Title: Another thing to never do again
Post by: eagl on June 05, 2012, 10:44:46 AM
Another thing to never do again:  Don't leave blue painters tape on the wall/door/frame more than a day or two especially if exposed to the weather.

Imagine pulling about 200 ft of tape off of a wall, one flaky square centimeter at a time.  And then go back to try to remove a 1/4 inch by 50 ft strip that has chemically bonded to 30 yr clear outdoor caulk, 1/4 inch at a time, without removing the caulk since it's sealing up a big double door.  Yea.  Don't ever do that.

Owning rental property I had enough "never do again" for example working on a live Breaker box and rubbing a ground wire on the hot, produces a nice big bang and your pants get crapped.

Other things like taking the battery out of a drill after using it, otherwise have the trigger depressed on some tool and drill out your work bag.

Penetrating blaster works great unless you throw a cigarette down next to a lawnmower then use PB to loosen up the blades to take them off - and hit the cigarette causing the entire bottom of your deck to catch fire.

Never stick a handful of self starting 1.5 inch nails in your back pocket, because if you forget about them and sit down, you might have a nasty gash on your ass.
Lets see, Degreaser on the hands isn't much of a problem anymore, one little paper cut and degreaser causes extreme pain - normally wear gloves but forget about it half the time.
Poison for the septic tank is a fun novel, never stick your face RIGHT over the pipe while running hot water (since it activates the drain cleaner) you get knocked out in 2 seconds and pass out.
Weed killer (the real stuff used by CSX) works great unless your sprayer trigger gets depressed while you are riding around the property (Being in a trailer attached to a lawnmower) - all the grass from point A to point B gets killed.
Lets not forget about filling the small trailer behind the lawnmower with trash and hitting a bump and have it flip over spewing garbage all over the place.

Could probably think up another 100, but these are just off top of my head within last 6 months heh. I did have one good catch though, recently filled my fire extinguishers up (licensed to do so) and had a guy who broke down on the main road at night time, was out side having a beer when I seen flashes drop from his engine - I picked up one of the extinguishers and ran over telling him to get out of the truck - the guy was COMPLETELY clueless - my biggest mistake was telling him to open the hood, it should of probably exploded on me, but soon as the hood lifted flames just spew every where.

Got the fire out, although the guy wasn't to bright - I called fire department to make sure everything was out - in the mean time he's busy calling buddies on how to "repair" the damage so he can drive off. Yeah, pretty sure every wire in that engine compartment was gone at this point.
Two hours later he finally calls a tow truck, never even bothered to say thanks - jerk.

Never stretch cling-film over the toilet bowl and then put the seat down.

I set it up to play a prank on a friend.

His Mother used the bathroom.

never take a dog skull that has been sitting in the desert sun for who knows who long...throw it in a pot to boil what little meat is left on it....then after an hour lift the lid and take a big whiff like you are cooking some big spaghetti dinner

Well, ya know, over 2500 years ago the law of Moses forbade eating road kill....must have been a reason for that.  :neener:   :rofl

Not sure what your blue tape is like but here it is 3-5 day tape.... in anycase...assuming this is paper tape and not pvc  .... try using a rag with some meths.... wet the rag and run it slowly across the tape ....just do a little at a time 500mm or so....Try to only run it over the tape... you will have to experiment with the speed just enough to let it soak through to the glue.... Also take a sharp utility knife and a straight edge and score the tape and caulking join...deep enough to cut to the tapes thickness. This way you will keep your seal even if you peel some of the finished paint work...then leave it to dry for a day...sand back to a feathered edge and touch up (If you happen to pull any paint off)

Thanks!  Those tips sound good.  Yes it is paper tape and I've been using just water so far, to keep from eating up the paint/brick/caulk.  3 days in the TX sun would probably be the maximum time before it started baking on.  I waited... not going to say exactly how long since it's embarassing.  But it was a long time.

Never work on your roof on a windy day without securing your ladder. No I didn't fall off but while I was up there the ladder blew down.

Luckily I had a cell phone on me and the neighbor was home. I'm way too old to be jumping down from roofs.

Never, and I mean NEVER, cut a piece of 1/2" cold rolled rod in a vise with a hacksaw at a 45 degree angle with your left hand on the front of the hacksaw frame and your right on the handle.  Frickin bullseye on the tendon between the base of your finger and the second knuckle.  EXPENSIVE.

Hmmm from the sound of things you may find you will have to cut the line and really soak the tape.... (the meths shoudn't affect the caulk).... Hard tape is a nightmare... soak it hard with meths and scrape with a sharp blade... just keep the blade as flat as possible....

Never touch a unmarked dull looking switch on a plane type you are very familiar with out of boredom in a long IFR flight.  Your ' I wonder what this button duuuuh' will disconnect your autopilot, reset your com/nav panel to unknown frequencies and disable your 6 pack for 30 seconds while the computer reboots itself.

'Touch only the shiny switches' is taught about for a reason.

well this past weekend I did 2 STUPID things. First I was outside finishing a fence got a horrible headache, so I go in the house and get "excedrin migrain"  hmmm these look different but it has an M on backside so I take 2, come to find out it was oxycotton :old: :old:always have wife relabel pills
2nd stupid moment, our ac is a 220 and it started dimming lights so I go to basement and the breaker is buzzing when compressor kicks on.  I pull breaker out and say to myself"hmmm why does this buzz?"  so very very very dumb I stick my finger in and touch the tab the breaker hooks onto.NEVER NEVER do this as it does hurt :old:

was the second caused by the first?

One that happened to somebody else: using a chopsaw to cut string.  He didn't lose anything but had his hand tied pretty tightly to the blade.

Good place for a story  :D.... When I was back from Korea, I stayed on the folks Dairy for a few weeks R&R,  I was headed out one morning, my mom says, "Hey check you engine before you start it. :bhead  The cats sleep on it cause it's warm...you don't want cat guts & fur burning on your exhaust all day". So I lift the hood & there's this calico sitting sleepily behind the air cleaner. I reached in to get him off the engine (I had petted this cat on the door step the previous morning), this cat turns into the Tasmanian Devil doing a scratching, biting twister...as I run around screaming and slinging my arm(I was wearing John Travolta's baggy sleeves  just so the cat had more to hang onto). My mom yells, "Well why did you try to pick up that wild thing?" I said, "He was purring and letting me pet him yesterday". She says, "No that was the twin right here on the porch".(Exact markings) The nice one was curling around Ma's leg...I finally got shy of that devil cat, had to throw away my prized "Saturday Night Fever" :aok  shirt, & mom bandaged me up. Wasn't funny at the time, but we still giggle about it.  :old:

Never, under any circumstances, should you dice up a fresh habanero pepper and then decide to itch your family jewels.

I sat in a bathtub of ice water for an hour with tears streaming from my face.

If you ever do this in the future, take the skull to a river or pond that has crayfish in it and deposit it.  They WILL clean every bit of meat off of it.  Just make sure to routinely check it every couple of days as when they are finished with the meat, they start working on the bone.

We had a Bully in High School PE, every time the coach looked the other way he would way-lay some smaller kid (I was one of them but ya can't tell now), so we caught him the next day with his locker open & unattended. We Atomic Balm'd his Jockey Strap....about 10 minutes into a hot sweaty work-out...warm shower dilates all the pores & it just burns worse... :devil He wasn't such a bully after that...? wonder why?  :rofl

same thing with fiberglass insulation,  :old:cold shower after and a nice heavy coat of baby powder before pawing around in the stuff.  We us a mineral wool at work which is basically stone melted down into a blanket form to insulate around chimneys, I had wrapped the chimney before hand and then crawled by and my shirt lifted, some of the fibers went down my back wanted to dig my skin off
