So I was cruising the internet, listening to some music when I came across this video.
In it you will see some dreadful images.
GRAPHIC
NOT SAFE FOR WORK OR CIVILIZED PEOPLE
Anyway, check out the waterboarding at 1:53. It's nothing new is what I'm getting at.

ex was in health class, she told me she was watching the birth video for the last period of the day, I met her at the door to her class after the bell rang, it was so funny seeing how pale she was, shaking like crazy, made it clear she never wanted kids in her life time :rofl

It is your worst nightmare every day.
Celebrate your veterans, but hate the war.
You know, "Don't hate the player, hate the game."

There's a difference between protesting, and making your group look retarded by pointlessly killing yourself
-
We can't spank kids anymore, Time out only gives them time to plot revenge, and yelling will get CPS called on you. I think water boarding is a perfectly legit method of discipline. Aren't you glad I don't have kids. :bolt:

Incredible control to sit there and burn to death calmly.

so your saying the monks made their "group" look retarded by protesting?
no offense, but are you legally retarded?

When those images were splashed across Time magazine and the national media they made quite the impression.
Stay out of the deep end if you can't tread water.

That man had belief strong enough that his life wasn't worth the greater point he was making. Do you know what it was? Obviously not since you just learned of it. So take a moment...
What cause would you give your life for?
Think about that for a while. What would motivate you to place your life in harms way? What cause would devote your last full measure toward?
An idea? An individual? A mineral? An inanimate object? An emotion? A wrong? A right?
Put your fingers down, don't type. Think for a while.

I Guess I need to understand my beliefs differ from others, I believe killing yourself for anything is wrong, but that's just me. Death really disturbs me, I don't like the idea of a person killing him or herself

All the advocates of Communists I ever knew never lived in a Communist society and usually had a bigger car and house than me.

Torture is torture.
It seems the general consensus here is it's okay as long as it's the good guys that are doing the torturing?
Torture has never proven to be a reliable method of gathering intelligence.
Are you all retarded?

Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a sytem of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses not from some farsical aquatic ceremony.
Be quiet!
I mean, you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just cause some watery tart threw a sword at you
Shut UP!
I mean, if I went round saying I was an emporer just because some moistened bint 'ad lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away.

-
I disagree, the best possible gorvernment is a benevolent tyranny.
Sure. That might work for one generation, depending on who you get. What about the next tyrant? Will he be as benevolent as the previous?
Democracy is chaotic, and extremely difficult to get anything done. That's a good thing, the less the government can accomplish, the less it can interfere with everyone's lives.
The best government is one that exists only to keep a people from being conquered, preserve laws that protect the rights of the individual and his/her/its property, and can maintain this state of affairs. A benevolent tyranny falls short on that third point.
-
you're telling me that benevolent tyranny fails because after one generation it may fail to be benevolent. That hardly defies the arguement that a benevolent tyranny is the best form of government. That is akin to saying democracy fails because the people might revolt and turn it into communism. You're changing the laws of the concept and then saying the concept doesnt work.
edit: sorry if this is counted as political. I figured it was a broad and non specific, harmless discussion.

I found 'The Interrogator' on PBS's Frontline to be very interesting. Especially when the FBI's top interrogator smiled and said that the only way we take people off the kill or capture list is with a drone.

Hindsight is always 20/20 regarding the things people knew and when they knew them.
Soufan is trying to sell a book. I felt that some of his claims were outlandish. To say that America invaded Iraq over the testimony of a single terrorist is ludicrous at best and irresponsible at worst.
The fact that the guy did ~8 years (I think ) with the F.B.I. and then quit to write a book tells volumes about his agenda.
As far as P.B.S. goes, their agenda is well known.

Melvin go lay on your back with your head tilted down, place a towel over your head have a friend slowly pour water over it for hours on end then come back and tell us what you think. this is not a smartarse responce to your post but just go try it, i did and it's no fun at all, you get that feeling of drowning without being in water.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not fun.
Then again, it was never intended to be fun. Was it?
I just figured that since Semp has had it done to him, he could clue us all in on the what's and why's of waterboarding.
I guess he doesn't want to talk about it though. Other than a vague story, that is.

Well, um gee Semp, I'm not sure I feel comfortable sending my personal info to someone that was waterboarded by the police.
For all I know, you are some crazed psycho that is going to steal my I.D. so that you can access my Moshi Monsters account.
Surely you had no idea what was going on. (And surely all the inmates in Stateville are innocent too.)
I've got a better idea. Why don't you just P.M. me the story here?
Of course, you could have just said you were against waterboarding instead of publicly declaring that you were a victim of the practice.
You see, once someone makes claims like this, the vetting process begins.

first of all there is no vetting process here. second I am not gonna post something for everybody to see as it is nobody's business except for whom I choose to tell or how much i tell. all i say is based on personal experience it is fricking torture. so if you want me to tell you my story then I'll talk to you in person or on the phone. it's your call, literally.
but I tell you this since you question my integrity and my sanity. I have visited a couple of pigs in their homes, they have my address, i have their phone numbers, i have sold and bought a couple of things from the forums. I have spoken to several other players on the phone and some have visited me. not one of them question my sanity or my integrity as I am not a criminal because I have always chosen not to be.

Like I said, you are more than welcome to P.M. me. I have no reason to give you my home phone number and I'm not sure why you insist on having it.
Look, I simply started this thread because I was watching music videos one night and came across some pictures of waterboarding happening during Vietnam. It was my intent to show others that this is nothing new.
Inevitably people posted their displeasure at the practice. To each his own, I guess.
Personally I have no problem with it if it's used to glean information from someone that would do harm to myself or any other American (including you). Considering the other types of torture that are practiced by various nations, I'd consider waterboarding to be at the low end of the scale.
No Semp, I can't imagine that it would be fun at all. Of course I reckon it's a darn sight better than being beaten within an inch of life, having bones broken, being subjected to the jumper cables, finger and toenails pulled out, skinned alive, etc, etc.
Perhaps it's ineffective and perhaps you were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I'm not going to cry out for the practice to end because maybe, just maybe, some people deserve some discomfort. You know, the kind of people that would kill us all in a heartbeat.
-

If its nothing new, then why did you have to share it exactly? We all know that water boarding happens, some more personally than others.

I'm a bit disturbed when people assume that because the police or some other authority figure suspects something, it must be true.
I've been tossed in a cell by men with guns a few times but I've also always been released by a Judge within hours and I've never even been convicted of anything I've been arrested for. I have little faith in any legal system or those who wish to treat other people as though they're sub-human and deserve no freedom. Why must we fight totalitarianism abroad only to embrace it at home?
-
rob it is mostly because some people are stupid. remember the guy who was arrested in atlanta for the bombing during the Olympics? and it turned out it wasnt him. and yet there were many people calling for him to be hanged right away.
before you guys go talk about execute all terrorist blah, blah, blah. first look at this report of people on death row that have been freed for being innocent. since 1973 to 10/27/2010 there has been 138. i think about 1200 have been executed and most really deserved what they got, but it is naive to think all were guilty just based on numbers at least 1 could've been innocent.
so yeah, lets get all the terrorist water-boarded and executed, after all we what a terrorits looks like, right?

Who's saying that? What we're saying is that waterboarding is a minimalist version of "enhanced interrogation".
I've been tossed in a cell by men with guns a few times but I've also always been released by a Judge within hours and I've never even been convicted of anything I've been arrested for.
Really? Within a few hours? So you mean to tell me that the DA built up a case against you that was strong enough to have you picked up, only to have a judge come swooping in and send you on your way for lack of evidence? This must have been some serious stuff you were involved in. I'll bet you were getting ready to hijack an airliner or suicide bomb the Super Bowl huh?
Nah, my guess is you were just soliciting down at the Men's Warehouse.

O.K. semp, 1 guy could have been innocent. That's really too bad for him.
However, the report you posted shows that the system works. It is unfortunate that innocent people get caught up in the dragnet sometimes, however they will eventually be released and well compensated if found innocent.
Another thing you are failing to realize is that a lot of the people released were because advances in technology. People sit on death row so long, that technology eventually catches up with the investigators mistakes.
rob it is mostly because some people are stupid. remember the guy who was arrested in atlanta for the bombing during the Olympics? and it turned out it wasnt him. and yet there were many people calling for him to be hanged right away.
Yes, the people that called for his execution without proper investigation were morons. However, that's not what happened is it? Nice strawman, but you'll have to do better than this.

Calling waterboarding a minimalist version of 'Enhanced Interrogation' IE Torture is like saying that a murderer is a minimalist version of a serial killer.
I mean that the judge could easily see that I'm trustworthy enough to come back on my word alone and fight in court. I wouldn't say that has ever been a lack of evidence but most judges still care about the bill of rights. It's generally taken 6-12 months to get through the circus we call a legal system, not a justice system but a legal system.
I don't consider any of it serious and I'm certainly not ashamed of it but my initial bond has been as high as 24k and I've only been charged (and not convicted) with 2 felonies and a dozen or so varying degrees of misdemeanors.
Feel free to climb off that high horse of yours at any time.
-
Calling waterboarding a minimalist version of 'Enhanced Interrogation' IE Torture is like saying that a murderer is a minimalist version of a serial killer.
Nope, that is a terrible analogy. Try again.

It's generally taken 6-12 months to get through the circus we call a legal system, not a justice system but a legal system.
So what you are saying is that they had enough reason to bring you in and press charges, then the judge released you on bail? Yeah, that's kind of how the justice system works fella. Did they waterboard you into giving false info while you were in custody?
Feel free to climb off that high horse of yours at any time.
Wasn't aware that I was riding any high horses, but if you insist then I will proclaim how much I enjoy the view from up here.
-
They felt they had reason to, my judges felt I was honest enough to be released on my word alone. I've won my cases.
-
They felt they had reason to, my judges felt I was honest enough to be released on my word alone. I've won my cases.
Well that's good.
What exactly does this have to do with the subject of waterboarding though? :headscratch:
-
It is torture, we should use interrogation. I feel like people underestimate the patience, cleverness, and manipulative abilities of trained interrogators. It's not like they're going to sit down and have a quick chat with the guy.
-
I couldn't tell if you were making an assumption of guilt based only on the thoughts of those doing the interrogation or you assumption that it's ok to torture people regardless of innocence or guilt so long as there is suspicion.
Treating people like animals or worse than animals will certainly make them into an enemy if they aren't already.
My first time being arrested, even though I was only in a cell for about 8 hours totally changed the way I view my government and police force and to some extent my society for tolerating it.
I now consider the US to be de-facto police state. After all we are the world leader when it comes to putting people in prison with over 1% of our adult population behind bars. No society in history has imprisoned more of it's citizens than the United States. 5% of the world population is American yet 25% of all people in prison in the world are American.
Back to the point of waterboarding. I'm not going to say that torture never ever ever ever has a place, but it should be considered as an exception, not standard operating procedure. Watering down waterboarding by calling it 'Enhanced Interrogation' is wrong and leads people like Melvin to think that it's no big deal.
-
Well that's good.
What exactly does this have to do with the subject of waterboarding though? :headscratch:
melvin if policy were to use waterboarding as an enhanced interrogation technique here in the old united states and they were caught they would be doing life for torture. and trust me there's people here that I wouldnt mind if they got an "enhanced" interrogation. but It still comes down to it being torture, and when you torture people they will tell you whatever you want to hear just to make it stop.

Have you bananas realized yet that water-boarding is not torture in the sense in which we know what true torture to be?
Breaking bones. Bamboo under fingernails. Branding. Electrocution. Amputation. See a trend?
Sleep deprivation and water boarding are going to allow a person to walk away from the event with everything intact. They will just have a few bad memories which will hopefully remind them to not F with the US and its allies.
If the baddies give the information they have and cooperate then they will have no bad memories except for some guy named Ben Dover, bad prison food, and the having to share a bunk with a guy with a flatulence problem.

If you are from the UK and you go to the foothills of Pakistan or Afganistan for a loaf of bread for six months and come back and complain about people's suspicions I have no sympathy for you :old:
I have a bench Mark for countries I want to visit which is:
"Don't ever goto a country people are trying to get out off"
