Title: Influx of new players
Post by: Frodo on January 20, 2012, 10:19:34 AM
With the release of the Red Tails movie, I expect a lot of new players over the next few months. Help them out when they have questions. It will only help the game that we all play.  :aok

It seemed like there was a bunch of fresh meat during the two weeks over the Christmas holidays.  I tried to help a couple out.  I got a lot of attitude and whining in return for my efforts.

The green newbies I have somewhat more patience for.  I help out the red newbies by letting them show off their mad skillz all the way down to their impact with the ground.
Title: Re: Influx of new players
Post by: Traveler on January 20, 2012, 01:18:31 PM
Lets hope so, I didn't see the same influx at Christmas time that I had in prior years.  Not as many two weekers stuck around after the trial period ended.  113th Lucky Strikes did manage to retain one new member out of it though so it wasn't all bad.  But I'm not seeing the same influx of new players as a few years ago.  I really enjoy this game, hope it survives.

The general experience for everyone is only as good as we all make it for each other and ourselves.  Trash talk on 200 is understood,  can get out of hand, but is easy to control, just detune it.  Idiots that respond to a question from a team mate or request for help from a noob with Alt + F4 are just juvenile and hurtful to the game experience.

With the economy the way it is and with so many options for online gaming if we want this game to be around to enjoy we as a community had better do our part to ensure it’s a fun, enjoyable place to be.

None of us what to end up one day some  place in the future discussing the great air combat games of the past, Air Warrior, War Birds, Fighter Ace, Aces High?

Is there someway to direct New Players to the training arena? I help them all the time on the help channel but some need more help than can be given in a few sentences.

    CAN'T TAKE OFF!
    HOW TO FLY!
    WHAT I DO?
    WHERE IS EVERYBODY?
    HOW DO I DROP BOMBS?
    HOW TO FIRE ROCKETS?
and then of course after they finally take off.....(on Help Channel) I am in Bombers headed to X base. Try to inform them "Help Channel Enemy can read" but they ignore me and I give up.

Maybe a message to direct noobs to Training Arena would help instead of annoying players in the MA and decreasing frustration of 2 weekers that may drive them away.

So who's running the pool on how many squadname variations on 'Redtails' we're going to see spring up in the next month?  Put me down to cover 23 through 26.

I also support Hitech's alt-f4 idea.  Frankly I'm a bit surprised it's not in there already. :)

Shane took the time to help me with not only fighting technique, but also computer optimization one night in the AvA.

If he isn't careful, he might just tarnish his bad reputation.

Anyway, what is the freq for help channel?

It's not a frequency. You tune to it like you would tune to country, area, squad, etc. It's Orange text, and transmits to all three countries.

CC, found it.

You know, I've been beating my head against the brick wall we know as Aces High for ~2 years and never knew that was there.

Perhaps HTC should make one of the text channels "help" by default.

There are lots of us who never fell for it.  Heck, nobody ever tried it on me.  But I did a lot of reading about the game before I ever logged into an online server and didn't ask very many questions on the open channels.

Never figured out how anyone got pleasure out of doing something like that.

This is my first online game ever. I love flight, played on a nationally ranked intercollegiate atheletic team, spent years in the military, etc. This whole idea of hazing people is just foreign to me. It's about teamwork and comraderie. Alt-F4 is cute and all but I put it right up there with HOing, etc.

Everyone pays their own $14.95/mo so entitled to have their own fun. I can't imagine hazing newbies is going to build our ranks.

Come fly with the 113th Lucky Strikes, we found a way to beat the hord. Come wing up for a flight, or a night add some strategy to your game, we fly as Knights, Vox 113, Saturday evenings starting at 7:PM EST.  Everyone welcome no matter what level player you are.

Weak individuals that can't find healthy relationships on the "outside" often resort to internet bullying and "I am awesome, you are the suxxor" posting.

Guys like us just shrug our shoulders and wonder what the hell happened to a whole generation of grown men.

The Alt-f4 gag is a rite of passage.  It applies to other games as well.

The retention of new players is hugely important.  If the revenue stream gets too low.  The game closes.   I have been involved with a few games that died due to fading customer support.  A good example was: EA's Motor City Online.  The game seemed healthy to me, yet EA was not hitting the numbers they were shooting for.  So bingo....the doors close.  We got no warning...no impassioned plea from EA to get more people playing? .....just Bingo ....it's over.  That could happen to aces high....so don't be naive.

I still miss Motor City Online, everyday.  It was a huge part of my life.

So the next time somebody asks how do I drop the flaps?.  You might consider what life would be like with out Aces High?  Remember all the people who took the time to help you when you needed help? Even if you are some hotshot pilot, who even read the manual. I'll bet you asked somebody a question, in the game or on this BBS.   They didn't have too help you, but they did.  All I ask is that you "pass it on".

by the way ....I still have not read the manual.... :lol

There's a manual??? man i wish i knew that years ago  :cry

But seriously everything you said was right, if we wanna keep playing we gotta encourage growth which means not flaming the newbies looking for genuine help... as for the know it all "I'm the best, Everyone else sucks, and I don't need your help newbies, then flame away... burn em to cinders!

I just installed to come back to the game after a long absence and on a new system, help was not a channel I had. It was two country channels, vox, room, and mission I think. No help though. (I actually did not even know there was such a thing until now). Tuning that as default would probably be a great thing for new folks for installs.

I believe that if you use any of the channels "drop down" boxes one of the selections is "help". It's been a while since I've tuned it. Last time I tried to help I got an ear full from an ungrateful player.

I think this comes with the age group, anyone under 18 whose attention span doesn't last more then 15 seconds won't bother to ask the right questions, last night I had a guy ask on country when did the trainers pop on in the TA - I told him its best to contact one via the BBS, unless he wanted an unofficial trainer, which he didn't care. Took in the TA and did a few minutes with him, mainly the basics and he got it down pretty good.

Had came prepared with a pen and paper to write stuff down, I told him instead of trying to absorb the entire game as quick as he can, test out each area of the game until you get a firm understanding of the field - for example he wanted to learn level bombing, we practiced taking off with a heavy load, then on his second try got the calibration down.

Only took one hour, but I am quite sure he will do well. I think if everyone stops by TA to learn 1 hour in each of the fields of the game (Ground, bombing, ACM) it would be much more effective then getting overly frustrated for nothing.

I normally try to be helpful, but will also follow-up help with:  You can check what all the keys do, as well as change them to what you'd like them to do in Options -> Controls ->Keymapping

Or wherever it is...

They normally don't listen, but at least I'm pointing them in the right direction.

Noobs are the future of any game.

I'll be hosting a support group for guys who like to be careful with carriers only to have them given away by some noob and his SBD.

True but you can't blame them.  All they want to do is get into the action as fast as they can and they don't know the nuances of the game well enough to keep themselves and others from slaughter.

It happens to vets too!  The other night, Dodger and I were toolin around and saw a CV heading to an enemy port...we decided to up and start a fight only to hear "Not yet Dodger, we aren't close enough yet".  We didn't look to see 15 guys sitting on this CV waiting to lift to take the port!  It was funny.

oh I know.  I think its the way that 99% of us learn that it's generally frowned upon.

Artlaw was the my Obiwan  :aok  That has to go back a few years and haven't seen that name in years.  You are right, they will never forget.

:salute All of the great squad websites and developers who have done a great job, and of course all the AHWiki folks.  I can't tell you how many times that I have run across Soda's information.

Just last night I came across Krusty's NEW skin catalog.  Very nicely done  :salute  It immediately went on my browser tool bar along with AHEvents and HTC home page.

I would have to say that AH must have the best community of players, ever.  The forums and the chat buffers don't even begin to show the big hearts of the guys that you could be flying next to anytime.

Lethrnck,
You are the tops for helping out a brother in need.  Your deeds will never be forgotten, and I hope they shall come back to you ten fold.

Then...  After many many years...  Those frowners suddenly have an epiphany and realize that the noob in the SBD pays the same monthly subscription rate ans has just as much right to use that carrier as anyone else in the game.  Including the war winnerz...

Meh... I say leave it. It's a windows command. Like was said here:

I've been using Alt-F4 to kill programs since Windows 3.1.  Don't kids get computer classes in school anymore?

I wasn't aware of it at the time when I was first introduced to it (many years before AH), but I have learned a lot since then. It was simply a sign that I didn't know nearly as much as I thought I knew. I regularly do things that were taught to me in basic intro-level computer classes (like how to use MS Word, putting borders on tables in Excel, etc) and have people asking me how I know these things.

My first thought is: How can you NOT?

I would be against kicking somebody for typing alt-f4 in the buffer. No matter how juvennile you may think it is, it's a valid key combo and a windows shortcut. I'd rather HTC did nothing to it, but i fhe DID just trap the key press so it does nothing. It's kind of inconsiderate to kick people for typing something.

I've forgotten more than I ever learned .... but that was easy .... I didn't learn that much. Honestly, I learned more about the culture and community than I'll ever retain regarding ACM ... and whatever managed to stick, regarding ACM, doesn't mean I can actually replicate it in the game.

The most important thing I've retained: Have fun, man ... it's not real ... and you should be glad of that.

That and: You'll make friends in this game that you'll probably have for life. Probably a few enemies too (but, in the long run, you'll both probably buy each other booze at the next con you both happen to make it to at the same time).

Geez - my points and stats are dreadful! (lol)

Nrshida and Ardy123, showed them the basics once and now they can swat me out of the sky without a hint of effort.

As for my trainer, there were too many to list, because I basically just took on the best sticks in the game until I could manage to start beating them. Then I got into MA alot more and destroyed all opposition.

You learn by getting your prosterior presented to you on a platter.

Shane took the time to help me with not only fighting technique, but also computer optimization one night in the AvA.

If he isn't careful, he might just tarnish his bad reputation.

Anyway, what is the freq for help channel?

Hmmm... I didn''t  realize that Shane had a bad reputation.  I've always known him to be either deadly or helpful.  I guess it's which side you encounter him on. :D

All the Best...
