In a standard furball, do you chose your target based on plane, alt, proximity to you, what?
For me, I tend to leave the -51s alone since they have E and tend to burn up on reentry, and focus on planes with co-E and proximity, with type of plane being last favorable. But I do find myself behind Spits more than anything. That wing root is too easy to hit. I love watching it snap. :rock
-
Spits, same reason.

I love killing ponies, because there's only a few who actually fly it to their (the pony's) potential (I hate fighting them....)
38's, because I hope beyond hope it's someone who knows how to fly it, and I'm constantly trying to learn new tricks in them.
109's, they're hard to hit, and nimble, and like the 38, I'm constantly trying to learn new tricks in them.
LA7, because honestly... who flies those that's been in the game for more than 3 months... *ducks*

I always go straight for the 109s, usually a good stick that won't run and will have a nice dogfight :aok
it's a good rule to follow imo!

AFK :)
(that IS a fight to me, two nights ago it took me 3(!) attacks on an AFK Spit to shoot it down :uhoh)
-
:rofl
B-17s and B-24s...
B-17s because they are so damned sturdy!!!!
And B-24s because I like the way a set of them try to be as good as a single B-17, and just end up on fire in 16 different places.
:D
-
I like shooting down badly flown Mustangs and any and all Brewsters.
I'll HO Brewsters, the rediculous over modelled things they are.
-
I go after the 109 because they get up way high very easily, and often flown by someone who knows how to handle them.
Also the P38, pretty much for the same reasons. Plus it's a pretty big plane and I love to see how it breaks off its wingtips and tail infront of me if I get lucky enough to hit one. :P
Then its the F4U, any one of them.. Because they can be distant icons the first time you look, the next they can be blazing guns hanging on full flaps wrapped around your ears if you don't do anything about them.. :lol

In a standard furball, do you chose your target based on plane, alt, proximity to you, what?
In a furball, one will have multiple threats, so the decision has to be made and made quickly to figure out which bandit is proposing the most immediate threat, but only limiting your decision to the above 3 choices can be a mistake, the SA mental picture is much more involved and larger than this...
in asking the Above question, what really is in question is how ones mind works when in a multiple opponent vs just you, or possibly you and other friendlies........ so you have to QUICKLY do your visual scanning around you, QUICKLY decide who is where both enemy & friendly, QUICKLY determine who is on who and then QUICKLY decide what to engage first, then 2nd, then 3rd........ it will depend on how much info you can process and how many moves that might or will happen in the future you can forsee taking place....... mental overload is what usually bites one in the 6 and causes them to get shotdown
For me, I tend to leave the -51s alone since they have E and tend to burn up on reentry, and focus on planes with co-E and proximity, with type of plane being last favorable. But I do find myself behind Spits more than anything. That wing root is too easy to hit. I love watching it snap. :rock
I would myself, personally, not discount any plane regardless if they are below me, co alt or above me, strictly talking in reference to being in a furball environment....... and if a person puts a co-e plane at the top of their list, they are opening themselves up to being drawn into a tussle because you are CO-E, meaning you are equal to or current engaged opponent and you are going to have to make him make a mistake or out fly him, thus causing you to possibly lose more E and become a sitting duck for all the other bandits around you......... because, one most times will become target fixated on the co-e opponent and forget about the first 1 or more mental pictures they took scanning around them once hooked up or locked up in a 1-on1 fight with that closest co-e co-alt opponent, letting slip from their minds that they are in a furball environment
regarding the practice of SA ( Situational Awareness ), it is something one learns the definition of, then starts practicing their SA by the forming of GOOD SA Habits which one never fully masters, it is something one continuely practices to stay on top of their game the best they can as long as they participate in this type of gaming environment! :old:
hope that helps :salute

biggest threat first, work your way down from there ...

Normally I am for Ponies, La7's, Spixteen's, or any other high ENY plane so I can rack up the perkies in my Brewster.
Last night 9.42 perks for a pony and spixteen.

:rofl :rofl :rofl
Hmm so many say they go for the biggest threat. From my experience I'd say most go for the least threat, throwing away all caution and advantage to be the 1st to tag that low/slow JU88, Boston, 38, JUG, Goon, smoking bleeding 1/2 wing rtb guy :rofl :rofl
When I take out the JU88 for "silly fun" it's like Black sunday at walmart when the doors open. Holy Jeebus.
Personaly I go for whoever is on my 6 or above me ;) unfortunately, that's most of you

I never understand the fixation for why people choose the highest ENY plane as the biggest threat first, let alone gang bang it.
ZOMG Juggler look!!! A p40C!!!! *watches 8 dive on it* hey guys...what about the 2 spit16s 5k overhead of the P40?? Aw crap!
-
In a furball, I target the highest planes first and force them down low. Afterwards, I target spits, lala's, and ponies because they give me the most perks per kill :D

I remember years ago a cartoon that depicted "hordes" of mosquitos that would frantically dive on whoever the character was everytime he went outside, maybe Bugs Bunny or something like that. The antics of AH reminds me of this cartoon and I laugh! :rofl :rofl ;)

sadly true. Ive got very used to calling high threats, engaging them and then realising after a few turns that the other 5 friendlies that were at my alt are now 12k below me and I'm now in a -E 1v4 :bhead

biggest threat first, work your way down from there ...
I agree with Holmes, when entering a furball, it is of the best idea to enter the Furball with alt or co alt to the highest threat....
In a furball, I target the highest planes first and force them down low. Afterwards, I target spits, lala's, and ponies because they give me the most perks per kill :D
yes, as the same as I post regarding RTHolmes' reply........ one should not be coming into the furball ( within icon range ) with any less altitude than the highest planes in the furball, or if with lesser altitude, at least be carrying enough speed to equalize the altitude difference...... meaning you might have a little lesser altitude but your speed ( K - energy ) overcomes the altitude advantage of the higher planes, and most times will catch them with their pants down, with the higher cons thinking since you are lower you are a lesser threat although the exact opposite is true......
again, this all deals with Good SA habits, and how one follows through with their practices....

So easy! :lol

Slight twist, my favorite fights is me in my 51D on the deck stall fighting another 51D, La7 or late-war 109s. 38s and F4Us have too match advantage on the deck stall fighting for my skills though I can work those others just fine.
The worst is when I am in one of those epic, on the deck stall fights and some bonehead comes through and picks, either side. As in picks me or picks the other guy.
I'm not a fan of buff hunting.

I go after German planes when I am in a 51 or spit.
I go for 51s and spits when I am in a German plane.
Russian planes I try to engage German 1st but I still seem to find myself really enjoying shooting 51s in my Yak.
-
The one that is a historical opponent to what I'm flying.
I'm in this column too. If I'm in a PTO marked bird, it's gotta be Japanese birds. If I'm in an ETO bird, I look for LW first. On the rare occasions I up a 109E or G, I look for Allied birds. Screenshots just look wrong if it's not the historical opponent you are shooting :)
As I'm in my 38G most of the time, I look for Zekes, Tonies, N1Ks and Ki-84s.
-
109s and 190s!
-
Hurricanes and Brewsters.
They'll up them when they see a Zeke coming in, believing it evens the odds. It doesn't.
I'll tell you a secret; You wanna scare a Zeke flyer, up a Spit 5.
-
B-17's with Rockets, until today....now B-29's with rockets, My first today. :salute<S> WWhiskey also he promptly came back at 10k, 3k above me and shot me down on our next flight...I landed the B-29 kill.

Favorite plane to kill?
KI-84's. those things manage to pull E right out of their asses when they need it.
-
109s because 90% of the time, the pilot has a clue. It's fun fighting someone who's good in your best plane.
I like shooting down spits too.. not because they're 'E Z Mode' but because I like trying to out maneuver them in my K4, helps me to learn to control my plane better. :aok
-
Although the OP titled the thread "Your favorite plane to shoot down???"
he opens the thread with the below first question, so that is why I posted my previous reply as such
In a standard furball, do you chose your target based on plane, alt, proximity to you, what?
but to answer the question that is the title of this topic, I like shooting down the next enemy plane that crosses the nose of my plane, no matter what type it is
cheers

109s - for the same reasons listed above.
-
Spits, LaLas, Zekes, KIs, Ponies, Typhys, Tempests, 262s, and NIKIs.
-
Anything I can get my sights on im happy to just hit something.
-
I don't necessarily have a favorite plane to shoot down, but it when it comes to it I love to shoot down 109s, especially the ones that complain when you kill them in your mustang....*cough* Luftwhiners *cough*
-
WHAT! You can shoot other planes Down ??? :O
-
the closest 5eny plane. usually a 51d or spit16. they pay nicely. I believe I've killed more 51s this tour with the 38j than any other bird but i'll need to check stats page to verify.
-
ponies - Quit running.
P38's - I have a hard time blowing this plane out of the sky. -_-
-
FM2s are my favorite target. I also like shooting down 109g6s. :)

Anything with a red icon......

Any high end plane with my low end plane. Makes it that much more satisfying.

Another take on it:
My favorite plane to shoot down might simply be the plane I actually have shot down the most: :joystick:

Where do you get the charts? If your making them yourself then wow great job.
I just tracked my stats over the years (long time by just manually copying them into an Excel / OpenOffice spreadsheet after each tour) and then clicking on the "chats" button. No magic, hardly any work and very easy to do. That is, 'easy' as long if you only track your own, basic plane stats ;)

Interesting that you shoot down more goons than spit16s.

Interesting that you shoot down more goons than spit16s.
I'm a defensive player most of the time. Spit 16's are found more often over their own bases or in the middle of a furball. It's not one of the main planes used in attacks. On top of that, I'm a buff hunter and I very much like flying against the enemy horde, which in particular is responsible for my high number of goon kills. (In tour 94 I had killed 54 Goons and 119 M3 :devil - but we had much more NOE raids back thenl)

Over Furball Lake in the DA, I most enjoy shooting down Tempests and F4U-4's.
In the MA, probably Spit 16's and La-7's.
-
The guy in that spit16 is actually a well known, well liked, seasoned stick. The main elements of his demise where two fold. Overconfidence. Sporting nature. He wanted a fight not a kill and he was 100% sure he would win. It's amazing how easy it is to get in trouble real quick and not be able to recover it in time.
For me the perfection of that kill is not me vs the other pilot, its a low p47 killing a 10k chick16 before the jug realises it's impossible.

LA-7's are my favorite to kill, especially when I am flying a LA-5.
-
The F4U-1A Corsair, that's my #1 favorite plane to shoot down in the MA. I love the F4U, can't fly it so save my life. I am fairly new to AH, but flight sims in general are my drug of choice since I was 11 playing AirWarrior. I haven't been with any one plane long enough to really know what I'm doing in it. Just head out, get some E, and have fun. The plane I am honestly the best in thus far has got to be the P-47D-40!!! The bad part of this as she doesn't turn well at low speed, it will turn, but it's a workout with flaps and WEP, and if it's something that really can turn, your in trouble. I like them if furballs though, since the P47 responds well to my train of thought when I enter a furball.
1. Who is the largest threat. Probably the guy with both alt and E. Unless there are two aircraft flying as a pair, the double E advantage is the one who is most dangerous.
2. Who is the least threat. Where is the low and slow, hanging on his wing in a stall guy.
3. Where is the exit. How can I get out of here if things turn south and I still have enough E to make a break for it.
Obviously these will change as the fight goes on, but that last one is really the most vital, since the 47 can get smacked pretty good and still keep on juggin. While I know the roll rate of the 47N is superior, all other performance stats are in the D-40's favor. Don't get me wrong, when a fight is in sight of the field, the 47 isn't the best choice. But if you are on the offence, or just allow yourself space to gain alt and speed before the fight, there is nothing better for furball flying. High speed turns are outstanding in the jug, and if you can hit them well enough in the first few maneuvers, you can still have E left to recover and set up for another attack.
I love 109s in other sims, I just need more time flying them in AH so I can enjoy the benefits once again. I personally don't think there is a better fighter in AH then the G-14 when flown well. The climb rate makes them so dangerous, and flaps are kind to her.

It also looked like he was carrying way too much speed thru the whole fight which allowed you to get inside as quick as you did ... typically a noob mistake while in a Spit 16.

I agree, plus the spixteen is one of the harder planes in which to lose speed in a hurry once that mistake has been made.
