Title: xbox pricing this weekend
Post by: eagl on November 26, 2011, 01:42:30 PM
One of the huge discounts offered this weekend was $100 off of xbox + kinect bundles.  $199 for the $299 4GB system, $299 for the $399 250GB system.  The stores had only a handful of these, right next to a huge stack of identical full-price ones, so it was obviously a black friday marketing trick.  Well...

Microsoft has the same discount pricing online.  Stupid retailers, thanks microsoft!  Some people waited in line nearly a day to save $100 on these consoles, yet MS is still selling them for $100 off on Saturday, with no end date listed for the discount pricing.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.BlackFriday

So...  If you're looking at an xbox console to buy, check out microsoft's site before you waste any time standing around in line.  It's around 33% off for the 4GB console, a fairly decent discount if you're going to buy one of these anyhow.  That'll pay for 2 first-tier or 3-4 second-tier kinect games.  I doubt we'll see any deeper discount for these things anytime this or next year.

I agree with eagl  :salute  on this one i think the games are overpriced but the system for 200 hundred bucks is a good deal.

Nowadays i just wait a couple weeks and buy the game used for half the price.

I have a question.  What is the purpose of having the 250GB version?  What is the purpose of the extra hard drive space?

Save games and installing games to your harddrive. Its easier on the system and on some games (like battlefield 3) the graphics are substantially better when you install it to your HD

I bought my first xbox for £10 with rrod, fixed it and it ran fine, spent some more modding it and its been completely spot on. Yeah the failure rate aint great but the current generation of kids/adults have no clue on how to even try to fix one. I have fixed 12 for people who's warranty ran out and modded a couple for people I know. I didnt even charge for any of it, just did it because I wanted to see if I could.

Nobody I know even tries to fix things anymore, its all rather sad

It seems common sense cannot prevail over the Internet, so this will be my last post in this thread otherwise I fear I may give myself an ulcer. eagl if you are thinking about purchasing one I would definitely get the 250, because I think you will be kicking yourself later if you don't. I have an old 120gb elite that I have about 30gbs left on. Space goes FAST.

Anyways, to get this back on topic Eagl, i think that MS could give a bit more of a discount on the 250GB system...maybe 20 dollars less? its just out of my reach  :lol

The 250GB was also $100 off, $299 vs. $399.  For those who do online gaming, they also had a better bundle with a bunch of points and 3 months of xbox live.  I don't think we'll be using the console that much so that bundle wasn't very attractive to me.  But I almost went for the basic $299 250GB kinect bundle.  I read that regular external USB drives work and I have a couple of those lying around, so maybe I don't need the extra internal storage anyhow.

Can't I plug in a USB stick or USB hard drive?  I have a couple of old USB drives I could plug in and forget about.

YOU SKIPPED OUT ON THE BUNDLE?!?!?! :bhead

you just missed some great stuff there, 3 months of xbox live is 20 bucks, and the points (probably 5600-ish) is worth about 50. that was a great deal. also, with the USB drives, all of those work, i have a few i use myself for music and such.

Yea, it looked like a great deal... for someone who wanted all that stuff.  I mostly want it so my wife and kids can do the kinect dance games.  My wife had a lot of fun playing those games at parties and my little kids LOVE music/dancing, so that's what it's going to be used for initially.  If I need storage I'll plug in an external drive (I have several obsolete IDE 200-300GB drives just lying around) and if I had enough time to do online gaming, I'd probably spend that time doing something other than console gaming anyhow.

you know you could have bought at least 3 or 4 different kinect games with the 5600 microsoft points off the xbox live marketplace, and thats a pretty good deal.

I thought it was 1600 points...  The more layers of complexity they add to the system, the less likely I'll participate.  Points?  Online account?  Need a credit card info or have to sign up for an account that I need to cancel when the free period runs out?  Forget it.  Gimme a simple discount and I'll pay cash.

They don't make money on those big tag items, the money comes from the regular priced items people buy while they are in the store for the "bargains".

Funny thing...  The geniuses at Radioshack forgot to put the words "limited quantities" in their black friday ad...  Therefore they are required by law to offer rain checks to anyone who asks for them in the state of Michigan.

Door buster deals, like the Xbox deal, are sold at a loss.  They are designed to get you in the door so they can sell you accessories, batteries, service plans, etc...

At the BX on base, they had a huge pile of regular price xbox systems, and a lady stationed there to tell people that they were out of the sale price ones but still had "a few" of these other ones right here, so...

So I walked out and completely by accident stumbled across an article that mentioned microsoft's online store had xbox discounts.  I checked the microsoft site thinking no way they'd have the same discount price, but sure enough they had ALL of the black friday discount prices still available as late as mid-day Saturday, plus some other ones I didn't see in any store advertisements.

I will say that both of those are very good games as is LBP.

So I had one friend wait in line since late in the afternoon of Thursday to get one of the PS3 on their black friday retail sale.  At 4am on Sunday he realised maybe he had made the wrong console purchase, and us XBoxers were onto something when he finished beating MW3 and then MW2 and wanted to continue his adventure back through time to where the story/idea/meat-n-potatoes/it-all started from and expereince the storyline for himself...
