As the target command is, you have to face north to make use of the target.
In a forward firing gunned aircraft that's fine. A bit cumbersom offline with bombers to test gun positions. Nearly usless for testing manned guns and GV. I'm proposing an update to the target command to allow changing where the center of the target is spawned.
New Target Command: .target (yd) (0-359)
(0-359) is a compass heading so that you can move the target around bombers while testing gun positions. Or to set the target to a clear feild of fire for 2000-5000 yards to test manned guns and GV guns.
I was thinking of asking for an elevation function for manned ack gun use "only" to help in learning the 37mm, 17lb and the 88 to understand the amount of elevation needed to drop the round into a target higher than your gun position. Besides shooting at aircraft, many GV bases have hills and mountains next to them with enemy spawns. The (ft) part of the command would be usable independant of the (yd)(0-359) functions to adjust elevation after setting the distance with manned guns.
New Target Command: .target (yd) (0-359) (ft) or condition linked sub command: .target (ft)
Practice makes perfict.

I like it, it would be easier to practice in bombers, not always having to face one direction.

Why not just have the target spawn in the direction you are looking. Say your gun sight for instance.

I'm looking at it as a micro controlable tool to assist in learning guns and manned gun elevation.
We already have a simple tool. Just fly North and it stays in front of your gunsight. Find a northerly facing runway over water for manned guns and tanks. The target sticks half out of the water or ground. It does not have the ability to place the target center 2000 yards away 2000 feet high. Or locate it on a heading that takes advantage of the openings between trees and shrubs.
Years ago someone asked for a bombing target that layed out flat on the ground. Think about dive bombing and rocket attacking where you could look at the target results as big bullet holes to gage your release aimpoint. But in that case you just park a tank drone on your runway and use the comp sight. Ground to air gunnery is a tad more complicated in that most players really dont know where their rounds from a soft gun are impacting at 2000yd 200-2000 feet in the air during a base attack.

Bustr I think this is a great idea. What took you so long? How much coding would something like this take do you think?
-
I'm only asking HTC.
I have no clue about their code and leave it up to HTC as the expert on it to decide. I've found this works best over the years as a good way to relate to HTC on these matters.

i wish when you typed .target xxx it would just show up in front of you no matter what direction you are flying.

Hitech,
Which ever of the requests in this post you chose to introduce from the most complex to the simplest.
Thank you. Any one of them will help players offline..... :)

:aok I like it. can we use 3d polar coords?
.target (yrds) (0-359)(0-359).
This way you can shoot up or down and test house gravity effect bullet drop at different elevations.

New command is .target Yards [Heading] [Pitch]

Nice this should help players alot,I'll have to learn to use it properly but it seems it wil be simple enough.

if it's not too much trouble can somebody explain what he means? i am used to the .targed yards [spray][pray]

Semp,
basically instead of having the target face due north at xxx range you can now set xxx range and xxx degrees,so south west north or east and every degree on the compass. Also you can change the pitch from level, assume 0 to and I'm assuming here as I havent tried this out yet but 90 degrees up to 90 degrees down.
So you could get into the ball turret and have the target 45 degrees below at 300 yds facing south!
This is a great training tool because it has so many applications.

probably much more work to program into the game, but any way to make it so players have the option of changing the shape of the target to a selected plane silhouette also?
-
Hows about drones that tow target banners near bombers and fighters. Or fixed gunner stands on a range with track and a wheeled target on it that gets pulled at speed left or right 90 degrees of your position. Thats how much of gunnery training took place. Once you get to a 1 to 1 sillouett, why not just chase the drones in the circle?
The drones and the original north facing target complemented each other for many years. You can shoot at the drones from almost any mannable gun platform in the game while offline while using the lead comp gunsight. But, up till now you could not get feedback against a fixed target on the results of your elevation at distance higher than 90ft for your mannable cannon on the ground.
Have you ever wondered what the real elevation relationship is in your gunsight when shooting at fighters from the 37mm manned gun?

This, it will be a really useful offline and training tool. Can't wait, and Bustr is already posting in our forums about taking a week off from work when its released, that is if he wasn't already retired. :aok

When can we expect the change to take effect ... next patch?
