I had the good fortune of being able to meet Heeler in person. We met, had several cups of coffee, and had a real great visit. Most of it was not AH related, just life issues and stuff. (we have the gray hair syndrome) :lol
Anyway it was fun and he was the first one I had met live. It was kinda funny... you know how you might picture someone by how they sound and act in the game. I was not far off, it was really cool. Looking forward to it again, as he lives in the city where my daughter and her husband live.
-
We have at least 3 AH players here in my city.
Never met any of them :noid
-
Four members of my squad live in my city. We get together quite often.

Met a Few people from the game already MBailey lives around me same With VonMessa usually see him once a month and I met Drano at the Reading air show.
-
I've met 11 of them over the years, and even tho none of them fly any more I still keep in touch with a few of them.
-
I too have met Heeler in person...that old fart gets around. I still owe him a cup of coffee as he bought the last round. I have also met BudGray who lives in my town.
-
I haven't met Heeler :old:
I have met airbull, Amsoil, Bruv119, SF3, Viperius, Flyover, Loxy, and most recently, SirNuke
Apparently there are even more AHers that live in my vicinity (as well as Loxy + Flyover who are both ~10 mins drive from me), from the 71st!

Well, let's see... I have met way over 30 of Finnish AH players, 2 Brits, 2 Germans and 2 Danes so far during these 10+ years. About a dozen have visited my house, and my wife has met an additional half a dozen during our family holiday trips. So far they all have been very nice people, some of them have become close family friends. Adding to that, that only a handful of current and retired AH'ers live here, the next closest ones 250 km's away from here, then 400 and 500 km's. Considering our non-existing cross country flight routes and lowered wintertime speed limits (80 km/h) on the roads, going to meet them is not a moment's idea.
Anyone visiting North Carelia in Finland is welcome to contact me, at least for a cup of coffee or a glass of beer.
And we Finns have a reputation of being unsocial and withdrawn people...
-
Met Heeler as well... For a grouchy old cuss, he sure does get around.
-
I try to catch up with squadron buds and other guys that I have met over the years here in AH occasionally. Sometimes we actually get to sit down and swap stories about families and show off pictures.
-
I met Xbrit.
-
I've met 49Devil, AKA 49Maverick. Pretty classy guy, bought some pedals from him. He runs a pretty big business about an hour from home. Being another displaced Tennessean and all (I'm from Vegas, he from Arizona) fits...
Boo

I also met bunnies, or wait did I meet ardy123... awww I'm confused already ;)

Met JAMX, 3rdID and Pipz so far. GTOGuy is a neighbor.

Correction: After making a list with help of ancient squad topics and con pictures, the number of current and retired Finnish AH pilots I've met is at least 45. On Dhyran's list there are some familiar names, too, whom I don't count as AH players, as they only play it at cons.

Heeler and I were supposed to get together a while back on his next trip into Texas but then his route changed and we couldn't do it. I would have liked to meet him.
Drunky and Rattfink got me into the game so I know them, other than that, the only one I've met for real is Grizz. Here is his picture:

I've been fortunate enough to meet a lot of the Fin's, a few members of the Few, a couple of US members (Rox, Babalonian and Curnutte) and to a man they've all been fun to be around. Going to Finland in the spring was the highlight of my year for 2 years in a row, and I'm hoping to be able to go this spring (missed last year unfortunately). I'd love to meet more, so far, not come across anyone who wasn't worth meeting.
Ink, were I able, I'd be up for more ink - maybe in the future fella.

LOL was so long ago I almost forgot I met SF3 but that was while we were playing Air Warrior and he was on vacation in Iowa.

In addition to Wurz and SF3, I have met Popsman (who is my dad), Tudza (a local pal and coworker and went on a B-24 ride with him), Wedge, 4440, SheGotYa, Alaskn, Fencer (in the 90's at an Air Warrior convention in Los Angeles), RabidRabbit (went on a B-25 ride with him), and about 10 players who were at the Museum of Flight get together in Seattle. I have met Newman and Roscoroo who I don't think play anymore. Rapier and Gazoom live nearby, so I will meet up with them at some point.

oh i forgot to mentioned the weirdest thing that ever happened to me. i lived in nc when i started playing aw, i joined the 327th steel talons squad. the squad who actually started koth as a weekly squad duel then some other guys asked to join then it became a really popular weekly event in aw.
anyway i moved back to ca and i was working in the simi valley or somewhere around there as a closet door installer for home depot and lowe's. this time back in the early 2000's I went to this house to install a door and once finished on my way out i noticed by the door a hat with the 327th logo on it. I got lost just looking at it that the lady had to touch my shoulder to get my attention. for some reason I didnt say anything and to this day i regret as I wouldda met one of the 327th guys that I still love.
I still cry when I think about it as we spent some good times playing the game in aw.

I must be going senile, I almost forgot all of the Guys at the Indy AH Con in 2003. Some I can still remember are Alaskn, 1ijac, Wax, Karaya,Hap,PTBop, Flo, Jordi, loser, Alpo, Box, Curval and of course Hitech. there were many more just need to find that pack of cards to list them all.

I'm stunned how the Americans don't meet each other more. After all, aren't the vast majority of current players Americans? I guess there must be one hundred of them to every Finnish AH'er. And since the density of the population is about double over there, about 200 American AH'ers live in the same size of a spot as one Finn.
-
Your not taking into account the physical size of the USA Biz - before I moved here, I didn't either. Whilst there are loads of american players, geographically, theres lots of travel distance/time.
Wurz
-
Actually I am. USA is only 29 times larger than Finland. If the density of active paying AH'ers were the same over there than here, you'd only have space for about 500 American players. Wait! Isn't that the amount on American Prime Time? :huh

From Memphis, Tennessee to Bristol, Tennessee is about an 8-hour drive. In fact, it is closer to drive to Canada from Bristol then it is from Bristol to Memphis.
Our West, it seems to go on even longer. The Tonopah Highway going north out of Vegas...ug! Salt Lake to Denver is just over 8-hours. Salt Lake to Phoenix, 10-hours. I know, I know...something about airplanes.

Nope, never been there. But I can read both maps and wikipedia. If Finland were an US state, it would rank #5 by area. Alaska is 5 times as large as Finland, Texas only twice, California 1.25 x , Montana 1.12 x, New Mexico and the rest are smaller.
@mthrockmor From where I live, it takes 6 hours to drive to our Annual Spring Meeting place, Virrat. 7 hours to Vaasa autumn con. Hey, Finland is three times as large as Tennessee!

Put it into perspective though. If I wanted to drive and meet Silat, it would be 3200 miles (around 5150 km). That's why we fly across the country instead of drive.
-
Who takes a vacation in Iowa? :neener:
I don't live in Iowa either, had to drive there and it was a long trip, I'm 38 miles from the state line.

it has taken me 49 hours to drive from California to nc nonstop. to go to dallas is 23 hours from californa and it's 1/2 way across the us. to go to dayton oh, the other annual meet is 34 hours. worst thing about driving is traffic in some cities. it has taken me 5 hours to drive from north hollywood to my house a distance of perhaps 70 miles.
semp
-
Funny how everyone points out how long the distances are for not meeting each other in America...
Another calculation: During these 10 years about 1.5 of 100,000 Finns have or have had a paid AH account. That makes 1 for every 5000 square km/2000 square miles. Figure it as a circle with a radius of 40 km/25 miles.
Knowing that the population density in the USA is double compared to here, there should be more than 2 AH'ers living on the plot of that size. Evenly placed, there'd be a distance of 35 miles between each other. I suppose the percentage of players is bigger over there than here due to advertising, language etc. , so the distance between two players would be even smaller.
The number of Finnish players is based to my memory: those 46 or so I've met plus some 35 I haven't/have forgot/don't know of. The number of American players during the last decade is a commercial secret of HiTechCreations, Inc. Compared to the population, the 1.5 players in every 100,000 people gives 4,640 current and past US AH'ers during a decade, which I think must be highly underestimated. The calculations above are based on the supposition that there were at least the same number of players in America per square mile than here.

(geographical stuff)
I may mix up different games... but wasn't there, long time a go, a map on someone's AH website which players could mark their location? Kind of international AH atlas? :headscratch:

Funny how everyone points out how long the distances are for not meeting each other in America...
Another calculation: During these 10 years about 1.5 of 100,000 Finns have or have had a paid AH account. That makes 1 for every 5000 square km/2000 square miles. Figure it as a circle with a radius of 40 km/25 miles.

The distances involved are one factor. The bigger part of it most likely is that most of us are not going to drive more than a couple hours to see someone from inside a game. Not speaking for anyone else here but I for one am not a large party kind of person. I don't like going to large gatherings and hanging out for hours on end.
I'm sure it is all about mindset as much as the distances involved. Most of the US lives in fairly developed areas and am not used to nor have a great deal of ambition to drive any great distances. I know I can find most of what I want or need within 15 minutes of my house.
I have considered trying to meet up with others at WWII Weekend in Reading, which is where I met caldera at. I go as often as I can but I don't usually think about trying to find AH'ers in that crowd. It's a pretty busy day as it is and I usually drive there immediately following work, making it even worse.
Just my thoughts and I may be the exception.

Damn! I wonder how many times I've walked past you, or sat next to you on the flight line, or maybe shared a table at the shows in the hanger. Most of the players I've met are at that show. I've been to a half dozen or so in the last 10-12 years.
-
Unless you go on Saturdays, not many.
Most people it seems go either on the first day to beat the crowd or on Sunday. I work both of those days so Saturday is the only one that I can make and like I said it's rough. The first year was really bad. I rode the motorcycle from York, PA to Reading and sat in stop and go traffic on the interstate for 15 minutes on a day that hit 100 degrees after working all night.
Maybe this year I will let everyone know what I am wearing so they can find me.
-
Ya, most of my trips are on Saturday. I drive down from MA on friday night after work and hit the show when the gates open in the morning. Spend the day, even having had the chicken dinner a couple times and then head back to the hotel for the night. Drive back to MA Sunday morning. Out of all the people I've met and talked to there only 2 still fly, well one and a half. AKdogg, and Murdr. Murdr is too busy being a rock star these days so we don't see him much any more.
Biggest problem is the show is on the same weekend as the HS graduations around here. I have to give up the trip for sons, nieces, and nephews making it out of HS alive!
-
In that case then I would say we had to have crossed paths. Maybe even shared a bus from the parking area since last year i was on one of the first buses from the main parking lot.
I ordinarily tread pretty lightly when making plans to go since my wife and my anniversary is that week too. She doesn't enjoy it as much as my daughter and I do.

Between the 2003 Indianapolis AH Con, the 2008, 2010 AH Gatherings in Dayton and AirZoo meets I've met more than 300 folks from this game. I'll be attending this years Gathering, because someone has to drink some beer and help Chef grill....
I will also try to attend a Finland Spring or Winter Meeting within the next few years.

Highly understandable. I don't like mass gatherings, either, and I guess in the USA they are way bigger than here. Finding a fellow AH'er in some WW2 event with tens of thousands of people is equivalent to the needle in the haystack.
What I wanted to point out with my calculations, was to show that statistically there should be a couple of AH players living within a half an hour's ride. It shouldn't be too difficult to announce e.g. on this forum one's willingness to meet other people in a certain area and then arrange the gathering to a nice place, be it a cafe, pub, restaurant or your own backyard depending on the agenda of the meeting.
The first fellow AH'er I ever met was Kanttori. In fact we had already known each other for some months when he heard about AH and asked me to join him to play. He's got a large network of acquintances whom he used to talk into trying this. After about six months of playing I gave a party for my 40th birthday inviting all squad members, too. That was the first time I met people whom I had learned to know in cartoon skies, our squad leader coming from 400 km away.
On our cross squads bulletin board forum we also have a sticky with people's names and addresses. Every once in a while someone starts a thread telling he'd be travelling to a certain town asking to meet local AH'ers. As Rondar hinted in his post starting this thread, it's mostly grabbing the opportunity, in his case his daughter living in the same town as Heeler.
My door is always open to any fellow AH'er passing by.

talked to jaegr1, shifty, and dicho on the phone. like em all. great guys. i worry a lil about dicho though......his sense of humor is so demented, it makes mine look normal. :noid

With the 2 cons in the area I've met a ton of people including the staff of HTC. To a person they are some of the finest and most
