the wife and I were sitting down, I was flying, she is on her facebook, kids watching TV....
absolutely no lie....all of a sudden we hear a VERY loud Crack...only way to describe it...happen...in the room WE WERE IN ... :O it almost sounded like gun fire but was to high pitched for that....all the kids were freaked out pretty badly....sounded like one of those old poppers but 100 times louder...my boy says he say a flash.....no bad smell....nothing like that after...
I am sitting here 3 hours later still trying to figure out what the hell it was. :headscratch:
I am stumped
very strange indeed.
-
Something wooden and structural in a piece of furniture most likely. It's amazing the energy a beam of wood in a couch or chair can store. When it lets go it can be a very loud sound.
-
Electrical?
-
PFD I am going through the room and cant find anything at all... there is not a whole lot of furniture in here and if there was a flash like the boy says, cant be that....
Karnak I was thinking that but wouldn't it have some kind of smell? and besides that all the outlets are fine...no windows broke....nothing out of place.... I am seriously stumped, wife and I are talking about it right now, she is freaked out....trying to tell her that it was something that is simple, but she don't believe me...hell I don't think I do :(

Ball lighning perhaps, sir?
If nothing else, just tell it to your wife to calm her down.

Alex Jones would know :noid

Flash bang grenades don't phase the ink family.
-
Ink,
Check your fuse panel see if you have a burnt fuse or popped circuit. If it was electrical something should be amiss with the panel.
A breaker will pop or a fuse will blow if it's a short to prevent a fire in most cases.
As PDF said it could be lumber related also,a floor joist or ceiling joist/roof truss can make loud noise if it fractures.

fuse panel is no where near us couldnt have been that,...
I am going with a board snapping in the ceiling.... :noid

no cops accompanied it though :D
-
I understand the panel may not be near you but a wire could have shorted and caused an arc and loud bang.
If the fuse panel is ok then you can pretty much rule out an electrical issue!

Because the guy who threw it got a look at whose house they were about to enter!
-
one time a vase that was glued down on the top of our cabinets flew about 7 ft across the room and hit my mom in the head.
probably a ghost

Does your house have aluminium cladding Ink?

She's wrong. There is a perfect explanation for this.

I was once in a car which was struck by lightening which gave exactly the same effect you describe.

It definitely reminded me of electricity....or if you slam a book on a table...quite loud and in the room with us...
still no clue

no I quit drinking 17 years ago....there is an old saying "instant stunninghunk.... just add alcohol"....ya that was me bad.

Check your foundation. Had a sound of a shot gun blast at my place a few years ago. Next day see a nice big crack in our wall. With the cost to fix, I'd rather it been a ghost.
-
I remember watching the video below; this lady is describing similar boom in Michigan and 2nd day she found this cracks around the house;

Ball lightning would smell.
A disturbance in the ground can cause an electrical event.
-
Ink, check your breaker panel and grounds around the house, and maybe your foundation. My best bet is it's a wooden house or maybe you have wooden floors. It's been an unusualy dry winter for many parts of our country, and in the winter the air is always dry so my best guess would be natural/seasonal wood expansion stuff going on - things are just starting to warm up, the air is getting moister, and some regions are having very wet springs or late winters to makeup for the dry winter.
I had a friend who had a one-off designed house on a hillside here in LA, the ground floor was actually on two level, one offest 1/2 a story from the other. Due to the design of the house it has this huge wood beam running its entire span above and parallel to this offset between the two floor slabs. One of these slabs was solidly planted on the bedrock, the other isnt and "floats" compared to the other. Nothing was unusual until the northridge quake, but then some liquidfaction or settling happened under the free slab. The result for the past 20-years, his roof is steadily and constanly unzipping itself along this beam (I'm guessing at least a 12x18) and this beam makes the loudest pops, cracks, and sometimes moans at least once every other day... could probabley have some fun with the place if it could happen on command during halloween.

Did the flash include 50 or more teenagers showing up at the same time?

A neutron

That, or you wouldn't by chance have a house cleaner/maid? :D
-
Dolby is right it was a Photon torpedo aimed at a Romulan warbird :old:
Was the space time continuum disrupted at anytime in your living room? :old:
If so that could be the cause of said loud noise, was there a smell of eggs after said noise? :old:
We hope as a community that we can assure INK that this large "Noise" or "Crack" will not reappear and disrupt his game play.
I thank you all for your input on a such important topic of loud noises and smells :old:
-
Did you smell Ozone after the flash?
-
I was thinking part of the house structure as well. If you can check the floor board supports and maybe in the ceiling also. The question would be did anyone feel a thump?
I would also check all the electrical switches, lights, and outlets to see if any are not working. Please do install smoke detectors throught your house. An electrical fire is one of the worse, it can slowly build up behind the walls and before you know it the place is totaled. I would prepare the family for a fire just to be safe.

joist

Check outside near any power lines.....look for a dead squirrel.
If they get on the transformer and touch the primary bushing, many times they will die on top of the pot. Sometimes I find them laying there nothing more than a skin and bones....

My knees pop kind of loud.
edit:loud

That sounds very similar to when your house is struck by lightning. You dont hear the thunder because it travels outward from your location but you do hear the electric SNAP-POW of the charge hitting the house and the flash of light.
-
we had a tree limb fall on top of a transformer, it lit the whole roadway up glowing red. we thought the house was on fire. I tend to agree, may want to check floor joists and roof rafters, collar ties etc. cant explain the flash though
-
:rofl
you guys make me :rofl
still aint figured it out but whatever, the wife thinks it was a ghost :rofl
not that I dont believe in supernatural crap, but they don't bother me...that is until they tell me to "get out" :rofl

I lived with my Grandmother in a house built in 1750.
There were lots if ghosts in the house :old:
-
Ink,
Like I said if it's electrical you'll see it at the panel, blown fuze or poppped circuit. If it's structural you may never find it,a joist can crack along the grain and make a tremendous noise but show very little visual damage.BTW this is common in older homes that use real lumber!
My home was built in the 40's real 2x4's not these 1 and a half by 3 and a half junk they use today! The wood is so old and dry you can hardly pry a nail from it and the house creaks all the time. Ya and my wife thinks we have ghost's too,she can hear them walking around,I tend to beleive it's the wood shrinking or expanding with the season changes.
If you heat in the winter it will dry the wood, then shut off heat and the moisture is absorbed and the wood expands and make a hellava noise.
Another thing that can cause a loud bang is gas or water lines, though not as common it's been known to happen, ever heard pipes knock when you shut a tap or open it? It's the reason they use bumper pipes around clotheswashers and water heaters.
Of course YMMV.

Why not go with "the dog did it"? This seems a very involved evasion of guilt.
Oh, wait, you said it DIDN'T have an odor........... :D
