Title: Reqesting sad songs.
Post by: EskimoJoe on November 04, 2011, 01:02:00 AM
Life, lately, has gone from suck to blow.

Sad, depressing songs anyone?

Will listen to almost anything, but lyrics are particularly important to me.

Liking this one right now.

Not that I particularly care.

Something about the season, (which is one of my favorites) I always find myself listening to melancholy music, which seems to be in abundance in my record collection here. I'll see if I can find some of my favorites on youtube.

The Battle, Ryan Adams and Caitlin Cary
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-jf-CsewTo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-jf-CsewTo)

Long Black Veil - Gillian Welch (done by a lot of different people including Johnny Cash)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kejux0z7SKA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kejux0z7SKA)

One Fast Move or I'm Gone - Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard (inspired by Jack Kerouac's "Big Sur")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VicSOnRULEU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VicSOnRULEU)

Rex's Blues - Son Volt w/ Kelly Willis (a really good cover IMHO of the old Townes Van Zandt song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baihYiTXDQE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baihYiTXDQE)

Justin Townes Earle - Rogers Park
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEUkyXJXNIY&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEUkyXJXNIY&feature=related)

Stopping By - Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEjXwOyCe0w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEjXwOyCe0w)

Shaky Ground - Uncle Tupelo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQdyIIspUEk&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQdyIIspUEk&feature=related)

Five Hearts Breaking - Alejandro Escovedo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_MPHOu5J9Y (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_MPHOu5J9Y)

If you're still listening that should get you started, I'm sure I can find more if you want. :)

The sad part is, if you were a friend in the 'real world' and not an online persona, I'd gladly
take all of your problems and make them mine.

Thank you for the advice, I'll do that (starting today!)

If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

One day a young Buddhist on his journey home, came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him, he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young Buddhist yells over to the teacher, "Oh wise one, can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river?"
The teacher ponders for a moment looks up and down the river and yells back, "My son, you are on the other side".

Here are some good, essential albums to listen to when depressed, either they're very wintry and dark, mellow or just kind of pleasant overall, probably a mix of both with some upbeat songs 'release' interspersed... I like these kinds of albums anyway, whether I'm feeling down and out or not.

Bob Dylan- the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963)
(Folk- this is just a great album in general)

Nick Drake- Pink Moon (1972)
(Folk- not necessarily depressing but very pleasant to listen to in 'those moods')

Pink Floyd- Obscured by Clouds (1972)
(idk, wikipedia says Prog Rock, I guess that works- I think this album is kind of wintry and mellow sounding, ymmv)

The Velvet Underground- The Velvet Underground (1969)
(Art/Psych rock?- the most mellow of all the VU albums, not as experimental as their first two, just kind of nice)

Joy Division- Unknown Pleasures (1979)
(Post-Punk- I'm actually not crazy about this album but it's pretty classic 'teenage depression' music, you might like it)

Violent Femmes- Violent Femmes (1982)
(Folk-Punk- it's kind of angry and energetic but it's still... depressing. Also a very interesting and important/pioneering piece of music in general, pretty much gave birth to an entire genre)

I'm not 50 years old though, so..

Elliot Smith- Either/Or (1997)
('indie rock?' I don't know, it's Elliot Smith.)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor- F♯A♯∞ (1997)
(I don't know if you've ever listened to post-rock before. This is a great listen if you've got some time. Yeah, it's long.)

Weezer- Pinkerton (1996)
(Alternative/Emo- the last, maybe only good Weezer album)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgEXny_5pAk

Modest Mouse- The Lonesome Crowded West (1997)
('indie rock'- it starts pretty abrasive but the conclusion is nothing short of awesome)

Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
(alternative country/indie rock- not particularly depressing but I like to listen to it when I'm in one of those moods for some reason, it's very pleasant)

Modest Mouse- The Moon & Antarctica (2000)
(indie rock- actually all Modest Mouse albums before 'Good News for People Who Love Bad News' are fairly depressing and very good, although this one starts better and ends worse than their 1997 release in my opinion)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZbcFvjRnrw&feature=related

Radiohead- Kid A (2000)
(that famous Radiohead mix of IDM/Alt rock- if you can't stomach electronic music start with their 1997 release 'OK Computer')
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vFaoA7t2RE

The Antlers- Hospice (2009)
(the epitome of sadcore, also kind of electronicy- if you like it musically enough to get into it this album (and if you can pick out the singers voice through the somewhat poor mixing) is actually really quite intensely depressing, and the only concept album I've listed, telling the story of a relationship through the metaphor of a hospice and a terminal cancer patient)
