Title: My friends plane
Post by: W7LPNRICK on August 08, 2012, 09:27:47 PM
(http://media.kboi2.com/images/120808_Plane_Crash_01.jpg)  The wife & I were in this plane 2 weeks before the crash... Les was badly injured, but is doing fine now.  :salute

His sone & sons friend were filming when they crashed. Les is my friend, the one one laying on the ground hurt.

As soon as I saw 4 people in the plane it was obvious what was going to happen...  The takeoff roll takes forever, and it looks like the terrain may be slightly rising?  In any case, overloaded plane for conditions (high density altitude) in mountain flying is a recipe for disaster.

Glad they lived.  Lots of people making that exact same mistake don't survive.

Me and a friend were talking about that and said nearly the exact same thing lol

I'm glad they all survived and I hope recovery is full for all injuries. That pilot had tons of warning and time to abort. Bad mistake.

S!@#, a Stinson?!?

Notoriously poor high alt performance, maybe the pilot thought his son and his friends were a couple years younger (and a hundred pounds lighter) than they were?

I'm glad everyone is OK and all will be well, but ohbuy... don't want to jump on the bandwagon, glad your freind is OK, wonderful little plane he lost there.

I only saw three, but in one of these:

Full boat.

This video is being discussed on every pilot website in the English speaking world, and beyond. I hope when I come to grief no one posts it online. Slim chance of that as there's usually at least three Gopros on every flight.

In my case I can see exactly how it could happen to me. So I won't pass judgement.

That engine didnt sound right. Im not an expert but wouldnt you expect more RPMs in the last part of your take off? Thank the Lord they are all OK.

Apparently the story is now on Yahoo's front page for what it's worth.

They pilot was the only one hurt & his jaw is no longer wired shut....has some teeth missing, but is up walking & enjoying life. They were 2 EMTs at the airstrip who saw them go down & 3 forest workers at a lookout above them with all their rescue gear. They had their chain saws, got to him within 30 min, cut some trees down so life-flight could get to him, & he was at St. Lukes level 1 trauma suite within a couple hours. 2 plates in his jaw, one in his cheek, & missing teeth. They sure look shook-up. He told me the air just disappeared out from under them...no lift suddenly. He almost aborted because of the lengthy take-off...not uncommon at 6,000 ft, when a gust of wind lifted them up.

He does this all the time...It was a bit late in the Day, it had gotten hot too quickly, he nearly aborted when a gust of air lifted them, he felt once up that he was committed. He's my friend so I'll defend him... :salute

Yea.  It's easy enough to second-guess after the fact.  He was experienced enough to rely on his judgement in this case.  My experience being in a somewhat different environment probably would have led to another decision, but he was the guy on the scene and of course he gets to deal with the consequences of not being right.  Again, I'm glad they all lived and will be ok.

holy cow! thats crazy!! i'm glad they are all ok! they surely had someone looking out for them that day....my mom always told me to never drive faster than my guardian angel could fly.....looks like their agel was right there with them that day....i'm sure your friend has learned from this and i'm sure this will forever be in his mind. i hope that he will not let this stop him from his love of flying. :salute

Any reason why the mixture is shown full rich?

With a DA of 10,000, think that question will need some thought

Was kinda the point. The video shows the mixture full rich so it'd be developing a lot less power at 6000 Msl, on top of the density altitude of 9,000 that the plane thinks its at

Maybe the hot air was generating a hotter than usual temperature reading in the engine so he riched it up?

Lots of speculation can be injected.

i don't think that would've done that. i've launched in a 152 at max gross weight in nearly 100f temps. granted i was at 50asl, but the oil temp showed normal. of course she climbed like a wounded duck with cinder blocks on its ankles, but it climbed........
