Will probably go this weekend to see it. looks like it will be good
-
I thought it was excellent. Classic Ridley Scott, slow paced scifi-horror with stunning visuals and great acting. Hope this isn't his last foray into the Alien universe.
-
still trying to find a 2D screening ... :bhead
-
I warn you though... It's a love/hate kind of movie. It's not for all. If you like slow paced atmosphere and mystery you'll probably like it. If you prefer a thrill ride of action and effects, you won't like it.

ATTN SPOILER There was a fair amount of action. The effect of sitting thru it in 3D IMAX is like being in a gun fight. The visuals and audio are so stunning and loud I was kinda overwhelmed and lost the story a bit.
Probably the "Alien" fans will be most dissapointed, or at least a little confused. Its still worth seeing tho just for the visual impact.
Correct me if Im wrong but the planet Prometheus goes to is an entirely different planet then what was in Alien. Alien went to LV 423 and Promethus went to LV426. The gas giants in both movies have a different amount of planetoids around it as well. Theres a lot for Scott to pull together in the sequal to make it all make sense.
-
SPOILER WARNING!
Rich, you got the planets' numbers mixed up, but otherwise you're right. In Alien they find a derelict spacecraft on LV426 that's likely been there for thousands of years since the remains of the pilot had petrified. The planet in Prometheus is LV223 and likely the point of origin of the alien spacecraft in Alien, on its way to somewhere (possibly Earth?) with a shipload of bio weapons (aliens) when something went wrong. In Prometheus they reanimate an "Engineer" that has been in stasis for thousands of years. What I got from the opening plot was that perhaps some sect or faction of the "Engineers" seeded Earth (and who knows how many other worlds) with their DNA, thus creating the very first life here. That means the "Engineers" must have been around for at least 3.8 billion years. For some reason another faction (or the same guys just changed their minds) is trying to undo what they did.
Another theory I have is that LV223 actually used to be an inhabited planet of the "Engineers" (or at least one of their worlds), a welcome site so to speak, and that another of their "child species" followed their cave drawing instructions and came to visit. A conflict ensued that destroyed the "Engineers" at LV223 and they've decided all their "children" are threats and must be wiped out.
Anyways, it's a good film with many unanswered questions. I'm looking forward to any sequel Scott decides to make.
Edit: It's LV223...
-
And there's also the semi-religious angle... According to an interview with Ridley Scott we may have crucified an Engineer diplomat about 2000 years ago.
-
well, thanks to the reviews...i'll wait for the dvd and add it to my alien/predator collection... :D

Alien :noid
Had a (head) smashing good time
 Oz

I dont think they changed their minds. Lol. The gas Giant is in the same system as Aliens gas giant is, "so stated by Ridley Scott", an actual system 35 light years away. So there are two gas giants with moons in the system. Also the ship in Aliens looks like it made a landing instead of crashed and no doubt a little creature in the ole chest made the driver pull over and trip his beacon before mama dragon came out of him. So he was probably OTW to earth to wipe out the little people they themselves made, why I dont know other then humans can be schmucks.
The "engineer" woken from stassis was none to happy to see us thats for sure. Many questions still to be answered.

3.8 billion years and all we have to look forward to is an escalated form of war.. sounds like a great time.

How could they just write Bob right out of the plot??
-
Finally got to see it tonight.
I have to say I'm very disappointed with some of the details. Horrid writing. Normally I don't get affected by just dumb stuff, but this one crossed the line..
The FX and plot were great.. but there were 2 buzzkills for me.
The first was when they had taken the skull/helmet into the ship and were examining it. No way would they start injecting some electrical stimulus so soon during the analysis. That blew the credibility of them being real scientists out of the water.
The second was when the geologist and the other guy, that had been left in the cavern during the storm, went into the room with all the black ooz.. then when the alien snake looking thingy showed up, the one guy 'oohed' and 'ahhhed' over it like a freakin' puppy. Just plain stupid. That point in the movie ruined it for me.
The writers could have done a hell of a lot better job than that.
-
Liked it but I can't say it was everything I've been waiting for but really, can anyone?
I remember seeing the 1st one in 3rd grade and being scared to the point of not being able to sleep too well for a while. Luckily after about 3 weeks I started talking again and stuff.
-
that movie is so bad I have trouble pointing what is worst.
No characters, bad acting, stupid and predictable plot. By showing too much it's not even scary. The link with alien is strung out at best, if not illogical.
Special effects are ok but are not advancing the story one bit. The design is made to look cool by modern standards, but with the story happening before alien is not credible one bit. As others pointing out, the "scientific" stuff is just laughable, the reactions totally stupid.
What a huge disappointment.
-
I want to know what happens when they get to the Engineers' home.. :noid
-
Yes.
-
Uranus is a gas giant. Correct?
-
Mine sure is!
*SPOILER*
As for the movie, one glaring problem I had in it was the size of the alien beings(humanoid). In Alien they sure looked a whole lot bigger from my memory. The other problem, the alien humanoid should have been attacked by a hatchling Alien and impregnated, then died in his seat with the newly borne Alien bursting from his chest as shown in the movie Alien. He shouldnt have been killed by the Alien at the end like he was.
PS Theron should have watched more Road Runner cartoons. The Coyote ran in a straight line when a heavy wheel rolled after him. She should have side stepped.

Obviously theres going to be more of the story told in sequals. And no doubt had Wild E Coyote done a sidestep the spaceship would have decided to tip over on THAT side he stepped into. She had it coming anyway even if she's easy on the eyes.
Remember the Alien series happened on a different planetoid in the same star system. Prometheus and Alien did not happen on the same planetoid so obviously theres more to the story.

It was kind of a letdown, considering how good Alien was. The effects were great but the story was uninspiring and seemed like a big budget version of a teen slasher movie. Still can't figure out what the beginning scene had to do with the rest of the movie. And the alien that comes out at the end looks like lame cgi and showing it in bright lights takes away all that made the original scary. It was mildly entertaining but like Alien3 and everything afterwards, I only need to see it once. :(
-
Thought it was fairly week. Would not go see it again.
-

My interpretation was that it was where the first DNA was introduced to that planet ( presumably earth ). The fellow consumed the ooze and then had a DNA breakdown.. and new DNA was formed in its place. That also implies the race was around a LONG time ago, if that was the source of evolution.
My $.02.

Just saw the nearly four-hour long Furious Gods: Making Prometheus documentary. How the movie was made is almost more amazing than the movie itself. A lot of what I thought was CGI was in fact some of the most amazing prosthetic, makeup and animatronics I've ever seen. The "Engineer" the alien creatures, the huge sets were all... well... real. They used the largest film stage in Europe and enlarged it by a third to fit their largest sets, which were more than 300 feet long!
If you get the opportunity to see this documentary I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I've got $20 for to say that Vickers is a robot.
-
I had high hopes for the film but was very disappointed when I watched it. Much of it completely defied logic or just plain didn't make sense and I think the whole thing was a lot more 'eye candy-centred' than sensible content. I also become dismayed at the whole re-imaging concept. Go and make some new concepts up if you start to run out of ideas. You're getting paid enough :old:

I heard mixed reactions, so waited until i got the Blu-ray. One thing you MUST do if you are doing a sequel/prequel. Get the freaking detail right, do it with an obsession, or back off and leave it well alone. Some points that were bad -
Alien queen relief on wall even though it hadn't evolved to that stage yet.
characters that are cowards, then suddenly brave ( and vice versa) get the characters right for crying out loud.
You can't omit the engineers sudden change in attitude to humans with zero explanation, there has to be a hint somewhere.
This film felt like the glue holding it together was missing, so much potential and so wide of the mark
Oh and if you advertise an alternative beginning and ending on the box, make sure there IS one and not some bs marginal re-edit and add some cgi engineers. Very disappointed and a missed chance for a classic.
-
LOL you are funny, this not right, thats not right.
I enjoyed the movie, great atmosphere, finaly a great Sci-fi after a long time nothing out there.
I think i saw it 10 times allready, ofcourse in 3D!
I hope to see more, the search for the creators. Could be very interesting.
heh, good night :lol

Different people have different expectations. I love Sci-fi, but for some reason especially with Sci-fi it has to make some kind of sense.

Agreed. The knife edge balance between the futuristic stuff and the present day world, as we know it, makes or breaks a movie. I'm a movie buff and sci-fi geek sure, but if my wife (who isn't a geek at least) can spot obvious errors then the ball has been dropped.

Your own assumptions are the source of most of the "bad". Why do you assume the alien from the fist film has evolved from this one? Both ships were thousands of years old when the humans encountered them, so the "alien" in the first film could be an older, outdated, bio-weapon; and just like you can find pictures of B-17s in an USAF office somewhere, they decorated their wall...
Cowards become heroes and vice versa all the time in both real life and other movies.
What sudden change in attitude to humans? When did thousands of years become sudden? The reason might be revealed in the next film... However, why must everything be explained? I like a movie I can chew on. If you watch the DVD/Bluray with the directors commentary, you'll realize that even Scott himself don't know if the planet where the Engineer sacrifices himself in the opening scene is Earth or not. It is deliberately left as a mystery.

^agree
I liked it, so much Ive watched it a few times now :aok

the best character in this movie is a robot, that's how bad the movie is.

Like in Brade Runna? It's that way on purpose. Vickers was also a replicant.
A great film does not spell out every detail of it's plot just to placate the simpletons who need that sort of thing.
-
Vickers was also a replicant.
Was she? ;)

ok, i'll bite this time. If you are implying the xenomorph from the original film is an earlier incarnation, then why didnt the engineers simply locate the crashed ship using the beacon the Nostromo located, and finish the job?
someone who runs from a 2000 year old headless corpse then suddenly finds a wormlike creature that is crawling through slime and thinks its adorable?? yeah right, totally believable.
wether the change in attitude from the engineers was sudden or gradual, no explanation or hint is given. To me at least, its just bad storytelling.
Its not an unwatchable film by any means, i'm sure I will watch it a few more times. It would have worked better as a standalone film, change the ship and xenomorph stuff, remove wayland etc and start a new film series
-

agreed a dreadful scene, the worst of the sloppy script decisions. vickers (definitely a droid) getting crushed was cheap too. and guy pierce? cmon, if you need an old guy, hire an old actor ... otherwise it looks like a young guy in old guy makeup.
plenty of problems with the script and acting, almost no characterisation apart from david ... but overall none of it was enough to stop me enjoying the look, feel and scale of the ideas, and the unanswered questions.

I'm on the fence as to wether Vickers was a droid or not, probably not since she had the same sense of direction as many women i know.
-
Ridley Scott likes to hide androids in his films. She essentially admitted it on camera...
-
Just got through watching it. I thought it was very enjoyable. I think the guys that are bashing it might have had to high expectations. And are very nitpicky. Take it for what it is. Also, as mentioned the unanswered questions/things left to interpretation are what makes it good and what makes me like it so much.
-
the same guys bashing now Disney for making new Star Wars movies the next years!
Disney made some very entertaining and quality movies the last years, not only just CGI movies.
I dont get it, i'm very happy that we will see finaly more SW. Without Disney i doubt we would
see more from the SW Universe. Let's be honest this movies are made for entertainment,
a big pack of Popcorn and lets go... every 2 or 3 years a new Star Wars movie would rock!
As a Sci-Fi fan i dont wanna die with just 6 Episodes!!! :D
