aspects of this game and quit pandering to the "I WANT MY ______ UPDATED" wieners.
If spawn points didnt show up on the map and players actually had to recon an area to locate the enemy ground forces, then you wouldnt get bombed so much.
-
the only thing about wot that caught my attention as "cool" was the damage you could see on a blown up tank. there are a just a few variations per vehicle depending on what knocked it out, but it was enough to catch your eye. in all other aspects it's mario tank. isn't the most people you can have in a battle something like 30?
there's the answer for the op.

If you all say so....I know alot of AH's players enjoy gv'ing and I know it could be alot better easily.
Or we can continue waiting for every 3rd map to come up that has 1 good spawn.
And we will never see numbers over 600 people online at once again.
Oh well. :)

I started a similar thread looking to improve GV'ing.
http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,318871.0.html (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,318871.0.html)
I would be interested in a GV-only arena but I don't see that happening. Too many people want to fly once in a while. They also have friends and squads that are always in the Late War arena and won't want to leave them. There just won't be enough people dedicated enough to get any decent numbers in a GV-only arena.
I think a good solution is better maps and no icons for GV's. We have a few maps that facilitate good GV battles but too many that don't. There is no reason the maps can't be edited to facilitate GV battles without affecting air combat at all.

Why not get rid of the bombs? That would really help the tankers. :)
-
Make your own GV oriented arena; if it gets enough attention night after night, I'll bet good money HTC will implement a tank only arena.
Custom arenas are great for allowing HTC to see what is popular, truly a market tool.

The river towns on the TwinRivr terrain were made specifically for tank battles if anyone is interested. The bridges are even destroyable.

and many of Great Tank Battles have taken place on this Map Already. Short drives to town and you even even range the other countries base's from the other side of the River. So for all the Gv Lovers out there this would be a good map to use

Will it cost them anything to add this arena to just see what happens, btw this map looks great.
I know people would go there its instant action people are impatient.

ok, if people didnt come to drive gv's then why do we have them? maybe because some people did come to drive them.
Nope, it's because it gives the cartoon pilots something to bomb and thus generate combat.

the twinrivr map was made by ranger for the ava, one of the three sides is stuck in a corner with nothing but strats and a base, the rest of the map is divided between two other sides, and the map is very small. it won't work in the main arenas.

OK, I give, what's a PJ ?

Would love to see a much smaller map exclusively for GV only ....NO aircraft.
-
Twinrivr is available on the terrain selection list when hosting a custom arena. It can give you an idea of what can and will be made for gv battles when we are able to upload custom terrains for private servers soon. I have a couple already made. A GV only arena really belongs in the custom arenas until its proven it would be worth HTC's while. And of course there's always Heavy Metal Sunday events.

Glad you think its silly. Maybe you ought to think about things before you comment. The GVs are here so the A/C can fulfill all their rolls. While they have made changes and expanded the ground game to make it more fun for those that prefer the 2d fight it doesn't change the fact that the GVs are there to add more targets. You want a dedicated tank game then look else where.
-
Jappa, maybe you ought to think about things before you comment.
Aces High stopped being a flight simmulator at the very instant the first non aircraft mounted, player-opperated weapon was added. Since that time, its been a combat simmulator with an emphasis on aerial combat. Hell, even calling this game a simmulator is a strech. If it was a true simmulator, even just starting your engine and talking off would be a lengthy complex procedure.
Now stop this bull-s***, and just admit GV's deserve something as well.

Today....downloaded WOT......played WOT........deleted WOT within 10 minutes. Now I would like to see a GV arena in AH tho :salute

yes it would , it takes time , effort and expertise to set up new arena's . they don't just happen . if you could show the good folks at HTC compelling evidence that they would show a profit ( increased subs )by doing this i'm sure they would jump on the idea quickly . i don't have much opinion either way unless it takes away from other established areas the game. in that case i would say no .

Yeah I don't get the point of this thread since it's easy enough to just create one.

Maybe you ought to read what you are about to comment on. First I said it's important, not the most important thing. Second, I do not want nor did I ask for a dedicated tank game. Not sure where you came up with that. I spend about 25% of my time in GV's so I would say it is of importance to me, but not my over-riding concern. Simmer down sparky... :aok

As of now tanking is fun but we never see large battles in MA due to ,bombs, long drives, and generally stag net terrain.
I'd like some terrain where I don't have to worry about driving through Stag Nets. Those things can really screw up your tank and, if they don't check 'em regularly, the stags die in 'em and stink and you know what that means... Yep, the crate and barrel people line up thinking it's dinner time.
Kidding, kidding...

I also play World of Tanks and would like to see a tank area, It would have far more people playing than WWl. There is soon to be a World of Aircraft.
WORLD OF TANKS CLAIMS TO HAVE 6 MILLION PLAYERS world wide now
-
at lest with AH you dont have to pay lots of money to get good tanks all you have to do is earn a few free perk points.
World Of Tanks you have to buy points or somthing like that to get the good tanks. one of my squadies just came back from WOT because he ended up spending 400-500 bucks from April 2011 to Aug 2011
WoT what a rip off i love the GV game AH has and i can up a fighter. cant do that with WoT
-
moin
aces high is still perfect and wot is just wasting time because your are fighting for nothing.
but i understand the whish for a tank arena were no lancs stukas kann kill the gv fight.
but it will not work because a singel arena only for tanks mens the fight there is sensless, because the real fight beatween the 3 countrys are still in the latwar. we will just dreg away a few tank guys out of the lat arene were we will miss them.
my choice to handel this il-2, stuka, jabo problem for the gvs would be to at a perked 88 gun, with that gun you are able to cam the jabos and the gvs would have a much nicer time to fight his fight.
but for that you need a bit of team play thats all.

WoT is not at all what I would like to see HTC become. I find WoT to be as gamey as can be with eye-candy and "power-ups" being the main goal.
I think the tank combat in HTC is more "realistic". With that said, the big area that could be improved upon is not so much the tanks themselves but the environment in which the tanks do combat in. First, the terrain is too smooth. There is no mud. There is no sand. No fog (or rather very little near ports, but in general there is none). There are too many constant variables that should not be, imo. However, just how deep can the coding be taken and just how much work it will take to add in anomalies that add environmental/immersion changes only HTC really knows.
-
Again, a separate gv arena is not the answer. IF it did actually become popular and take even a small portion of the population away from the main arenas, it would detract from the air war and the game in general.
All you guys are asking for is EASY MODE. Grow up. Take the challenge you were given and if it is not a fair challenge then look for ways to balance it out not ways to ruin the game.
If being bombed bothers you so much, then maybe you should ask for something like a percentage of free gv accounts that only allow access to AA vehicles. That would make the air war more challenging and give you some breathing room.
Or how about a better strategic game, or removing icons from vehicles.
Use your heads, not xbox ideas.
-

You know... that's not a terrible idea... About the only issue I could see with it would be it would be like having dozens of ManaWar clones... Maybe limit their access to channels? <g>

Increasing the number of GV spawns would go a long way. Whenever a Pacific map (islands) comes up it leaves very few GV battles. The larger islands will have a couple of bases and a spawn or two but there is no way to get from island to island. This is logical because tanks can't cruise across the water but it hurts game play for the GVers. Having 1 or 2 spawns into and out of every GV base could really open things up.
To help with bombing, altering the icons would help. Have a nondescript "GV" icon pop up at 1.5K, at 1K you get the type of GV, then at ~600 you get the range to the GV. I think this would make the approach and timing of the drop more difficult while still allowing the planes to spot GVs without an unnecessary level of difficulty.
-
MAYBE A TANK ARENA ISN'T THE PERFECT SOLUTION, BUT WHATI'M TRYING TO GET ACROSS IS THAT WE COULD HAVE MUCH MORE FUN WITH SOME TWEAKING.
MAYBE THIS MEANS THERE WILL BESS LESS GV'S FOR AC TO BOMB BUT IF THERE BOMBING IS KEEPING THE ACTION TO A MINIMUM WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING.
IT'S NOT JUST BOMBING I HIGHLITED OTHER ISSUES IN MY ORIGINOL POST AS WELL. IF WE UPDATED THE MAPS IN THE MA I THINK WE WOULD SEE MORE PLAYERS OUT AND ABOUT.
AS OF RIGHT NOW THE LARGEST TANK BATTLE WE SEE IS 20V20.
MAKE A TRUE TANK TOWN WITH UNIQUE TERRAIN AND SHORT DRIVES AND WE MIGHT SEE NUMBERS GROW....AH COULD EASILY BEAT WOT ON GAMING SATISFACTION BECAUSE FRANKLY WOT SUCKS.
PEOPLE SAY WOT IS SUCCESFUL BECAUSE IT'S FREE, BUT IT ISN'T FREE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GRIND YOUR WAY TO THE TOP WHICH TAKES TIME AND FRANKLY ISN'T FUN. FOR 15$ PEOPLE COULD COME PLAY AH AND HAVE ACCESS TO GOOD TANKS QUICKLY AND BETTER GAMEPLAY.
-
And the reason I suggested a Tanking arena was because the MA maps aren't very good for tanking, there are only a few places with interesting terrain.
An arena by itself would be able to use custom maps like rangers...that would NEVER fly in the MA....
And updating the MA maps to be more gv friendly would take more work then making a new arena.

See, we need a persistent battlefield so that you'd have rubble from bombed out buildings, not to mention wrecked aircraft strewn about. You can get concealment and cover in that stuff.

Nope, it's because it gives the cartoon pilots something to bomb and thus generate combat.
Imagine if they re-did the Ground Vehicle war in Aces High to stop bombing them so easy to bomb and actually a tool to fight with?
You'd have some pretty good GV fights for once.

I don't know if its that cubic zirconia rock you wear on your ear that is preventing you from comprehending but there is already two arenas you can use USRanger's custom GV terrain...in the AvA and get this...Player Created Custom Arenas. there are only a few places with interesting terrain.
That right there is the problem, but the comment isnt accurate. 80% of the ground terrain doesnt get used.
Quit looking for solutions that include keeping the spawn and die fights of the last 15 years and look for ways that allow a better game. Like a way to use ALL of the terrain instead of the ridiculous spawn system we have now.
Wars mean fighting your way into enemy territory. If there were a matrix of spawn points all over the map at approximately the same distances from each other as they are now then there could be a front line style fight where each country had to push his way across every mile of terrain.
There wouldnt be battles at the same spawn points week after week. There wouldnt be a little yellow arrow that essentially says ---> The enemy is here, come get him. Spawn campers would be nearly extinct.
Everyone seems so afraid to suggest anything that takes any real work you'd think someone was waiting to swing a bat at them.

I respect the folks who want to gv, hell ive spent more time recently in a gv after the changes. But the main draw for this game is air combat , it's they way the advertise and the game they push. No disrespect intended, but do you actually think that would get used? The way I read this, to get from one base to another you'd have to drive the whole way, taking spawn points and defending them as you go?
While I kind of like the idea from a realism standpoint, I just don't see people being ok with it. Fight and drive for hours to get from base A to base B to attempt a take, or fly there in minutes, bomb the heck out of it, and take it. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Wiley.
-
Interesting situation. The map today has the center area with 6 GV bases surrounded by mountains to keep planes out. Last time this map was up no one went in there at all. Let's see if that holds true this time.
We have an area that I believe is indeed GV-only with short drives to the other basses. Will the GV'rs here that have been complaining about the bomb****s use it? I will, but it takes more than 1 or 2 tanks to make an interesting battle.
If it is not used, as was the case last time, where is the incentive for HTC to make similar changes on all the other maps? Sure, it's not ALL the changes we want, but it addresses at least the bomb**** issue on this particular map. Show them it's what we want and USE that area.

You understood correctly. And yes, I do think it would get used.
If you tried to take a base by air and succeeded, you would then find yourself surrounded by enemy gv spawns... What then?
If you had enough people that wanted to keep that base, you could probably put up a good enough defense to keep it and start moving out into their territory, but which direction?
That is one of the major advantages of this method. It allows a fire and move type of fight. Getting flanked, surrounded or out maneuvered becomes a significant risk.
GV fights could end up in some part of the map that has never had a single vehicle scuff its digital underbrush and spawn campers cant predict which spawn you will pop up at giving them plenty of incentive to stay on the move.
As for making sense, how does it make anymore sense having a tank town where there is no real objective to the fight. It doesnt! The whole point is to have a good fight That is the end all, be all of the GV in this game.
Taking bases is an important and fun part of this game and I dont know exactly how much it would slow the progress of "airfield taking," but just like htc does now, they can tweek the conditions until the right balance of play-ability and entertainment exists.

So... to own territory you'd need to take it by ground. What happens if one country rolls 3 bases deep into the other country's territory by air? Do the bases that are now a sector or two behind the lines still have enemy spawn points at them?
I'd assume the line of available spawn points basically moves between the captured fields? If so, it might not be so bad. It would actually be somewhat similar to the current system, with the possibility of pushing them away from your field.
Again, I like it from a realism standpoint, I don't think it would be playable. Nobody wants to drive for that long. It would be improved by having the spawn points midway between the two front lines, but still it's a helluva long way to drive. Couple that with the mountainous terrain we often find, the map layouts would need to be completely reworked.

I just answered this...."you would then find yourself surrounded by enemy gv spawns..."

Same answer. No it would not be like the current system, you would be surrounded on all sides by enemy spawns.
Nobody wants to drive for that long.
Your missing the point here. Do you think the enemy is just going to let you drive right past all their spawns? You wont be just driving. You will be fighting. That's what we are here for right?

Yes there would be some reworking needed. And I'm sure it would take some time to make, but a complete rework is not needed. Some additions just need to be made.
As I said earlier, everyone wants to suggest changes but not if it involves real change or work.
Either you live with and accept the current system and its flaws or you make real changes. You cant have it both ways.
The only way you could have it both ways is by using the OPs suggestion and as you can see, a large portion of the GVers dont want to seperate the GV war from the air war. They dont want a free for all with no objective other than to fight.
As a matter of fact, I think the furball lake in the DA is a good indicator of what percentage of population want nothing more than a bashing match.

:huh Right, but what happens if nobody's paying attention on the other side and my side advances by air 3 bases deep into their territory? If our GVs do not capture the spawn points in between the bases, enemy tanks can now spawn in 50 miles behind my front lines? This is what you're suggesting?

If any REAL LIFE army takes an airfield deep inside his enemys territory, do you think that the enemy just retreats so that airfield is now behind a front line?
In your example, They arent "50 miles behind [YOUR] front line" you are "50 miles behind THEIR front line."
So you better get your GVs on the ball.

Ok. Realistic, yes. Playable? Nope. Not enough GVers to move the line in any reasonable timeframe. Either people would ignore it and then gripe when their field was taken from well behind where the air force had advanced to, or the line would never move.
It sounds great when you look at it in a small area where action would be concentrated, but when you've got an arena with dozens of fields, to move mud, people basically have to drive the entire distance between the fields. Sometimes there would be resistance, much of the time I'm betting not.

I dont think you're capable of making that kind of prediction, especially since the details havent even been laid out. Chicken before the egg comes to mind.

And again, why would they gripe? They have you surrounded.

To anyone who is bashing WoT because it offers an in game currency, you might as well stop complaining now. The only thing it does is help you get to your goal faster. It gives you zero advantage in battles, besides gold rounds, which are generally worthless besides clan battles.
kilz, why are you blaming a game for your friend spending money? It is his money, the game didn't take the credit card out of his pocket. He did. Yes it is a grind game, all MMORPGs are. If you could have a top tank in a matter of hours, there would be no point to the game.
Oh, and WoT has more than 6000 players. 8,000 right now on a midday weekday. Usually see 16,000 on at night.

WoT is also free. You wouldn't see those numbers if the game was paid subscription, which is why they are so heavily dependent on the micro-transactions and upcoming retail box sales.

dam that's a lot of free players how do they get paid?
-
they get payed by making grinding xo miserable people are willing to spend money to circumvent it.
I don't think I can play AH for a while, even though WOT is a suck grindfest it is still better than sitting in AH and playing with mysef.
I'm having a hard time going from the one kicking everyones arse to getting mine kicked though lol.
Hope Hitech keeps my handle open if I suspend my sub

I don't know if its that cubic zirconia rock you wear on your ear that is preventing you from comprehending but there is already two arenas you can use USRanger's custom GV terrain...in the AvA and get this...Player Created Custom Arenas. There is no need for HTC to create a dedicated GV arena as you already have the ability to create one yourself.
ack-ack
Your right, AVA still has bomb****s, H2H only 16 players. Whats the big deal about having 100% gv arena, if you dont want to go there fine dont go. Will a gv arena be the end of AH? What would it hurt to give in a test for a month, let it speak for itself :salute

This :aok

And, that :aok

Integrate, don't divide. Improve the ground game within the MA. :old:
For what it's worth...
Was once for a dedicated GV arena, not so much anymore. Although... it might attract more players, than some would think.
I now agree with the above "quoted" comments.
WOT = WOW IMHO (in some aspects)
X :salute

probably because its free. I haven't run into more than a bare handfull of simm-players in there.
Lol there is probably at least 100 AH players spread throughout WOT.
