Bulb went in the wife's car. Headlight. Here are the first couple of sentences from the owners manual of the car detailing how to change the headlight bulb.
"Jack up the front of the car and place on stands for safety. Remove front wheels."
Really?
Yes.
Access panel for the low-beam headlight and turn signal is in the wheel arch and cannot be reached with the wheel in place, the high-beam bulb, which is in the same cluster can only be changed from the engine compartment after removing the air filter and battery.
I also had to replace a single LED in the instrument panel (did all 7 while I was in). It took me 2 hours of dismantling the dash to get to the bulbs. Every part of the dash HAS to come off.
So, 2 bulbs need to be replaced and it takes the average guy almost 3 hours just to reach them. Putting it all back together is another 2.
5 hour job.
Nice work Chrysler!
-
I have a ford pickup and front headlamp bulb replacement is less then 5 minutes from start to complete.
I also have two lights in the dash that are burned out, but the rest light it good enough so it doesnt bother me one bit
-
I'm a mechanic. I feel your pain! I get that from customers all the time, "$200 to replace A BULB! YOU'RE RIPPING ME OFF!" Then they come back a few days later more than happy to hand over the cash after they attempted to do it themselves!
I also get "Well Billy Bob down the street said he'd do it for $20!" then I say "That's because he didn't look at how involved it is!" Sometimes later on I find out they ended up paying even more to the competitor because they were too ashamed to come back to me! hah
I had a good customer once throw a fit because I wanted to charge him $300 for a custom dual exhaust system for his truck. He paid Joe Bob in the middle of nowhere $125 to do it and then brought it back to me for a State safety inspection. When I had to fail him for no converters (due to Joe Bob cutting them off) and for not having the proper exhaust hangers installed (due to Joe Bob taking shortcuts) and for leaking at the seams (due to Joe Bob not knowing how to weld) it ended up costing him well over $1000 to get it fixed back up. Some people never learn...

first off.....you're a technician, not a mechanic. mechanics are the guys doing brakes/shocks/tires, and not knowing anythign else. you, like myself, can diagnose and repair anything that rolls into your bay....that makes you a tech in my opinion.
secondly....when there's someone that tells me that stuff, i tell them to come back and see me when they want the job done right. i do this politely of course.

back in the 60's i'd have agreed with you on the mopar being better....that's from a guy that likes fords.
the problem is that chrysler isn't doing anythign worthwhile right now. that aberration they call a charger is junk. and ugly. the challenger is beautiful, but agonizingly slow, unless you want to plunk down zl1 or gt500 money...and then the challenger that might match a gt is still slower than its rivals in that price range. and it doesn't handle as well either.
and i can tell ya from driving it.....the new 5 liter is a beast.....and i've not taken her past half throttle as yet, seeing as she's not fully broken in.

we all know that Mopar ruled the heyday of Muscle.....but that is not why I love MOPAR......I don't care who is the "fastest" or who sells more....
ford sold more then anyone....still cant stand them....except of course the 69 MK1 ....
I feel the same about Chevy except I like them less then ford....
pontiac.....I wont even comment on how much I think they suk, yet I like the 67 firebird....
I LOVE MOPAR for one reason
this Baby right here
The absolute toughest car/motor ever made.
NO FORD OR CHEVY could withstand what I put this car through...period......I know.... I left 4 non mopar cars (ford and Chevy) on the highway....all with broken motors...this baby NEVER left me stranded EVER.....California and back, Florida and back, all over new England.....
the Movie Vanishing point has nothing on me and what I did in this Challenger.....
6 and a half years I owned this baby lost 3 races....2 of those were to other Mopars....so she was more then fast enough.....the whole point is that 340 was UNBREAKABLE.
she screamed and went like a rapped ape as they say, for as long as I asked her to.....NEVER before or since have I seen such an amazing car.
no one or nothing can make me change my mind....I know what I did to that car what I put her through....
damn I went almost straight 20 hours at 125 plus.....she had no issues with that at all.
just a little ol' 340......best motor ever.
but like I said I don't care what others like, world would be boring if everyone liked the same stuff.

but it's ugly Ink ;)

actually I think the New Challengers are by far the best retro any company has done(look whys).......it don't matter what anyone says.......I drove one........ I know exactly how they match up to the early ones....trust me...........they are pretty damn awesome....
now the Charger on the other hand if you were speaking about those I would be in full agreement with ya.
they royally screwed the pooch on that one.
-
Bah to change the bulbs for my car I have to take the damn front bumper off according to the owners manual. Would like to find the guy who designed it and choke him.

there's one of the chevy suv's that uses daytime running lights. you need to remove the grille, to get those bulbs.

challenger is ythe best looking of the "retro" rods. but they are unfortunatly the worst performing. this is where i have my problems with them. if ford and chevy(even though chevy had to use foreign designs) can make their "retro" rods perform as well as they do, then so can(in theory) chryser.........

Oh, about five minutes for the 2000 mustang. Haven't had to think about it for the 2012

Oh, about five minutes for the 2000 mustang. Haven't had to think about it for the 2012
i just replaced both low beams in a 2000 mercury sable. i had to take the entire headlight assembly off of the car. the plus side of that, is that it still only took about 4.5 minutes to do both.

All of this the designers made it almost impossible to work on cars crap has been around for a long time. I remember my Uncle had a Chevy Impala with a V8. To get the rear plugs out you either had to pull the engine or drill large holes in the fender well to get to them.
Then again I also remember buying gas for 18 cents a gallon for my car back in the very early 70's and how everyone talked about the economy going belly up if gas went up to a dollar a gallon.

i remember being told i'd be spending the better part of the day doing plugs on a v-8 monza. i was told that i'd be pulling the engine half way out. little did they know i like to prove people wrong. and i did, on both counts. :devil

I have a few(too many) old cars around. They tend to keep me busy, and out of trouble..no time for dwarf vid's Butchers always sending me address's for.
Three are Datsun's, a '73 240z, '74260z and '78 280z. The two later ones run but I've retired em from daily driving as they need refurbishing, the 240z I bought from a guy in line at pizza place when he saw me driving 280z, $400..he had 4 distributors couldn't make it run, oil pump(which drives dist) was inproperly installed.
Anyway..bought my first new in 1974($2999 + ton on dealer fees). Was REALLY surprised that manuel said similiar to OP. One must remove tire then access headlight bucket from inside wheelwell. Still better than 'new' bugs!

FORD....
Fix Or Repair Daily
Found On Road Dead.
Oh yeah? i think i seen just about every maker of car on the side of the road broken down, you know what maker i see the least on the side of the road? FORD i was born 94, my father bought a 96 ford, the first year they were curving edges. I grew up with the truck and have COUNTLESS memories. one memory i don't have though is it ever failing to start or breaking down. Its been in several accidents but never got totaled. It soon was given to me so i could go to school and to work. One day i was blinded by the sun and I slowly pulled off the street so i wouldn't hit oncoming traffic. I failed to see the utility truck parked and rear ended it.
it felt as if i had lost a good trustworthy friend and i wanted to cry. I took the grill with the logo off and kept for memories and got a new truck. A almost new looking 97 ford stepside that was owned by a aircraft mechanic. He had done some work. It had a different exhaust outtake, a improved air intake, and a flowmaster. When we took it to a garage to see if it was as good as it looked the mechanic said it was in perfect condition and was well cared for.

skyguns...i hope you're online right now.....while i find that ford emblem amusing, i would like to kindly suggest that you remove it, before you get yourself a rather lengthy vacation.
that said, when i used to drive tow trucks, i mostly had jeeps, Chryslers, and buicks on my truck. had the occasional honda, some ford tempos(broken tie rods), some infinitys(those mostly used to give starting problems in the cold weather), and the occasional toyota.

the dealer wanted to charge me 65 bucks to replace the 3rd brake light on my ranger as it had burned out. I said no fricking way, went to the autoparts store, bought 2 light bulbs for 65 cents, removed 2 screws, 5 minutes later. job done. oh yeah the dealer wanted to replace the whole thing as it was in a sealed unit. it goes both ways, sometimes mechanics are honest and really does take time to do things but mostly they're a bunch of thieves who will steal from their own mom.

by 3rd brakre light, i meant the high mount, in the back window. i think a ford engineer defected, and went to work for chrysler to do that.

as do their vans. i've got my 85 e350 with over 300k on the odometer, and she's still going. she's rusted to crap, but she starts every time.
also......if the skuzzmeister sees your ford thingie......i foresee bad things for you.

If you ever decide to replace those flattop's, I have some roundtops with tight throttle shafts.
The surface corrosion is common in florida cars.

I had a pair of carbs like that on an old Datsun 1600 roadster. Neat car, just a copy of the old MGB but fun to drive. I remember having to add ATF to the carbs through the top of them. Smoked like a destroyer on smoke screen duty for a little bit until it burned off the over fill. :lol

The ford focus HID headlights are made with a revolutionary concept that makes it possible to offer lights of intensity.
The headlights uses a tube of xenon gas and small amounts of other noble gases placed between two high voltage
electrodes that produce a bright bluish or white light that activates the electrodes. The regulation of light is done by
the quality German ballasts. The resultant light beam is of high intensity and never fluctuates
Ford headlights are preferred because they are a complete plug and play system; power efficient ( about 35w of electricity);
has a longer life of 3 to 4 years, safe to use facilitated by its bright nature on the road and are attractive, cool bluish
or white color which appeals to the eye and makes all things easier to see.
So there! :D
(http://eandt.theiet.org/magazine/2011/01/images/640_ford-focus-electric.jpg)
It will go between 80 and 100 miles before you charge it again depending on the terrain and your foot.
The cost to charge it will vary between 2 and 4 dollars depending on your utility company. If you have
a short commute to work, this is the way to go. Many garages offer free charging stations. You can wave
at your friends filling up at the gas station.

lol Those are HID lights. My Daughter's camaro has HIDs. The whitest are 6000. If you go higher they go to blue then purple. The blue and purple are actually illegal in all states but you see some with them still.

not only that, but you often see some schmucks running around with older cars that use plain old 9004, 9005, 9006 or 9007 bulbs....but they're blue tinted. they do this 'cause they think they're cool.
i almost opted the hid lights into my mustang, but i like the looks of the car better with the normal lights. they're plenty bright too.
-
If you ever run with HIDs you'll want them on everything. lol
Not only that but the police cars glow from a long distance. :)

NAH.....
like i said in the other thread.....i ain't touchin anything. even after listening to exhaust systems from different manufacturers.....all they do is make em louder. nothing really sounds good....just loud. gonna even leave that alone.
-
Just don't be one of this ultra melons that put HID bulbs in reflector assemblies. Them SOBs will blind you.
Only if you buy the cheap HIDs. Properly installed quality HIDs do not blind oncoming traffic. In reflectors it is important that the light source be located exactly where the manufacturer intended.
Many folks think the bright and dim lights are two different brightneses. They are not. All that happens is the lightsource is deviated slightly to reaim light. Those with 4 headlights, 2 being dim and 2 being bright, may use different bulbs. They are actually the same except the filament is slightly moved for a different reflection.
HIDs are actually much cooler than the halogen bulbs.
