Title: Story Mode in FPS
Post by: Penguin on January 12, 2012, 10:56:58 PM
It seems like the writers of FPS campaigns have no idea what they're doing.  There is no plot, just one endless firefight.  I don't mean to poo-poo explosions and melee, but the lack of real character development is astounding.  Though I don't want an RPG (not my thing) a good set of characters whose personalities and development influence the outcome of the story would maintain a sense of continuity and order to the chaos that dominates the market.

For instance, a great option would be to have a careless EOD who constantly lands the squad in hot water by just covering roadside bombs with sand and saying that they were removed.  Perhaps an over zealous pilot who cluster bombs an entire block to remove a single barricade.  How about a dirtbag officer whose no-holds-barred attitude toward the enemy leads to the death of an informant who could have provide vital information.  Perhaps a friend back home who sends post cards to the squad that make them homesick, leading into a mutiny plot twist.

Just sitting here I came up with several exciting ideas, but no, all we get is an endless fireball.  It's frustrating because such scenes are entirely scripted, requiring no game design, just beautiful cinematics.

Has anyone else here thought this way?

Agreed. Now kids just want to push a button and watch things blow up. God forbid you actually have to think a bit to figure out the best way to do things, or have to listen to some stupid cut scene, that has some hints at what would be a good way to do things.

Edit:
I'm thinking that I might be hungry.
I second that. Really hungry for some reason  :noid.

The closest I had found to that was BF: BadCompany both one and two. Star Wars: Republic Commandos was very good too. Poured countless prepubescent hours into SW:RC multiplayer on PC.

Yes and it is one of the big reasons why I love the final fantasy games. The storyline is impressive, the characters are many and well developed. The games always have insane amount of cutscenes which move the storyline along... oh and catgirls !  :aok

Has anyone ever played Killzone? That game has the best story ever. Both 1 and 2, and I can't wait for 3. (Killzone is the only reason I didn't sell my PS3)

Radiator
Underhell
Nightmare House 2
1187

these are the ones that i can remember right now but there are so many other mods with deep storyline that will impress you. try Underhell first. It is amazing, not only the super duper action all the FPS' have but the character... such deep storyline oh man... try it.

Hell, just play Half-Life and Half-Life 2. And Half-Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2.

Now if only Valve would hurry the frell up and finish Episode 3. The episodic format was SUPPOSED to speed up development times. It's taken almost as long for Episode 3 to come out after Episode 2 as it did for HL2 to release after the original!

Rumor is that Valve isn't going to release Episode 3 and instead turn it into Half Life 3.

For people wanting a rich story in a FPS that you can basically chart your own route and do what you like, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a great game.

ack-ack

Penguin, here are some explanations of the games I'm talking about.

Radiator: http://www.moddb.com/mods/radiator

Issue 1 of Volume 1 is Polaris, in which you're stargazing in central California on what could totally be both the lamest and the cheapest date ever.

Issue 2 of Volume 1 is Handle With Care, in which you're struggling to repress stressful memories while your worthless husband moans and whines to that equally worthless marriage counselor.

Underhell: http://www.moddb.com/mods/underhell

In Underhell, you incarnate Jake Hawkfield, a Special Weapons and Tactics Operative, who recently got married and moved in with his beloved wife.
But soon after those happy events his beloved wife dies in mysterious circumstances, only leaving clues that lead to believe in a suicide. Jake falls apart, and only his best friend, mentor and boss Frank is here to help him get over his grief.

The mod begins with a wake up call from Frank, ordering Jake to come down to the station. An armed group of elite soldiers have taken contol of a hospital and all it’s personnel.

But Jake will soon realize that it is not a common Hostage Situation…

1187: http://www.moddb.com/mods/1187 <- if you have played half life series, please play this mod, really worth it.

nightmare house 2 : http://www.moddb.com/mods/nightmare-house-2

In Nightmare House 2 you wake up inside an abandoned hospital with no understanding of how you came to be there, only a vague memory of the girl from Nightmare House haunts you. Soon it will be difficult to determine between a dream and reality. How long will it take you to realize that escape is not an option?

You need steam to play half-life.  Valve makes half-life and owns steam as well.
