Title: Commissioned Artwork
Post by: TeeArr on May 10, 2012, 10:46:49 AM
As most of you know, I was an Officer in the USAF.  I recently commissioned a nationally (and internationally) known artist to render "My" Bird.  He has done mostly WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam planes for guys like Dick Cole (Doolittle's Co-Pilot in "The Raid"), Bud Anderson, Leo Thorsness, Ken Dahlberg, Joe Foss and George McGovern.  He also interviews each of the pilots who flew the planes he draws.
If you go to his website, you can see the first iterations of my project, and see plus read about the projects he has done in the past.
Although I have commissioned this project, it really isn't about me, but rather all the men and women who did this job, and others like it all throughout the Cold War.
Even if my particular project doesn't interest you, the other stuff he has done will...it is magnificent.
You can see his work (and yes, my project) at
www.JohnMollison.com .

what years were you with the minuteman program? My uncle Fred White was also an officer in the USAF and worked with the Minuteman III in the early 70s. Not sure the exact years, I'll ask my dad when he gets home today.

Tupac, I was on Missile Crew roughly 1980 through early 1985.
I then flew with the 4th ACCS (ABNCP, Looking Glass) for a bit as an Airborne Launch Control Officer, and several years in Missile Maintenance at Ellsworth, AFB, until I went in a different direction with my career around 1988.

Very beautiful artwork indeed!!!

It's funny, because that's my current mission now: Protect the ICBM's at Malmstrom AFB.

I'm not going to lie, while I love the Air Force, I am not a fan of the ICBM's. For Security Forces, it means a world of agony at times, like sitting security for a site at -25. Or spending up to 5 days out in the "missile field", without the benefit of deployment pay thats awarded to other career fields when they spend the same amount of time from home, approx. 6 months out of the year.

Shoot, all I wanted to do as a cop was patrol work and gates, then deploy here and there. None of those happen a nuke bases.

But on the flip side of things, it's driven me more than ever to get my education done so that I can hopefully commission and go on to flight school, ALO, or hell back as a SF officer somewhere.

USAF2010, I remember having to send you guys out in the cold for hours on end to guard those sorties for an IZ or OZ alarm that wouldn't reset.  The guys in the capsule know what you are doing, and how very important it is.  Next time you are on duty at a MAF, ask the Capsule Crew if you can get a tour in the LCC.  I did that for my security cops when I was on crew.  I felt it built cohesiveness between our two organizations.
You and I know that being a Security Policeman is one of the toughest jobs in the Air Force.  Horrible hours and conditions, slow advancement and really tough tests for getting promoted.
This is one of those jobs that doesn't get the glory, but when all is said and done, there are a lot of people you may have never met who count on you to do the job you do, every time you do it, and 100% correctly every time.
Good luck to you, and thanks.  You are doing a great job.
