There is a pawn shop that I stop into every now and then, just to see what the guy has. In the past I have picked up old shotguns and rifles for very little.
Well, I found this little Smith & Wesson 22 caliber pistol for $100. Came with the scope, and 5 mags. Seems to be well maintained and doesn't show much wear at all. Looking forward to making a trip to the range to see how it shoots.

how does it look through the scope when your arm is straight? I always wondered about how scopes on hand guns worked.

It has a dot, red or green selectable. No issues with eye relief, you can see easily. It's really easy to keep both eyes open too. This is the first pistol scope I have ever had, and I must admit it seems pretty easy to use. None of the getting the right distance away from your eye like you do with a rifle scope. There doesn't seem to be any magnification that I can detect.
It seems to be balanced pretty well too, just a tad forward of the center of gravity. I haven't shot it yet, but it feels good in the hand, and I think the way the scope is positioned, it will actually help with controlling the recoil without making the shooter have to work to keep the dot on the target.

that thing should have zero recoil :P

Even if that scope came out of a cereal box (as long as the mount is a good mount and also removable), as long as the gun is in good shape and was decently maintained, that's a great deal. Good buy.
.22 has always been one of my favorite rounds for putting a few holes in some cans, primarily because you can keep shooting it constantly all day long (economically and physically).

Looked it up, the scope costs about $60 new. The magazines are almost $25 each new. The gun runs in the $250 neighborhood new. The top of the gun is basically an accessory rail, looks like two allen screws to remove the scope and mount from the gun.
I think $100 was a steal, which is why I bought it.
Besides, like somebody else said, you can shoot 22LR all day for next to nothing.
And Ink, you're right, recoil will be virtually nonexistant on this thing.

That is a nice gun and a hell of a deal. Might start going to pawn shops...
-
New with all those goodies $425 +/- thats a steal.........congrats S&W 22A right?

I would, if I were you.
A few months ago I picked up an Ithaca 12 guage side by side for $90. Got it home and researched the serial number and discovered that the gun is 106 years old. It's in good shape and is a nice shooting gun. Plus I have a collection of side by side shotguns, so it was a nice cheap add to the gun cabinet.

oddly enough, we have that exact same pistol. They shoot VERY nice, and it's just an all around blast to shoot.

Yup, S&W 22A-1.

We have one at the shop, same gun, holosight, 3 mags semi used $375.00............$100? thats one of those once in a life time deals........really happy for ya, congrats.
We have one as a rental (range gun) thing has probably 20K rounds thru it, tack driver, and still working fine.

It helps to build a relationship with the pawn shop owner. I've bought stuff from the guy for years. Tools, guns, all sorts of useful stuff. Now days, if I see something I like, I just ask him how much and he almost always tosses me a lowball price. He also sells some new guns, so I buy something new from him from time to time so he makes some money too.

wow, cool lookin pistol you got the dave, really interested on the scope though, does it have some kick or is it stable from the scope? also, how many rounds can the mags hold? from the looks of it i'd say maybe 7-9 rounds.

Well I haven't fired it yet. But the scope is not mounted on a moving part of the action, and the entire weapon is fairly heavy so I don't expect it to kick much at all.
The magazines hold 10 rounds of 22LR. Kind of nice to have 5 of them, I'll be able to pre-load an entire box of ammo before heading to the range. More shooting time, less loading time.

10 rounds isnt bad for a 22, the one i used to have (bolt action, ran real smooth for me) could hold only 3 rounds in the mag. got a different one and i have to say i would have stuck with the bolt action. as far as the weight/kick goes, it would be virtually recoiless if the scope was just a bit further up. i think that would add more weight to the front and keep the recoil from sending the front upwards. i read somewhere that police/SWAT teams like to use supressors in certain operations to reduce recoil. is that statement true, or is it baloney?

I don't think I would want to make it any more nose heavy then it is now. I don't know who put the scope on it, but it feels like it is balanced about right how it is.
10 rounds for 22 pistols is pretty standard. I had a Ruger 22 pistol that had 10 round mags. I also have a Sig Mosquito 2w which has 10 round mags as well. As it happens, I have a fake suppressor that screws on to the Sig, and it does make the gun recoil less (not that it recoils much anyway). So it wouldn't surprise me if swat guys like suppressors for that quality. Plus the suppressors make the gun more intimidating. I'll post a pic of the Sig when I get home. On my phone at the moment.

as far as the supressor goes, im glad that wasnt a bunch of BS i was stepping in. but i dont think the supressors make the gun look more intimidating as much as it makes it look better! :D
also, how much did the Ruger 22 cost? im hoping it isnt something overpriced.

Well I haven't owned the Ruger for a few years, but they start pretty inexpensive.

But there are nicer, more expensive versions too.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I actually shot it with the fake suppressor on it. I usually just shoot without it. But it does kind of look cool. :D
It's a nice shooting little pistol, as long as you don't shoot DA. The double action pull is horrible.

argh...was hoping for under 300 bucks on the 2nd one. there good guns but not very price-friendly.
now THAT looks cool on a 22! the supressor makes it look larger than what it really is. i have to say, it does look intimidating. (oh what the hell am i saying? a pellet gun looks intimidating..especially up close) :bolt:

Without the fake supressor.

I don't think I paid that much for mine, but I've had mine for nearly two years now.
I don't recall what I paid for the fake supressor. I bought it from a guy at a gun show along with 4 extra magazines. Think it was $30 or $35 maybe.
The pistol itself was ammo picky for the first 500 rounds or so. I had to shoot the CCI brand 22LR. After those first 500 rounds though it seems to eat whatever cheap ammo I stick into it. I put a lot of Blazer 22LR through it now. Stuff costs about $20 for a 500 round brick and seems pretty reliable, very few fail to fires.
-
Great buy on that pistol, 22's are cool to just go shoot. When we go to the range we usually go thru half a brick of 22 ammo, like was said, about 20 dollars for 525, a lot cheaper than 49 dollars for a box of 50 for .45 long colt, and that is for cheap cowboy loads, and they make it a pain to clean. Great buy on that pistol, I wish I could run into deals like that.
-

CTD has a pretty decent price for 45 long colt. I shot this brand before and they seem pretty good to me, but admittedly, I don't shoot very much of this caliber stuff.

That is a great deal thanks Dave. I do believe that I will be ordering a box or 2 mabey 3, for the range next weekend.
-
one of the funnest guns I ever fired was a 22...was a rifle that if you held the trigger half way it was fully auto, if you pulled and held the trigger it was a 3 round burst or just one squeeze was 1 round..had I believe a hundred round drum.....quite a fun gun.
don't remember what make or model
-
For that Mosquito just give Sig a call and they can get you the low recoil spring that is needed for the lower ammo types. It is really picky about the ammo that goes through it. I have one of those myself that I picked up in a trade a few weeks ago for 3 Hardigg Weapons Storage cases. Sig sent me the spring without asking for anything other than a shipping address to send it to me.

Maybe some custom or odd-ball Ruger 10/22 modification?... Most 10/22s I've ever shot though have tight and short triggers though, but then again those are unmodified semis. The legal/less-legal aftermarket available to them is huge, so who knows the possibilities, assuming it was even a 10/22 mod.

I bought mine new, so I actually have the weaker spring already, it came with it. I don't have any trouble with the gun now at all. It eats about anything I feed it. It was just during that original break in period that it was picky.
One thing I did do which I just now remembered, I polished the feed ramp with a Dremel tool (conical white polishing bit) with a little automotive rubbing compound. That solved the fail to feed issues that it had when I first got it. I do notice sometimes, that if I put several hundred rounds through it without cleaning it, that feed ramp gets mucky and I get the FTF problem cropping back up.

I don't know if they are still easy to mod for it, but 10/22s used to be notorious because it was so easy to make one full auto.

its been years....(17) but I don't think it was a mod...I think it was factory made like that.
but I am not 100% sure...guns I don't know a lot about....swords now that's a different story :D

Any idea of a good source for a WW2 style Katana that is actually a decent blade, but not tremendously expensive? I'd love to have an original Officer's katana, but they are hard to come by and can be pretty pricey. So I would be interested in a well made replica.
You can find replicas around on the internet, but I'm a little hesitant to buy one unseen. I've seen some really craptastic katanas being peddled at gun shows and would like to find something a bit better.

That looks pretty nice. A little uncomfortable with the seller being in China though. :headscratch:

There were a few really nice ones at the SAXET gun show when they were down here, I am not sure where you are Dave, but the SAXET goes all thru Texas LA. and AK. if they get close check them out.

You know, I've spent a little time poking around E-bay. It seems strange to me that an actual WW2 Japanese Katana would cost so little. Is it the exchange rate working in my favor perhaps? Or are they that common in China? I realize that the Japanese did invade China during WW2... Or do you think that these are just cheap fakes being claimed to be WW2 Japanese military swords?
Found one selling for $119, so went ahead and bought it. From what research I have been able to do, it is most likely a fake, but looking at the photos, it seems to be a good looking sword. So, even most likely being a fake, I won't mind having it for the little that it is costing. Guess we'll see. Not much to lose if it's a rip off.
-
I got mine I think for 150$
it was a mas produced sword by the Japanese government and givin to there regular solders, many had a family sword that they kept, many did not, these are the swords that were givin to those guys, the were not hand pounded, but done on a hammer, they are folded around 4 times, and were not clay heat treated...so do not have a Hamon line.....
they are real.....I am sure there are fakes but they are not gonna fake a plain foot solders sword ( I doubt anyways) if they are gonna fake something it would be an officers sword or something along those lines
also there is a difference some have 2 "rings" some have one I believe the one ring sword is for riding a horse so would be for regular military, and the 2 is for Navy
(if my memory serves me correctly)
send me a link to the one you got

hate to say it but i am not seeing any layers on that blade.....if you look at the site I posted and other swords the layers are very visible....now I have seen swords where the layers where very hard to see, but they are there...this could be the case, you"ll have to look up close if its folded you will should it.
there are people doing knock of Damascus blades but the grain is very stiff and too perfect...easy to tell the difference.

Interesting. When it arrives, I'll take a close look and maybe get out the macro lenses and take some close up images of the blade. I appreciate the education Ink. :salute
