After watching the LD vs TheFew video, got me wondering...
Someone hook a newb up with some history.

A lot is two words bone.
Ha! We were not there and the thing still failed so you can push the blame off on egos but in reality it was more people just quit doing them.

No problem I know it takes a lot out of you to think that far back.

I wouldnt light the fire again. Do you really want it? What if you just give each other one more chance and have fun in the SDL, without hoing, withouth any reason to complain, just nice fair matches?
I would be happy if that could happen once.

Good luck. No one is stopping them.
The big bad old mean squad won't be there so you would not have anything to worry about.

Jokers Jokers :ahand KN, KN was very mad.
Dbone and kazaa were persistant about wanting films. That annoyed KN greatly.
Then massive ego-peen throwing went on and on.
Everyone quit SDL and because of that I never got to play in 1 single SDL Match. :(

Okay, Sukov, come against me... was i saying anything inappropiate?...
Jo, i seen those vids. Telling you what the JJs did, way crossed the line. If you participate in an event what should be some friendly fun yet you get nothing else but the usual MA mindless ho and run, well, many would be pissed. Seen the "referee's" reaction, i did not found it fair. Anyway, what happened, cant be changed, still, might give you a reference what to avoid in the future. Is it really needed to try to annoy the KN?
Think about it. There was a reason why everyone quit.
I dont have to be a Nostradamus to predict, this thread will be a giant, mindless, very low flaming fest in no time. Is it good for you?
-
I never seen any of the films of kn vs. jj. I heard the was some hot merging going on...
It's not ok to HO in a 6v6 enviroment, but its a kill or be killed game winner lives on.

I didn't mean anything toward you personally.
The whole SDL thing could still exist if people really wanted to participate. They do not want to though and the whole "ego" excuse is convenient for them.
As for the JJvKN thing, it is way in the past if you want to go look into it I am sure the thread exists.
-
All they ever wanted was just a fair fight. They won some, lost some, but werent yelling on anyone before that - cause the others gave them fair and fun stuff. From the JJs they got the exact opposition and that made them upset. You know, the way you are playing a game tells everything about you. They went for the organizers to call them to be the referee, to re-fight it withouth hoing, yet they got punched on the nose (basically "shut it or you will get kicked out" - if i could get it). Wouldnt you go ballistic after this?
It all has nothing to do with cartoon egos. Plz do me a huge favour and stay in peace, nothing else i want right now, just peace.
As for the current SDL, if it could work like the DFC, with very exact and strict, fair-fun orietated rules, it could work again. But everyone has to step one forward and leave the ashes behind.
-
The best thing that could happen to squad play in AH is to find a way to revive the SDL. I participated in season II but that is when it fell apart. I know many of these players and squads got very ticked at each other. Sad to see such highly respected players on both sides of it.
What are the best steps to getting it back into action? I say we get a meeting of some squad COs, set some clear rules, have some umps and ease into it. But that's just me...

Count me and My boys in we have tried getting this going months back.
Like most have said its lack of interest. <--Most spout alot about wanting to revive it or bring it back but very little has been done by those.
I can honestly say I have tried. :salute

we did have about 80 matches over 2 years, only 3 had some afters.
the few vs jg11 was the first, they requested axis vs allies, and called us out for HO ing which was nonsense especially with more manoeuvrable aircraft. the drubbing was too much for stampf to take after he built it up to be some sort of epic show down. JG11 left. :(
KN vs JJ from all accounts JJ's got a few aggressive kills in the merge and caught KN by surprise, HO ing wasn't against the rules at any point even though some started adopting this tactic to get an advantage. :( I had to kick out KN because of the posts and not because I didn't agree with them. :(
Bone then made the pigs leave by sending them nasty PM's that I didn't know about. Had they made me aware of what was said at the time I could have taken corrective action but they just assumed because I was in charge it would have been swept under the carpet. :(
Pigs vs LD The pigs or rather junky and krup decided to take more than 25% fuel and climb, again nothing in the rules regarding this and they proceeded to get chased around by angry LD's who in one round ran out of fuel and had to bail. I was in the DA at the time to watch and was asked by krup and dhyran what the rules were on this and gave them as I knew them which was fuel loadouts are the pilots choice. Again accused of not acting in the correct manner :(
back in FA we had squad fights every weekend and they did have a host which in hindsight was probably the best policy just incase things spilled over. No-one questioned the host/umpire/referee and that kept things in check. Shouldn't have too but I guess that is just human nature.
The other issue was bringing MA squabbles into it, when you have a perceived view of a group of players and you have the opportunity to fight it out there is always more to a grudge match!
-

I agree with the sentiment behind this post because we suffered a similar fate in our last match but asking for the ref to do something and completely insulting their opponents is far from asking politely!!!
-
enforce cold merge by rule, and fuel loadout set by referee decision? most planes could use 50% except the P51 and alike that would get 25%
-
all pilots to record each round and save the film in case of any disputes :old:
although this is all academic anyway

well,
that was that match:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUEJbDAphAs&list=UUS_alIt0PElL5PqF1yqZiYg&index=4&feature=plcp
But it was not you who acting not correct, it was the fact that pilots from your squad spammed some of us with priv messages during the SDL battle LD vs Pigs, we had no deal with the pigs there, it was a fun match and it was my fault to choose 25% and thought that was a standard. The pigs were in advance with 2:1 and we fought back in the fourth and fith round, so it ended 3:2 for us, one of the best matches at all!
SDL was great fun, and i loved the layout!

We could do with some drama in forums again :old:

HO ing wasn't against the rules at any point even though some started adopting this tactic to get an advantage.
Then set up exact and strict rules, damn it!
Like as Boo said, let the COs sit down and stay there til they can agree in rules and regulations what everyone can accept. Does the DFC has this? Yes. Is the DFC working? Yes, noone is complaining about unfair or unsporting behaviour, everyone can enjoy the fair fights.
Anyway, check the SDL board.
-
do you think we didn't discuss the whole HO on the merge deal when it reared its ugly head? :bhead
The nature of 8vs8 isn't the same as a strict 1vs1, the most clean merges involved players being tight to their lead man so it was clear that the formation had passed and that the fight was ON however some squads preferred to do a long conga line or a tactical spread.
When the distances were too far apart you had some people IN and some that were still arriving looking to head on, because they were late to the party. I think most of the C.O's agreed at the time that they would rather risk a few head ons and get out of the way, rather than have all room for manoeuvre impeded by strict rule enforcement.
Daddog wrote them years ago and all C.O's agreed to them upon joining if there were any mis-understandings then they were always there for everyone to see. The cracking fights can only happen if all the BS is cut out and that is down to the participants and not the organiser. There was also room for a C.O to discuss and agree on any particular setups differing from the accepted norm.
-
If we started up SDL again I wouldn't mind being a neutral non-judge that simply reviews every single film for any kind of anomaly. reviewing every single film is not something anyone wants to do really, but i've been doing it for years in tournaments for other games (mainly looking for cheats).
Upgrade the rules and learn from the mistakes in the past, hopefully the Egos have learned and moved on. Make the rules where they simply will be not be "Bendable" getting caught simply you get ejected from the SDL leaving your wing 1 player down, failure to turn in a film etc.
I felt bad when SDL died, i really looked forward to jumping in on it back then, i've pretty much stopped playing right now due to being thrown out of the scenario, wouldn't mind focusing everything on getting the SDL going.
Don't think I will be flying anytime soon though.

It sounds like a few things need to be addressed, but mainly the rules/regulations simply need to evolve.
It's like the Holy Roller/Immaculate Deception incident in (American) Football... it happened, and the rules were changed.
The ground rules need to be basic, too many rules is a bad idea for many reasons... you want enough leeway for each team to show their stuff... you WANT a distinct delineation betwixt "against the rules" and "frowned upon". That's where legends are born.
Break things out with Home Team and Visitor. Now break down the configurable rules. Maps? Planes? Fuel? Gun Package(s)? Let the home team pick x rules for 2/3 of the maps, let the visitor pick x rules for 1/3 of the maps (all of this is rough at this point, but you get the idea).
The trick is consistency in application. A really simple rule that pretty much spans the tournaments I have been in, regardless of genre, over the past 15 years or so: EVERY player/pilot records a film (or demo, or playback) and MUST send it in or their team forfeits. Of course, these stipulations are agreed to prior to joining said tournament.
One thing that would get the ego hounds involved in this again would be if HTC were to post results on FB/AH Page...
It'll be months/years before I am even close to good enough to participate in something like this, but I would LOVE to watch!! Some of you guys are downright artists, and seeing your moves firsthand is amazing - and I know I am not alone in that thinking.
Why don't you all stop being little faerie puff-puffs and put your big boy pants back on and bring back the World Cup of Aerial Asswhoopin? The unwashed masses demand satisfaction!

If enough squadron leaders were to commit to the league, and to having it run by the equivalent of summer 1945 Japanese replacement pilot skill-wise, I'd be happy to dedicate the time to restoring something like this.
The fact that there aren't more sanctioned squad vs. squad events/ladders does not speak very highly of the community at large... back in the day there was a decidedly friendlier air about the place.
What I'd really like to see is a "Fantasy Aces High" league, where everyone interested signs up... team captains are chosen from those pilots who volunteer to be such, and then a ladder battle ensues over the course of the next month or whatever. The problem with this is that it requires commitment not only to the ladder but to the TEAM they are chosen by... i.e., you've got Dolby, Bruv, Pand, and Midway on the same team... and they have to be able to perform together AS a team... or get drubbed.
I set one of these up once before, long ago, in an FPS (mod) community... it broke down under the ego burden after the first few rounds... but the draft itself made it more than worth it. With the egos around here, I doubt it'd get past the sign up phase hahahahaha
-
I wouldnt mind refereeing.
Hows this for an idea:
Anyone who wants to make an accusation about someone else breaking a rule (ho, entering the fight with an advantage AKA extra altitude) must provide film. If there is no film then no accusation can be made. Then everyone will start filming to insure that if needed they can support an accusation. Then when people know they are being filmed they are less likely to break rules, while still providing a system incase rules are broken.
Any other thoughts on this?

I would say that, as a ground floor rule, requiring EVERY player to submit a film of the entirety of the match (email, or FTP, the files aren't that big) as a qualification for eligibility immediately does the following:
1. Instantly provides the means to dispute/prove/disprove any claims
2. Fosters sportsmanlike conduct by removing anonymity
3. Publicly available download of films allows any player to learn from any other player
4. Fodder for epic AH movies is never in short supply
= Win.

This would work as well but that would be alot of film to wrangle.
I would manage it like this (using folders)
Squad Dueling League-->Round #-->Squad Name-->Then each individuals film.
If they dont submit a film they must sit out the next round.

This is extremely easy to do, I set up the 367th Squad website to upload films and photos.
Basically you need basic understanding of it, if the player can't name the film something like :
"TopGun-Butcher-Round1-Spitfire"
Second film would be:
"TopGun-Butcher-Round2-me109"
Squad name / Pilot name / Round / Plane
Think of it like Music, I have all my music listed like this:
Band Name - Year - Album Name - Song # - Song title
So easy to do, and manage, you need a webpage and simple HTML to use, Administrators get access to the FTP, everyone else can get READ access only.
Logs are kept in case of tampering (been done before believe me).
I could set this up in 15 minutes flat, have it ready so anyone can upload or download, you simply have to have an administrator make the folders so everyone can review each round / Squad etc

Really? They didn't have to review films in WWII. Why even have rules about merging and alt, etc. Just up with your squad and start downing the enemy any way you can. There were no HO merge rules or hard ceilings in RL, etc.
If the bad guys get shot down, there's no arguing about whether he's down or isn't. The winner should be obvious then.
My $0.02. :)
-
As far as rules purity go, things like HOing should (in my opinion) be left up to gentleman's agreement.
If a squad wants to be the dirty Oakland Raiders/Riverbottom Nightmare Band of the SDL, let them get that reputation and let other squads either defeat them without resorting to such tactics or adopt those tactics themselves.

Im not suggesting those rules be made. IF those rules are made though this would be the best way to manage the films. And gun camera footage was reviewed in WW2.

Because people with no skill can easily HO down 6 planes, Dueling is about competition with a fair advantage given to the winner, allowing someone to HO gives nobody an advantage. Cold merge, then everything is game after that, assuming all 6 planes are flying together, otherwise if someone uses a trail tactic to "Ho" down after the first plane does a cold merge, the squad should be disqualified.

Lol, takes a lot of skill to HO down 6 planes. Takes little skill to avoid a HO, don't line up for it.
Sounds like you get rid of these rules, and the controversy is moot. :)

The main reason I don't HO is because I know I'm probably going to get shot down anyway, so why go out like a punk ass?

Why not have a ref in each fight in a Storch over the dueling area.... let them call out "MERGED!" on 200?
After which time, anything goes... films would clear up any disputes.

Nah its easier to have 6 planes band together, form up then MERGE - what I am trying to stay away from is having people congo line into a merge, where its questionable, Its quite simple - you form up when you say ready on country channel, other guy says READY then you head towards and merge.
Films will show if someones attempting or Congo lining, because last thing you want is some tard congo lining then after the first few planes merge, goes out to HO someone.
ALL planes have to cold merge regardless of position, being last in line is the WORSE place you can be in a cold merge in this case, simply because you are the last to turn and can get a deflection shot/ Ho on ya before you can bring guns to bear.
Either way everyone still has to cold merge, Films will catch it.
-
A storch really?.... Think how long they will ha e to fly to fight. Just leave the egos at the door and keep the same sdl rules that we had and lets fight!
-

Air start, obviously :aok
But a dumb idea if there are no other penalty flags to be thrown... just picked the easiest plane to loiter in and be unmistakable in appearance...
The trick with a cold merge is we are immediately placing artificial constraints on the fight... but, if everyone is flying the same plane, that shouldn't be too large an issue.
I would recommend a textbook cold merge be filmed and a short, to the point Ground Rules of SDL film be thrown up on the Youtubez... no misunderstandings, no crying.

Rules are rules, there is no explanation or arguing - break them you lose. Not much to explain is there?

Come on! You know that the arguing is on "whether" they were broken. That's why you want it... to try and mitigate your losing by having a rule to reach for and hang on to with your finger nails, imho.
You either down or your not.... no argument there. :ahand

I believe the SDL was designed to see who the best dogfighters were not who the best HOers were.

I believe the SDL was designed to see who the best dogfighters were not who the best HOers were.
Avoid the HO then, the RL pilots had to... not hard, especially on first encounter.
There is no reason to feel the need for a head on guns on first merge. Offset some vertically and horizontally. I assure you, no way you can HO on first merge if the other guy won't let you.
-

So then you would like to see 6 simultaneous games of chicken to see who will "chicken out" first :headscratch: not exactly dogfighting.
-
Midway you clearly dont have an open mind to others ideas lol. Carry on.

Were not hoing on first merge Midway, there is a reason for COLD merge.

Wouldn't happen. Teamwork would kick in if the squad is half way decent.

Midway, you can't troll the SDL thread any longer until you get into a squad with at least *6* sticks in it.
BTW, I loved you in Return of the Jedi, sir:

huh?
Try it. You'll see. Best targets of opportunity are set up by squad members. I see it all the time in MA when one group runs into an enemy group in front of them. No reason for six guys to head on, guns on, merge with six other guys 1 on 1 If you remove the no HO rule, merges would be more realistic and carefull, and smarter.

The idea is for an equal merge. An equal fight. So the best way to make it all equal so that everything comes down to dogfighting skills is for a cold merge what you do after that determines your fate. Nonetheless Im done.

What makes it equal is you lift off around the same time in the same number of aeroplanes, after that it's up to your ability to make smart, survivable choices and being creative. :aok

I am wondering why you guys even respond to him.....he wont partake...... he has no clue how to fight....he cant give any new insight to the SDL..........he is just wasting your time......

exactly my thoughts ink! you nailed it! You have to be a part of a team, a squadron, and when we flew the SDL we had sometimes 15 in TS ch, but only 8 could fly each match. so one of our basic rules was: ego aside!
thats what keep us together, we throw the best skilled members into each round, other have to wait and listen to TS, it was a blast because it worked that way, the SDL creates a band of brothers between us
This was such a great experience, hard to decribe! c'mon lets start it up again!

we did have about 80 matches over 2 years, only 3 had some afters.
the few vs jg11 was the first, they requested axis vs allies, and called us out for HO ing which was nonsense especially with more manoeuvrable aircraft. the drubbing was too much for stampf to take after he built it up to be some sort of epic show down. JG11 left. :(
KN vs JJ from all accounts JJ's got a few aggressive kills in the merge and caught KN by surprise, HO ing wasn't against the rules at any point even though some started adopting this tactic to get an advantage.
Don't forget, in the midst of all this, there was that thing that one of you got Waystin, "the nicest guy in Aces High" (and the one guy/peacemaker going out of his way to confront the issue in a way to address/settle it), banned from the AH BBS for a week. That was real champ.
Edit: And then I read the next 5 pages of this thread. Win. :D

So not only a ho'er but a picktard aswel!?!??
-
people are trying to constructive over this, create your own troll thread if you want midway.
We ran quite a few SDL like matches within the few, and it is obvious that the team not forming together has an advantage, because the latecomers can pick any enemy they want to shoot, including the ones already engaged, and there is nothing to stop them in time. So they get a picking kill for free.
AH nowadays permits to airspawn at cruise speed, MickyD made use of this in a map (it's available in the custom arenas, can't remember the name right now) where 2 airspawns are situated in front of each other with 10K feet separation. You just need to synch your team with a countdown and your whole team spawns in a neat formation at speed at the said alt. Just hit X, WEP and your can merge. No cheating possible, no wait, just straight action.
I like what's going on in here.

ya that's it...... Butcher....... :D
Red :rofl :rofl
seriously though....
I agree we need to get it started...the SDL that is.......
the rules should be revised a bit.....Hoing should be allowed...hate to say it but it keeps a fight honest....you have to maneuver a certain way to avoid getting in your nme's guns if there were no front shots...it would cheapen the fight IMO
a fight is won or lost in the merge...... at the merge is where you want to set your guns on the nme...at the same time not giving your nme a gun solution...a HO does just that....... but if you maneuver before the merge to megre with a gun solution outside of your nme's gun solution....when you have 2 pilots that do this IE trying to merge with a solution but denying your nme a solution...this is when you know a great fight will happen win or lose......
a squad fight is a whole nother monster.....its about protecting your wingies and setting up for the picks and what not....
in both situations the HO is necessary to make the fight honest.....
burp

Yet because it was fresh, you drag it back into your house because your shoe has been festooned with it....perhaps feces decomposes faster in your home while being ground into your carpet. Fresh Poo, like what this topic will eventually devolve to, is best left to get old, cold and forgotten.

hot merge seemed a nice idea until I remembered we had the 30mm mk108 and soon mk103 cannons :noid

I dont know maybe Im getting the wrong impression but with the new air spawn and preset rules(fuel%/when does merge end and fight begin?) figured beforhand it might have a chance atleast this way any advantage other than skill/knowledge is taken out.

The two I fought in,
Pigs vs Muppets
Pigs vs LD
Seemed to go great. In fact, the only thing that would have made it more fun was if you had to fight in the canyon and weren't allowed to an alt higher than the canyon walls. Wanna talk about a knife fight? When the Brewster came out, Dodger invited the entire DA, 32 people, to a canyon fight with everyone in Brewsters...I think I logged in at 7PM and looked up and it was 3AM...it was unreal.

While back Muppets had guys on different countries (knits/rooks) and organized a mission on both countries to do a fighter sweep into each other using classic plane lineups, it was a total blast screwing around at 25k.
We should try to organize this again, it was quite fun.

The fight zone NEVER got cleared. You flew 4 mins to get there, you fought like mad using every bit of rudder, flap and elevator, you died and then you reupped...we did it for about 5 nights in a row and the fight never stopped for 5 or 6 hours. Anyone that logged into the DA got to the Lake and wondered why the login said there were 47 people in there and only 6 flying at the lake so they came over there too! I was wore-the-hell-out every single night. We did zekes, Spit 1's, 110's, Mossy's...all the a/c that should and shouldn't be flown in those tight quarters. We need to do that again. Talk about stall fighting...those canyon walls get mighty big, mighty quick.

Would ya be interested in setting it up any time soon? I'm thinking you can grab some muppets one night and ill grab TG, we work out a scenario and do a mass mission between 2 countries to face each other.
Will advertise the heck out of it and see how many numbers we can draw for the largest furball of all time.

It was I that set those up! I was trying to break up the monotiny of a typical MA evening, AAjager was gracious enough to be enlisted as my opposing mission generator. Jager and I had to postpone the launch several times before we had somewhat equal #s. Other muppets were kind enough to join my mission, then more and more peeps found it credible I guess and joined. I think the 1st fight was about 50ish vs 40ish at the merge. The second saw less #s cause a few folks got butt hurt in the 1st match up. It is difficult, like herding cats. If I remember correctly it was spit 5/ Hurry mk2 vs 109F/190A5. Simple rules were No merge HO, and coalt 5K. Most everyone thought it was very fun, we tried a couple days later and got almost no takers :( Weird bunch the AHers are :huh
If you set it up, you must be patient and let them come, a few "known names" on each side will attract those who are unsure. Choose a counter part to generate an opposing mission against you!
It was fun!!
Good luck

I'm guessing half succeed in a backflip but they couldn't counter the tendancy for it to imediatley do another half-flip, slipping into the nasty tail-first stall, and augered. The other half, snap-rolled it too fast like it were a D9 or K4 and lost yaw stability, I'm guessing? :lol
