That "click" is part of the firing mechanism, no worries. Mosin-Nagant's have a little bit of typical Soviet engineering (loosy-goosy), so it inst going to be a highly engineered piece of work and it is going to make funny noises. The "notches" are from the extractor and/or the ejector. My Mosin-Nagant is the same fire/
Just load it up and fire the damned thing. You are not going to hurt it and it isnt going to hurt you, that thing has been through Hell and back and your trip to the range, gravel pit, or back woods to shoot at a target is a cake walk compared to what it has been though. Just check the bore for obstructions (while the gun is unloaded!), and have fun. :D

good to know :D should have seen what came out of the darned thing when i cleaned it o.0

Probably not nearly as bad as what will come out of your keyboard when you clean it! :O

pics or it didnt happen

If you are a bit nervous about firing it you can make a home made firing hold. Get a spare tire and tie the rifle down to it. Load one shell then pull the trigger from the rear and side using a string. That way if it lets go you are out of danger. If it shoots about 3 to 5 rounds OK fire it from the shoulder.
-
Get a okie headspace gauge before you fire it.
If it closes on a "field" gauge, don't fire the gun.

Good catch. I didn't even notice that in my haste.
I'll be honest though. I'm really not sure, from the OP picture, what grooves you are concerned about.

its where the stripper clips go,i figured that out >.<
