Wow that is one slow site.
I thought it was the Story from Tennessee where the 31 year old woman, who still lived with her parents, was "defriended" by a local man and woman. The Dad recruited a buddy and they went over and shot the couple in the head because they upset his daughter. They slashed the mans throat too. All while the woman they shot held her 8 month old child.
Oh well... facebook is a great tool for stalkers and companies that gather information.

Im all for owning a weapon, but what gets me is..
You should know how many rounds you have in the weapon at all times. He was even counting them off and says, lets see if if I have another oh wait there is 2 left. That sure was not a firing range either. Houses and traffic in the background and he turned half way through the magazine. IMO that is not the model of a conscientious gun owner.

Not very bright are ya? The reason this idiot had to act like an idiot is that what ever he has been trying was not working. So, what exactly are you wishing for? That your parents were trying something that was not working while they made an arse out of them selves?
Not sure what the wold needs more of, but it sure isn't more idiots.

I think you're missing the point. Woman are nuts. That's a fact. Lots of girls have daddy issues like this girl is going to have after this bs. Taking the laptop away and even shooting it is one thing, but taping it and posting it on facebook is another. Public humiliation is no way to raise a kid, especially a girl, unless you want her to grow up to be a pornstar.
-
Yeah, that is not a good Dad.
Does he really think she's going to be more motivated by this. I doubt it, she'll be pregnant and a meth addict by 18 in response from the lack of quality attention and the application of strict punishments. Then she'll so the same crap to her kids.
He did this only to make friends laugh not to teach his daughter a lesson.
-
I'm not going to predict her future but I don't believe that public humiliation is the best parenting technique to use on a teenager.
I have my suspicions that this is a bit though.
I've raised a kid and he turned out pretty good despite my inadequacies.
F22.. good on you for taking the responsibility on yourself. Keep it up or I'll personally put you through a wall ;)
-
I dunno... My parents are firm believers in this guy's ideas... probably 80% of my friends have been paid to do basic sh** like emptying dishwasher, mowing lawn, making beds, etc
With 6 people in the house, which is a little under 1400 square feet, it gets crowded. And dirty. 4 lunches need to be made a day, 4 beds made, 4 coats hung up, 8 boots/shoes put away... Honestly. Couple of my friends have done this same sort of thing. I think it's because so many parents either don't have Facebook, or don't friend their kids. If they did, they'd get a faceful. Ridiculous language, slandering and verbal abuse of adult figures in their lives are only a few. The whole deal with me getting Facebook was that I had to have my parents as friends. I tried blocking them, and had it taken away for 2 weeks I think? It was two years ago, so I don't remember.
Anyways, kudos to this guy for actually paying attention to what goes on his daughter's Facebook wall. Eventually she's gonna HAVE to get a job, and the company/hirer is gonna check out her profile, see that note, and go "hmmmmm, best candidate? I DON'T THINK SO. The door, Madam?"
Then she'll just complain about "it's so unfair, blablabla"
Rant=done. Lemme know if any of it made sense :D
-
I saw the video on Facebook... I have but one question. What idiot will discipline a teenage girl using his .45 cal sidearm? This seemed as much about the guy's rage at being ridiculed by his kid on a public forum as about teaching the kid about respect and responsibility. Seriously, a counter post stating, "if you think it sucks to be you today, wait until tomorrow", would have been sufficient. Then, deal with the kid privately. But, blowing 7 holes in the laptop was more than a little beyond the pale...

At the end, she was amazed that other people had such amazingly strong reactions. Some said she’d grow up to be a stripper. Others that she’d get pregnant and become drug addicted because of the emotional damage. She actually asked me to go on Facebook and ask if there was anything else the victim of a laptop-homicide could do besides stripping because all the posts seem to mention that particular job and she wasn’t so keen on that one.

You have to be stupid to think money is of such great importance. Shooting the laptop (+/- $300), his daughter understanding that she needs to respect her elders and that she has it easy compared to them (so she needs to work hard), priceless.

Daughter went for public humiliation of her parents.
Got busted by Dad .. publicly.
Hopefully she learned a few things from it.
I have raised two, daughter and son
.. I told my son to get out when he was 16, he was a total jerk to his mom and I.
We are friends now, he is in his 40's.
Daughter has 5 kids of her own.
I have no idea how she manages, two were quite enough for us.
Coupla things I picked up along the way:
Kids .. most go through a war of independence in their teens.
Parent means just that.
Not best friends, not milquetoast.
If a Parent doesn't set boundaries/expectations and hold the child to them then they are not doing their job.
Discipline has to be a procedure, not spur of the moment rage.
The Parent has to be consistent, ie: 'I won't tell you a 3rd time' ..etc.
If a kid developes as a spoiled brat others will have to step in eventually to provide adult supervision.

What gets me is he said he's no dummy that he worked for IT then turns around and says he just spent $150 on updating her Laptop . I don't buy it . Besides I would have used my shotgun .

He spent money on software so that his daughter could use it for school. That only means that he has a moral center and don't steal software.

Yeah ? I bet not one person here has spent $150 buck's on software ..

This all seems like back-pedaling and damage controll to me. Aside from that it's all short term stuff. He says, "At the end...", but this is just the beginning of the story. The end will be when she accepts or rejects the porn offers when she turns 18. I don't understand why any father would open his daughter up to that by putting a spotlight on her, but something tells me dad wouldn't let anyone trying to exploit his girl live.
The girl says, "...victim of a laptop homicide....", as if the destruction of the laptop is why people had strong reactions. She's downplaying by not acknowledging the public humiliation part (or just not understanding), but I have a feeling it's just making light in an attempt to lighten her sentence by kissing dad's ass. This girl will probably turn out fine, but monkey see monkey do. Others will follow and I just think it's bad parenting. I just don't get facebook though. When I think of all the trouble nazis had to go through to obtain info on their future subjects it just boggles my mind that facebook exists.

Agreed. Emotion, particularly anger, combined with a firearm is a bad idea.
I feel his pain, but I think he went a little too far.

Almost all kids go thru their AH time during their teens, "and that dont stand for Aces High". I found that taking my kids X-box and notebook works better then any smack Ive ever given him. Within a few days he's sticking his nose into the man cave trying to make small talk, eventually the apology comes and the promise not to be an AH again. He's a good kid, no drugs, no real trouble, but teenagers are teenagers. Things is with sons you can toss them into the street and let em sleep in the woods for a few days, if their old enough. With daughters you just cant do that.
Nowdays kids call 911 if the old man gives em a well deserved shot. Hahahaha, Im not kidding. The entire world has gone upside down, we got this freaking Govt. involvment in everything.
Daughters are a whole different problem then sons. I dont have one but have friends that have had world class drama with em.

I don't know how you all can decide that he is a good or bad parent from a few minutes of video. The world is not black and white.
I'm all for what this guy did to the laptop, and I certainly don't think it makes him a violent parent. Someone mentioned it earlier, it's about consistency, and we have no way of knowing from one instance his consistency.
I do have to disagree with the public humiliation though. I'm not going to make any judgments though, I'm not a parent, and it's kind of obvious who else in this thread isn't a parent.
-
I don't know how you all can decide that he is a good or bad parent from a few minutes of video. The world is not black and white.
Not how good/bad a parent he is, but how good/bad his discipline technique in this instance was.
-
Not only did he overreact, I'd wager he's got issues, too. Here's why:
If you're a parent, you ought to feel like you're in control (i.e., I don't mean draconian discipline, but that your words carry weight) of your household. Therefore, discipline, while uncomfortable, should be akin to mowing the lawn in that both are things that 'just need to get done'. In addition, you should be aware of your own strength- that of your body, mind, and words- they are all greater than your child's. So even if your kid tries to hurt you, you should not go nuts and pound them into the pavement with extreme prejudice- if there isn't anything abnormal (the kid is a genius, mini-Arnie, sociopath, pyschopath) defeating them should not be a problem. This brings me to my point about the laptop; the girl humiliated her father in front of perhaps 10-20 people, tops (only so many could have known him and read the conversations). The correct course of action would have been to take her Facebook away while you figure out what the problem was, and how to resolve it. However, by posting that video and humiliating her in front of everyone who knows her (potentially on the order of 1,000 kids) he shows just how insecure he is.
So you see, the real problem was not whether the punishment was reasonable or not, but that the father is insecure about his position in the family. That's a real problem- feeling like you have to pound your kids into the pavement if they step up to you doesn't solve anything. Someone who has true power knows it, and exercises restraint, rather than get anxious and overreact when a weaker individual challenges them. Yes, I sound like Steve Erwin meets Dr. Phil, but it's the truth.
-Penguin
-
No Peng you've pretty much nailed it.
Squid always knew who made the decisions around here and, while he was a really easy child to raise, I can see where I could have screwed up (and did) and allowed him to take charge.
This REEKS of a break down in communication in the family unit and that, as a father, disgusts me.
It should not have come to this and I reiterate my position that if the only tool you have as a father is attempting to humiliate your teenager in front of his or her peers then, at some point, you've failed and you need to recognize that and deal with it as a man and not denigrate to outlandish actions of a child. He just taught, in my mind, his daughter that outlandish actions might bring about the results she desires.
Frankly I hope they both get help if this video is for real. Honestly I think it's a publicity scam. If it isn't dad, mom, and step mom, need some parenting classes.
-
My Dad made me beat the phone off the wall with a baseball bat because I made a long distance call. This guy just got his point across in a manner she would completely grasp.
-
Honestly I think it's a publicity scam.

You jsut contradicted yourself pretty horribley. He gave her the laptop = fail. He permanentley took it away from her = fail.
How many kids you raise to adulthood already, Ded?
Two girls, but I am really confused on how I contradicted my self there. All I said was that if the story is true then what ever he has been doing so far is a fail. If it was not, he would not have to do what he was doing. The guy is an idiot in so many ways there is not enough BBS space to write about it. So, after you explain how I contradict my self, please explain to me what his next step is going to be if this does not work. It is like telling your kid that she/he is grounded for ever. OK, what comes next then? They are already grounded for ever so lets start shooting at their things? :lol Don;t forget, they are kids. They don;t think the same way adults do.
-
You know... parents gave their kids worse punishments 40 years ago without the kids immediately becoming drug addicted, strippers,or porn stars. Now you even ground a kid and use LOUD WORDS to do it and people get offended.

Huh? Is that why there are no drug users, porn stars and strippers 40 years latter? Sorry, but stupid argument gets stupid answer :rofl
-
Heee's baack!
Apparently Dr. Phil had some things to say about this guy so he responded. http://www.break.com/index/facebook-dad-vs-dr-phil-2303496
-
He really misunderstood Dr. Phil's argument, and then put fallacious evidence behind his own. Let's start off with the fact that attending a session with Dr. Phil is entirely voluntary, and if you don't like watching it, you can turn it off. However, if your parent does what Facebook Dad did to you, you have no say in the matter, and there's no getting away from it. Furthermore, if he was worried about publicly humiliating his daughter, then he would have shown her the video privately on a television or done the deed live. He knew what he was getting into when he put it up on YouTube, and therefore he cannot claim that he had anything but a superfluous conviction regarding protecting his daughter's privacy at the time when he put it up- heck, he didn't even apologize for his "accident".
Now that we have established that he is either shreckless or incompetent (i.e., does not understand how YouTube works) we can continue on to his two fallacies. The first is a simple non-sequitur, teaching kids to respect their parents is not equivalent to obliterating their possessions with a hail of lead when they grumble about chores. Where he got that idea, I don't know. Furthermore, for all the "raisin' 'em right" that went on in this BBS (inhabited, I assume, by men similar to him) I hear an awful lot about people crashing cars due to peeking under miniskirts, bringing eight year olds into bars, and drug shenanigans involving parent and child alike. That's certainly not indicative of any inherent superiority in parenting style. Secondly, he attempts to prove that his style of parenting is more effective by a show of hands- I guess UFO's, ghosts, and Sasquatch are real, too! 100% of at least half a million people believe in them! It's ridiculous, the man is covering his own sorry but with mismatched facts and an argument weaker than a house of cards.

Also, though I may not agree with his % argument, I should point out that half a million people is only .0016% of the U.S. population.

Right?Someone needs to shoot this guys laptop.
-
Guy looked pretty calm to me.
I shoot old electronics all the time (yes, I know this wasn't old) and I'm not in a rage when I'm doing it.
Al I have to say is that the daughters public humiliation of her parents backfired. Must suck when a plan doesn't come together.
Although I have not shot any of my daughter's electronics for punishment, there is a cell phone of hers somewhere at the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay, the consequences of lying to her mother about where she was through text messages. I was fairly calm through that situation. We even made a mini ship's anchor for it before we scuttled it... :aok
-
I think he handled it wrong.. He should have sold the laptop and bought a new holster for the 45. Why ruin a good pc to teach a spoiled brat a lesson?
-
What I don't understand is how you can deem her a spoiled little brat without even a single scruple. Tell me, have you never, ever grumbled about what your parents do? Perhaps Facebook is more public, but this sort of stuff has happened for ages- thus, this is a question of degree and not kind. Furthermore, she did not intend to publicly humiliate her father- Facebook conversations, though techinically public, are intended for one's friends. Though he may have felt that he had been publicly humiliated, her intent matters just as much as the action. For example, if I got into a car crash because I sneezed and jerked the accelerator, then that's not being negligent, unlike if I had been texting. The problem isn't just that the car got wrecked or that the comment was posted, but the intention behind those actions. A polite nudge would have worked better than this whole shenanigan.

-
What I don't understand is how you can deem her a spoiled little brat without even a single scruple. Tell me, have you never, ever grumbled about what your parents do?
Penguin, I never did grumble about what my parents told me or taught me. They sat me down and talked to me in a way that I understood them . I learned from them rather than they having to yell or tell me that i was wrong. I guess I just had great parents! I am 50 now so its not a time line thing either . I still would have sold the laptop. Why throw away money ?

Boy my relationship with my father was like a cat and dog , we fight a while and play a while fight a while and play a while . He all way's won being in the 82nd Airborne but in the end we were the best of friend's and stayed together .

Although, I do have faith in human stupidity and that makes me think it may actually be real.
Here is what is funny about all this. The people that arguing in his favor and congratulating him. They seem to forget that if this is real, he and his methods have been a total fail until now. Do you really think he finally figured it out and the solution was to shoot the lap top? :rofl

Ahhh, I see you found the link useful :aok. Of coarse they do and they always will. But if his goal was to prevent that he failed. If he was not trying to prevent that then why be upset about it? And if it was just "acting up" why go to such extremes? But as the link I provided you with explains, I am wasting my time. I do find it fun though :headscratch:

One typically gives as generously as one takes. Similarly, and ironically, one generally kicks themselves in the bellybutton the more they tend to stick their foot in their mouth.

And now I know where Orwell got his inspiration for the Ministry of Thought :tongue in cheek Now what's more important is what you think. What do you think?
