I mean, come on. In NJ they've got the flags half staff today for a Celebrity.
Ridiculous observation for something that's supposed to be done for heroes.

I have to agree with you oz. She had a beautiful voice but failed as a positive influence.

*two thumbs down
She was a celebrity not a national hero.

Yea, that is ridiculous.

reminds me of this song, something "people like you more when you are gone, so why don't you kill yourself?"
besides if we lowered the flag for every actual hero, we may never raise the flag.

Who let this happen in NJ?

I'm not a peacenik by anymeans, nor am I an imperialist... but I've long been of the opinion that our flags should be at half mast as long as we have soldiers dying in our country's wars. It would be a reminder to all those who sit comfortably at home that sacrifices are being made every day. :salute
Flying it half staff for Whitney Houston is a huge insult to anyone who's ever died defending this country and her honor. I thought this was going to be a joke of some sorts when I read the tagline... I guess it somewhat is.

Ever been to NJ? You wouldnt be so surprised if you had.
-
Congratulations Whitney!!! One week drug free!!!
-
I saw a picture somewhere and it went something like this:
"Soldier who won the Medal of Honor, died to save his men, forgotten by many the next day. " "Celebrity drug addict dies, makes international news for a week strong, and still going. "

Yup, my entire family is enraged that this happened.
Shes a dead drug abuser that had a carrier in music, that's ALL.
Other then singing the national anthem a few times, shes done nothing for this nation or our people, she only showed us what drug abuse can do to someone "some people" looked up to. But as a nation, our flags should have never been lowered for her.

I would vote (yes) if this was ever in a poll of things to be changed, yes it would be constant reminder, and yes..like stated above..while the flag may never come back to full mast, but when it does..we are at peace, or at best..someone didn't die today.
:salute

Flags half-staff?

Who let this happen in NJ?
Governor Chris Christie. Bad move on his part.
-
Your honor, I call BS on the subject
-
I don't remember a time the posters on this forum ever agreed on anything, this is a first.
Rather than use this as an educational tool to help prevent addiction, they glorified her in death.
-
Governor Chris Christie. Bad move on his part.
Agreed. This move has probably had more negative effects on him then his latest veto.
I think the deal is because we did it for Clarence Clemmons. (which I also disagreed) with. but now a precedent has been set. American flag should be lowered for those that served the state or nation.
If they want to lower a flag in remembrance of someone famous from the state that died. They should lower the state flag. Would seem to make more sense.

you dont want to get into this.
One of our women might hear of it and come and beat you up.

Here is South Dakota, the governor orders Old Glory to half mast whenever a member, former or present, of the SD Legislature passes away. Same goes for any peace officer who died in the line of duty.
I think the governors should be able to command state flags be at half mast for a state "hero" or other such dignified person, but not Old Glory. The U.S. flag should be reserved for *nation* people in dignified positions, and the length of time at half mast should depend on who it was. Medal of Honor recipients, US Presidents, and maybe a handful of others should get 20 days +, congress-critters 10 days +, and others 5 days.
IMO, Whitney Houston, no matter how beautiful of a voice she had, did not deserve having Old Glory at half mast. However,... under the present system I can see why Gov. Christie did so.
-
They put the flag at half mast for most anyone or anything these days.
It no longer means anything.

Even if she was not a drug user and had died by other means, I still do not see why entertainers other than maybe a very select few who have done an extraordinary amount of volunteer work with the troops abroad should be honored by the half mass flag.

I still do not see why entertainers other than maybe a very select few who have done an extraordinary amount of volunteer work with the troops abroad should be honored by the half mass flag.
Only one that I can think of completely deserving is Bob Hope.
I remember my grandfather telling me stories of how they literally corralled him and his company inside a chain link fence as the officers on site were nervous there would be deserters. Feeling like animals, they noticed one guy arguing with the highest ranking officer on site. A few minutes later, a makeshift stage was placed over one end of the fence and that same argumentative guy walked over. Turns out it was Bob Hope who did an impromptu show for all the men there, after ensuring creature comforts of home (donuts and coffee primarily) were ordered over from a nearby base. Hope wasn't assigned to that area that day, he just happened to drive by the situation and decided to do his duty and attempt to make the troops forget where they were and where they were going, even if for a short time.

Take back Joe Piscopo
