last night I started my career riding in an ambulance. started slow, spoke the infamous "q" word of "quiet" nights, and low and behold we get a call. Dispatch is a "code 1" (lights and sirens in my area) transfer to a level I Trauma center from a Level III. Alright, someone brought in their husband who had chest pain and it winds up being more then a heart attack me and my two partners assume, or its the girl in there earlier who loked like she was death walking. nothing amazing. Get to the ED we're transporting from, ask where the patient is we are transporting and we're told they just came out of a CT scan :headscratch:. that aint what we expected. Arrive into the room the patient is in and we find out he jumped out of a car doing 30 mph. buddy brought him to his girlfriends house, and she brought him to his parents house, who brought him to the ED. Anywho, 3 hours later after all the paperwork and transfer is done we get back to the garage. Fractured his skull in 3 places, right around his skull was split into thirds almost. braing was shifted to his right side almost 2 cm from hemorrhage and inflamation.
someone tell me where the logic to jump out of a moving vehicle is, regardless of suicidal intentionso or alcohol/drug induced actions? Admit it, we've all had our nights of too much alcohol, some of us may even be recovered drug addicts, or had suicidal intentions at one point, and im not saying its true about that, but have you ever heard a friend or you think of doing something so clearly detrimental to your life? really guy? why?

dont think about it, if you start thinking then it will end up eating you alive. your job is to take people to the er and that's it. why or how is that they had to go in is not up to you. my gf worked for 10 years in the er and right now she's in the er with acute alcohol poisoning. she cant forget what she saw. that along with a couple of other problems.

People do stupid things all the time. The problem is that technology now allows us to save their lives. Forever tainting the gene pool.

The thread title hints at the plural form of people with the word stupidity following it.
If there were an apostrophe before the s, it would imply the stupidity as possessed by people.
Any time someone wants to slag people as being stupid, they should carefully check what they wrote so as not to include themselves within the group they are slagging.........unless english is a "second language" and not the primary language of the poster.

English is a funny thing. Being English is even funnier.

Maybe he thought the car was only going 30 kmh.

No, you always remember certain events, no matter what happens. For me, my absolute worst event was being on site after a very simple low speed accident. The problem with it was one of the drivers was a pregnant woman who decided to wear her seat belt too high and the abrupt stop gave her a spontaneous abortion.
Please, if you see a pregnant woman, tell her to wear the seat belt properly.

Girlfriend said the guys friend said he was going 30 MPH, KMh. that is of course, second hand and no one knows for certain, but regardless of speed, what would possess on to jump from a moving car?

not sure if youve noticed on the bbs... proper spelling is only knit picked by a few. and even those few only do it rarely. correct? Yes, I am an EMT, yes one would "hope" I know my grammar in my "mother" tongue, being American, but no there is nothing saying I need to spell properly on an informal open discussion board, correct? In my run reports youre damn right I spell check and grammar nazi and have my partner(s) look it over make sure I didnt miss anything or mis spell anything. Difference between my license to practice medicine and the reputation of an ambulance service I represent when lawyers are involved as opposed to when im typing where no one will ever pass me in the street and know who i am, correct?

this is true, however I have met many members of ems where big events such as that dont affect them, such as my father. back in the 80's he went to a MVC and when he opened the back door a ladies foot rolled into his hands. never strayed him and he got over it. hes also seen brains splattered and poles in the front and out the back of a head. My dads father served in WWII as a Medic for Patton, he never spoke of the things he saw. Different events affect different people differently.

very aware of this, being the first "major" call one could say, mesmermized at the sheer stupidity some people have. Last summer I was at an accident (didnt have my EMT license, but did have a first responder cert), drunk guy was thrown a good 100' from his car after taking out two telephone poles. at the time I was 17, and for many people (least where I am) it would be more then enough to have seen his face, let alone the rest of him.

It's job security. Sounds cold and callous but after 21 years of it believe when I say it's useless to burn up brain cells trying to make sense of the stupid crap people do.

If you can't imagine why a person would jump out of a car moving 30 mph more power to you. I can, but then I have a big imagination. The only thing is, be careful about calling people stupid and chucking those stones. In my experience no matter how smart people are they eventually do something stupid. And I've known some pretty thick people who are probably worth ten times some fairly clever acquaintances of mine.
Remember all those smart guys that thought invading the Soviet Union was a good idea?

I tried pulling a guy out of a moving vehicle once. Not a good idea even when you haven't been consuming.
Some girl fell out of a bus last week, they were underage drinking and her friends were afraid to call the authorities because they didn't want to get into trouble. Here's the article.

I feel a need to try and top you on this. Some doctors seem to become clueless when it comes to medical issues as well. 2 examples.
During my time with the NSP I had two experiences with doctors that made me wonder if they were insane or just retarded.
The first incident happened in front of the area I worked at, it had a interstate type highway with grade intersections. A toyota corolla pulled out in front of a F150 that was traveling about 70mph. Unlucky for us a doctor happened to stop and help. After we got the driver out of her corolla and onto a backboard it was time to strap her onto it. Everything went smooth aside from her left leg. The doctor kept trying to force her leg straight in order to secure her better. He failed to take into consideration the fact that she would scream louder every time he tried to straighten her leg. He also failed to notice the large and bloody hole in her jeans about 6" above her knee joint. We had words after she left in the helicopter to say the least.
Experience #2.
I separated my shoulder while skiing. Went to the hospital after my shift ended and got some xrays taken. Then more xrays. Then xrays of me holding a bucket of sand with my injured arm. Every xray photo taken showed an obvious difference between my right and left collarbone. One side it was flush with the rest of my shoulder, on the other it was obviously above the rest of my shoulder. He showed my coworker and I the xrays eventually while trying to explain that he couldn't see anything wrong. He was quite embarrassed when we both pointed to the problem as soon as he held up the first xray.
That was definitely $500 well spent (sarcasm).

I will go on a limb and say that there is a definite percentage that are like this. There are many medical and legal professionals that aren't as well educated in their field as their license may lead folks to believe. There are countless ways to cheat on important exams and even more ghost writers for hire to complete important papers.
This does not even touch on the fact that every graduation class has a student at the top of their class and one at the bottom. Next time you go for a doctor's visit, will you be wondering where your doctor rates in that group? :D

Good point. My old school, the University Of Iowa sent home over 200 students last spring due to academic fraud. Basically their grades didn't come close to their entrance credentials and it was bad enough to get noticed.

Seriously man, I have never been there, despite living in a country famous for thirty of years of terrorism, despite years of riding motorcycles, despite years of flying, despite years of being a part time soldier. I have never seen much in the way of trauma. But I have friends who have.
Don't know how I've escaped. But have heard the stories of cops, medics and firemen. Friends of mine.
You don't want to go there. It's amazing how paramedics are so blase about what they see.
I feel lucky. Last time a paramedic friend told me an amusing story of guy who fell on a chainsaw. Ha bloody ha! I wasn't so amused but I like the guy so played along.

its one of those things...you almost to a degree get numb to things, but not really. its funny. hard to explain. Seeing things doesnt bother many in EMS, but it still "burns" them out because it does bother them, regardless of their coping skills and abilities. very funky thing...

Job security? 8 out of 10 EMT can't get a job in Idaho unless they devote years volunteering to "Ride-Along" for free, ie: Liability, hours of emotionally draining, sometime physically taxing, & dangerous work, for free, while perhaps going thru Paramedic training, to again find no jobs, without possibly years of volunteering again...almost as rough as Trauma Nursing. :salute

It's a coping mechanism. You get desensitized, many get burned out. I lost a friend last year who was a great paramedic and a great person, for some reason he decided to check out on us.

It is just a way that jealous people justify their own self worth. "That guy is a doctor and is rich yet can't even do this! What a bafoon!"
Being a doc does not make one rich. There are many who are just getting by.
I took it as he was showing the difference between book smarts and common sense/street smarts. Maybe he wasn't.
Many docs get their license overseas where the requirements are far less. Those same docs can use those licenses to get license here.
In any case I have known some really intelligent well schooled folks who were considered intelligent until they got off their narrow path.
I've also known some non-schooled folks who were extremely intelligent.
-
I've seen quite a few "book smart" types that are worthless on a fire scene. They aren't the norm but they do scare me.

If you say so. My point was, everyone has their strengths. I don't know the first thing about a car engine to the point where CAP would think I was a total idiot if I ever had a car related conversation with him. But I might think he is an idiot if we had a conversation about structural related things. Except I wouldn't think that because that has nothing to do with IQ.
See?
-
Its in the title, people ARE stupid, and sometimes you just have to get away from the squeaking. :bhead

Right. The difference is, if CAP was explaining something vehicle related to you, showing a cause and effect within the realm of automotive stuff that culminated in 'And that's why the engine seized.' could you follow it and make simple extrapolations from that as to how other similar things might apply in similar situations? To me, that's intelligence.
Similarly, if you were explaining something structural related, that culminated in 'And that's why the building collapsed.' a reasonably intelligent person could follow that and see why it happened as it was being explained.
Many people one comes across in their typical day just don't seem to be able to logically follow a process where A flows to B and then to C unless they've had years of repetitive training in it.

And you know my personal life so well how?
Are you assuming that because I served in the USMC that I'm not intelligent? That the degrees I received from the institute I attended mean nothing? Or the fact I'm actually 25% through on becoming a physician (then to finish up and become an anesthesiologist) is just also something to toss in the trash?
The man was a half-wit.
Let me put it in another light: Same doctor; said his house was hot and he could not figure out why. We go in, it took us less than thirty seconds.....he had turned the numbers down on the thermostat but didn't turn it to "cool".
The original post wasn't that he couldn't put it together, it was the fact he couldn't put it together with barney style instructions. Before that night I had never put one together. Had no idea how to. Good thing that piece of paper had pictures and words to show me.
----
I'm not saying rich, successful people are stupid, but that most of the time it seems they lack common sense. Hell, Dr. Gerald Kadis (look him up on google) is my uncle. Lived down the street from me growing up, and he was always calling my dad and me to help fix small stuff that he couldn't understand. I mean he fixed stuff he knew how to, but if it didn't involve cutting someone's head open, he normally had forgotten how to do it.
I love the man though. Saved my cousin's life when he busted his skull open on a three wheeler and he flew medivac choppers in Vietnam.

I know 2 doctors who sacrifice far more than they make. Both have dedicated their lives to others. One is in his 80's, takes care of a few hundred nursing home patient no one else will touch, goes on 2 week vacation to central America, takes volunteer nurses, & donated supplies with him, to do benevolent work in poverty stricken areas...used to go every year...slowing down now. The other takes on as many nursing home residents as he can. The reason no one else will take them is because the Gov't won't reimburse him for his time writing orders, talking to nurses, being woke up at all hours...none of that pays a dime. :salute

I worked for a year in a surgery dept. first as a orderly then as a ESWL tech when my ex told me to get out of the Army or she was going to divorce me .
I watched as a urologist berated a nurse for preparing the wrong side for a nephrectomy . I lost my awe of doctors when I watched her reach up and flip an X-Ray over pointing out the little metal R was not there . Same doctor started talking to me like I was a dog a few months later . I told him I was looking for a crappy low paying job when I found this one . If he didn't alter his tone and his words I was going to whip his little azzzzzzz . Why is it the worst ones are always such azzz hats ?

Want a tip Marine ? If you wind up working in a big surgery dept. Find an orderly with a little common sense and upper body strength . Pay him a little to be the only person that moves your machine from room to room . Three or four different rooms a day was not uncommon where I worked . In the mid 80's they had a price tag of something like 40k . They are top heavy and have a very narrow base . I watched a less than thoughtful or industrious orderly put one on its back . I had four that had me do it for them . They each bought my lunch once a week and on Christmas they each gave me a C-note . After I got the tech job they tried to give me extra to keep on doing it . I told em no thanks on the raise . I was so grateful for the Christmas cash and side work they gave me . I did it for the lunch every day but friday . Point being the one I watched get toppled had to be replaced because it was just too delicate . That is your machine bought by you . Looks like refurbished go for 45k today .

His OR PA assistant told him he was an arse, he threatened to fire her, she laughed & said "You know Dr ----? well, he thinks you're an arse too so he just hired me. This is my last case with you. Good luck on the firing thing & find someone else stupid enough to work with you". I started laughing & he threatened to run me off too. I was working in Trauma OR when a Neuro surgeon started cussing & throwing instruments like a 5 y/o brat. I laughed again & said "Doc, this is my last case with you too"...still giggling... while ranting & throwing instruments he scream "Is every freakin' body quitting on me?" :rofl there is often justice, be patient & wait.... :salute
