Post by: chaser on October 24, 2011, 09:39:02 PM
Anyone else see them? I'm in north Texas and their very faint. I have a picture that I'll upload later.

Anyone north of Texas needs to go look!

Hadn't heard about this, going outside now... may have to take the camera for a drive if true.

I know there is a University of Alaska (or Alaska State or sumthin) page that forecasts the solar activity and Aurora, but I seem to have lost that bookmark, anybody have it?

Reflecting  :headscratch:

So what, there is a giant mirror over Canada now...

EDIT: Nothing here now. :cry  I did find the website I was thinking of though  http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/2  while the forecast was for calm, the current picture says "Extreme" but I'm only right on the edge of the visible ring.

It'd either be University Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), or another.

Google search for University Alaska Aurora brought up this : http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast

They were bluish when I saw them.  I expect it has something to do with the atmosphere they pass through for you to see them where you are at.

As promised here's the picture I took. It' not that great because I got away without my tripod and had to hold the camera for the 30 second exposure. But it made Channel 5 News in Dallas, Tx tonight!!

i remember hearing somewhere (not really sure where) that the atmosphere can reflect certain things off of it and it shows up miles away from where it originally started.

and like i  said it was a GUESS.

might have been that, but i can swear it was about light reflecting from the atmosphere.

There is some visually reflective property to the atmosphere, like when you can see the moon during the day. However northern lights are a completely different phenomenon.

I captured this pics last evening driving north on a dark section of Hwy 287,around 4500 ft elevation, in SE of Colorado. I've seen aurora many times driving through Canada, but always green not red, and never at this latitude (38.5N).

Well, that all depends upon the genetics.

I wonder if our magnetic field is getting weaker or the solar bursts are more intense?

We are going through a period of intense solar activity. Nothing too unusual, as it goes in cycles. This was predicted in advance, and is going according to plan. Enjoy the show.
