Anyone got this or planning on getting it? I have heard of it from some others while playing World in Conflict online but haven't heard anything about the game overall.
-
First I'd heard of it, then I got this email from gamersgate today :D
(http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-WEE/wargame-european-escalation?aff=ggnews)

I got an email a while back look up the trailer for it online. Really well done makes the game look great. I heard these games have a real high learning curve and a slow pace though. Well so does AH.
-
Yeah I imagine it does have a high learning curve and I am looking at it seriously; just don't think I want to spend the money before I play a demo of it. Especially once I buy it on STEAM it is mine. Even if I don't like it.
-
hey reschke whats your in game name in WIC online?
-
I don't remember since I gave the game to my son and he loaded it up on my old gaming rig and is in a "clan" that is the GPW clan. I will look it up and post here later tonight.

Trukk and I have played Company of Heroes ever since it came out. hoping that this one is as good as it was. may end up playing it for a few years.
-
Looks cool. Wonder if European terrain is detailed with correct locations.
Everyone knows any invasion into Germany comes through the Fulda Gap :aok
When I was in 2nd Armored Div, Kirsche-Goens, Germany (The Rock) in the 80's we went on alert monthly, to our battle area
covering approaches from the East, against Warsaw Pact forces in the Gap.
Funny thing is, all newer bridges located near the former East-West German border
are arch type bridges. Reason - they were pre-set with explosive charges.
Another interesting thing. You see manholes everywhere, in unexpected places, like
a one lane road paralleling a farmer's field. Reason - Ammunition caches.
I had the experience of doing border augmentation tours, in relief of 11th or 4th ACR,
doing dismounted patrols in the "Tri-zonal Point", where East-West Germany and Czechoslovakia borders met.
Was a great experience.
Oh, back to the game. Looks like in might be good tactical/strategic game.
 Oz

What is it a multi-FPS or what?
-
I saw the trailer for it..was excited...then I saw the part where the infantry just rushes forward like lemmings firing their rifles at an Abrams tank.
.... and my interest disappeared.
-
The infantry have anti-tank weapons like M-72 and RPG-7, they just need to get close enough. Shooting at the tank with rifles can stun the crew or destroy sensitive components like sights and scopes. The Soviets actually did train for human-wave attacks against tanks.
Only played the first mission so far. The game is pretty good!
-
Have played a couple more missions and I like it very much. It's a new take on old school RTS, reminiscent of the Close Combat series. You have a limited force pool and losses are final (although other allies join the fight in Germany later on adding their units to your force pool). Your units retain their experience gain from mission to mission, and you earn "command stars" for achieving objectives allowing you to unlock more advanced units from your force pool.
It's like Close Combat + R.U.S.E = Awesome :aok
-
I guess what im trying to say is that the AI is no better than the one from command and conquer 1. If it was more like the AI from the close combat series I'd be a whole different story. In close combat you had to triple order an infantry to attack something he couldn't kill because the soldier would refuse the order twice and the third time was sort of the override command...and that infantryman was very likely to panic before he even begun said unwise attack. THAT is good AI.
-
Well, in this game most if not all infantry units have AT capabilities. It's modern day NATO vs PACT after all.
-
I don't know if you've seen any actual game play videos, but here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1-xeUaQpq0

Before I buy it. Is it more of a sim than a game and is the learning curve high?
-
It's a cross between a tactical squad based game like Close Combat and a strategic RTS like Supreme Commander. I wouldn't call it a sim.

I loved World in Conflict and after watching this I think this looks pretty similar. I'll probably buy this.

Bought.

I have. Look at the unit behavior is what im saying. BMP's unload the rocket infantry which just stays together behind the trucks standing there as shells land all around them. The moment they are ordered to shoot they instantly fire rockets and advance a bit to keep firing... in formation, on foot.
Its command and conquer type AI ... simplistic 'do this till you die' stuff.
I admit the graphics and the interface do seem very well done but in the end, for me, the essence of a wargame like that is not in ordering mindless robot units around... thats why I liked the close combat series so much. Order a unit to do something and they'd panic, refuse, hide or surrender when under extreme pressure.
Maybe ill pick up this game in a year or two when its price drops to 10 bucks.

it seems much more in depth than world in conflict also. i dont know though. there better not be nukes
-
I'll pass. The game doesnt "Look" good at all graphics-wise and you get no trigger time yourself.

WiC has a more involving story line, and is more of a tactical game. European Escalation has a short video briefing in between missions and no cinema style cut scenes during play. It's more of a pure RTS.
-
The game is more strategic than WiC and slower paced. In order to be successful you have to be able to multitask more. If you mess up in unit placement the maps are so large that you wont be able to catch up with the enemy.
-
I miss the old Avalon hill games
