Title: Scam Alert
Post by: Wayout on December 30, 2011, 12:47:44 PM
1-425-998-1533.

If you get a call from this number it's a scam. They will tell there is something wrong with your computer and only they can help you fix the problem. If you do what they say you'll be infected with a virus and they'll have access to all the personal information stored on your hard drive. The only way to remove the virus is to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows and all your programs.

Um, yeah...right - I'm gonna believe somebody that I've never heard of from a number I don't recognize has access to my computer and know there's a problem with it.  Lordy, people are dense that fall for stuff like that.

Even I'm smart enough to not fall for that

My favorite is the emails from 'FBI "Aegnt" John Currie', telling me how, while serving as official Diplomat to the Sudanese Monarchy, they discovered that said Prince (sometimes even the King himself  :P) is aware of my existance and has somehow stolen several million from me, despite the fact that I've only been old enough to be officially employed for a few years now.

I keep telling Mr. Currie I'm aware of the fact that Sudan doesn't have a monarchy, that FBI agents don't serve as "official diplomats", and that I really don't care about my lost millions, but he doesn't listen.

The FBI really needs to raise its standards  :ahand.

If they're a chick I put some load porn on and start chatting them up. If they're a guy I pretend I cannot understand them and ask them to repeat everything several times, then I chat them up.

I used to be a Western Union agent. You should see some of the stuff people will fall for. It's mostly old people falling for religious missionary scams. The company I worked for lost 20K when the agent on duty fell for a "Western Union Customer Support" scam and sent 4 "test" transactions for $5,000 each.

Yes, you get a FCC message about the Scam.  At least that was the case a few days ago.

Happens a lot.  The big one Greendot pre-paid credit cards now.  Same scenario.  Person calls up claims to be a greendot agent testing the system.  If I ever get one I'm going to act like I'm doing everything they say.

I found this place (http://www.419eater.com/index.php) a long time ago when trying to find scam-back sites...it's entertaining at least. Plus, I take it a lot of you haven't seen the images of some of these guys (usually black and in the desert somewhere East) doing all sorts of weird (and sometimes graphic) things in a desperate attempt to prove that their scam is real. I see them from time to time on image sites, but I can't think of what you'd plug into Google to find them.

I like how someone always comes along out of nowhere with a severe need to be a "good guy," and doesn't manage to add to the topic at all. Classic White Knight behavior.
